Jayant and Sagar recently graduated from one of the best engineering school in India. They hail from a village in Amravati district of Maharashtra, which has been facing water scarcity for decades. Inspired by the movie “Swades” they decided to employ their ingenuity for solving the water problem of their village. They come up with the idea of constructing an elevated tank and piped water supply system. From reconnaissance they prioritized the following key parameters for their plan: 1. Water can be sourced from a “Sarovar”, which is a fresh water source at considerable distance from the village. Water should be delivered to the farthest distance possible without additional pumping (a) . The larger the served area, the better, but within limited resources (b) . 2. The tank should be located on an island within the “Sarovar” (c) . 3. The estimated water requirement is one lakh liters per day (d) . 4. Optimum use of materials (e) . 5. They have 3 months left to complete the construction before the onset of monsoon season (f) . Help Jayant and Sagar to create a model of elevated water tank. a. Hint: The height of the water tank should be as maximum as possible. b. Three persons per team, 150 straws, 200 pins. c. The model can have a maximum base dimension of 40 cm x 40cm. d. The structure should have a provision for a loading platform of 15 cm x 15 cm which will be loaded with 3 cycles of 1.5 kg load (depending on qualifying round) applied static for a duration of 15 seconds at a particular instance. e. Use the best possible structural system to reduce material consumption and to achieve required stability against the gravity loads with highest possible head

Jayant and Sagar recently graduated from one of the best engineering school in India. They hail from a village in Amravatidistrict of Maharashtra, which has been facing water scarcity for decades. Inspired by the movie Swades they decided to employ their ingenuity for solving the water problem of their village. They come up with the idea of constructing an elevated tank and piped water supply system. From reconnaissance they prioritized the following key parameters for their plan:

1. Water can be sourced from a Sarovar, which is a fresh water source at considerable distance from the village. Water should be delivered to the farthest distance possible without additional pumping (a). The larger the served area, the better, but within limited resources (b).2. The tank should be located on an island within the Sarovar (c).3. The estimated water requirement is one lakh liters per day (d).4. Optimum use of materials (e).5. They have 3 months left to complete the construction before the onset of monsoon season (f).

Help Jayant and Sagar to create a model of elevated water tank.a. Hint: The height of the water tank should be as maximum as possible.b. Three persons per team, 150 straws, 200 pins.c. The model can have a maximum base dimension of 40 cm x 40cm.d. The structure should have a provision for a loading platform of 15 cm x 15 cm which will be loaded with 3 cycles of 1.5 kg load (depending on qualifying round) applied static for a duration of 15 seconds at a particular instance.e. Use the best possible structural system to reduce material consumption and to achieve required stability against the gravity loads with highest possible headf. The model has to be prepared within 3 hours. A 30 minute preparation time is provided in addition to this for conceptualization of your model.
