State?HowcanIreachsomeoneinJapanandAustralia?"I'm,bynature,averycuriousperson,likeIwannaknowwhat'sinyourskincabinetandwhatspicesyouuseand,youknow,whattimeyouwakeupinthemorning.I'mjustacuriousperson.AndsoIwantedtogetall,youknow,thesewomenfromalloverandgetitinonespotandsortofcreatearesourcewherewomencouldgo.

AndsoIstarted...Iwasatschool,Iquitthesorority,andI'mbartending,teachingpurebarandPilatesduringtheday,goingtoschoolfull-time,andIthoughtablog.Andatthetime,youknow,thisis2010,ablogisnotawaypeoplearethinkingyou'regonnamakemoney.Theydidn'tgetit,itwasaveryweirdthing.Iwantedthe"SkinnyConfidential"tobeaplacethatwomencametogetthetips,togetthetricks,togetthejuice,togettheskinny.SoIwantedtoalsomakeitcheekyandwittyandfun,andself-deprecating.SoIputallthesewords,youknow,nexttoeachotherinmynotesupandthe"SkinnyConfidential."itwaslikegettingthejuice.Andittookmeayeartolaunch,whichlookingbackIwishIhadlaunchedfasterandadjustedto,youknow,consumerfeedback.

Butittookmeayear,IwasverymeticulousabouthowIwantedtorollitoutandwhatitwasgonnalooklikeandsortofhowtheaudiencewouldgothereandwhattheywouldleaveandjustwhatthevaluewouldbeintheblog.AndsoImappeditallout.Iworkedwithawebdesignerandpaidhim$50amonth.Nomoney,likenomoney,$50amonthtocreatethewebsite,andIlauncheditin2011.Andfromthereit'sblossomedintoabook,podcast,YouTubechannel.Michaelwasnotinvolvedtillabouttwoyearsago.

Michael:Yeah,Imean,Ithinkwetalkedalittlebit,though,butI'mmorelikebehindthescenes.Iwasrunningtraditionalbrickandmortarbusinesses,startedinrealestate,startedin2008.Guys,ifyoustartedinrealestate,don'tstartin2008.Luckily,we'repastthatnow.Wrongtimetogetinvolved.Butyouknow,IneverthoughtthatIwouldbedoingsomethingthatwasthisfrontfacing.Iwasalsobehindthescenesperson,buildingdirecttoconsumerbusinessonline,investingalittlebitaswetalkedaboutrunningtrafficforbrands.WhenIsaythatlikebasicallyhelpingthembuildandsellonline,itwasveryearlyonFacebookandGoogle.

AndtoalsogobackalittlebitIhadalwaysbeenpursuingLaurynsincelike12yearsold,whichiskindofafunnystory.WemetinelementaryschoolandIwasjustchasingherall,shekeptdenyingme.Andthenwhenwegraduatedcollege,shefinallydecidedtosayyes.Andsowe'vebeeninarelationshipeversinceandnowmarried.Butalongtheway,asyoucanimagine,andyoucanrelatetothis,herplatformstartedtogrowandshestartedtobroadenthetopicsoutsideofjustlikehealthandwellnessandmorelifestyle.Andobviously,ashersignificantotherpeople,startedaskingquestionslike,"Whothehellisthisguy?Whyishealwaysinthebackground?What'sgoingon?"

AndsoI'mnotthebestonsocial,butIliketotalk.AndsoIsaid,"Hey,whydon'twedoapodcasttogether?"It'ssomethingthatwecankindofowntogether.Shestillhasherblog,herplatform,whichsheverymuchcontrolsandruns.Istillhavemybusinesses,whichIstillverymuchcontrolandrun,butwefoundthismediumtogetherthatwehavefunat,whichispodcasting.Solet'sstartthat.Welaunchedthatacouple...almostthreeyearsagonow,inMarch,andsincethenit'sblossomedintoaprettyprominentshow.AndnowmycurrentroleisI'mtheCEOofacompanycalledDearMedia,whichisaprimarilyfemalefocusedpodcastnetworkthatwefounded.Ihave30differentshowsundermanagementandgrowing,andthat'skindofourstory.It'slike

ButIalsothinkwhat'ssocoolanduniqueandmaybenotunique,butit'ssomethingthatIlikeaboutourrelationshipandIthinkyouandSethhavethesamething,isthatwe'recommittedtothesamegoal,we'reonthesameteam,andIdon'tjustmeanwithinourmarriage,Imean,withinourbusiness,withinourvisionforourlife.Likeweknowthevisionthatwewantforourlifein5years,in10years,in20years,andwe'rebothreallyonthesamerollercoaster.SometimesIseeinrelationships,people,youknow,one'sontherollercoasterandtheothersonthemerrygoround,andthey'renotcommittedto,youknow,thesamesortofoutcome.Sothat'ssomethingthatIthinkisuniqueaboutourrelationship.Wealsoworktogethernotoneverything,butonthepodcasttogether,andthat'sbeenverychallengingbutalsoextremelyrewarding.

Michael:Yeah,Imean,togetalittlesappyforasecond.IwaslookedthatI'mworkingfromawinningpositionbecauseIfeelsohappywithLaurynandlike,we'realreadysoalignedandlikethelifewe'rebuilding.Andso,ifthebusinessgrowsorifthishappens,orsomethingbadhappens,IalwaysfeellikeI'matasolidplatform,tobeginwith,andeverythingelseisjustanaddedicingontopofthecake.

ButIthinksomanyofuswereconnectedonsocialmediawherewehavemoreconnectivitythanweeverhad.Butwe'reactuallylessincommunityandlessrelatingtootherpeople.AndIthinkjustfromwhatIknowofyou,like,Ithinkthat'swhypeoplegravitatetowardsyouonline,isthatyoufeelveryrealandtheyfeelliketheycanconnecttoyouandyoudon'thidetheimperfectpartsofyourself.Yousharethemandyoucomeacrosswiththisamazingvulnerability.SoI'dlovetohearyouspeaktocommunityandhowyoudrivethatintheonlineworld.

Lauryn:Ithinkasaninfluencercommunity,ifyou'rebakingacakeistheflour,it'ssoimportant.Forme,Icouldn'tdoanythingI'mdoingwithmyplatformwithoutmycommunity.That'snumberone.SowhenIwakeupinthemorning,youknow,wetalkedaboutpriorities,andIknowthatthisisoneofyourprioritiesaswell.Oneofmyprioritiesistoengagewithmycommunitysevendaysaweek.That's,youknow,takingahalfanhourinthemorningandrespondingto100DMs,that'sgoinginmysecretFacebookgroupandlikingandcommentingandengaging.That'sgoingintoSnapchatandcheckingmymessagesandengaging,returninge-mails.

I'mahugebelieverinconcentratingonthepeoplethatarealreadyfollowingyouthangoingoutandgettingmorefollowers.AndIthinkthatthatis,unfortunately,Ithinkthatthat'snothappeningalot.Ithinkpeopleareconstantlylookingformoreandmoreandmoreandthey'renotfocusingonwhat'sinfrontofthem.Ifyoufocusonwhat'sinfrontofyou,thepeopleinfrontofyouwillgooutandtheywillinfluencetheirfriends,whichbringsmorecommunity.

Andforme,mycommunityisalotoflike-mindedwomen,that's,youknow,non-judgmentalcommunity.LikeintheFacebookgroup,wetalkabouteverythingfromorgasmstotoday'slikevagina...Imean,it'ssomanydifferentthings.Andthespaceissonon-judgmentalbecauseI'vereallyworkedhardtocultivatethat.

AndIthinkthatifyou'reaninfluenceroutthereandyou'relistening,mynumberoneprioritywouldtobeengagedwiththepeoplethatyoualreadyhave.Andit'slike,whatyousaidearlieronourpodcastabouthow,whenyoufirststartedout,youknewyouraudience.Youknewthose200peoplesowell,thatyouknewabouthowmanykidstheyhad,oryouknowwhatcolorlipsticktheyliked,likethosethings,itmattersinthelongrun.

AndIthinkitcan'tjustbeabouthowmanycommentsyouget,orhowmanylikesyouget,ithastobeaboutthoseactualrelationships.AndthatmaymeandoingmeetupsandgettingoffsocialmediaanddoingthingsthatmaybearenotalwaysonInstagram,youknowwhatImean?Sometimesyouhavetogetoutthere,andIthinkwe'regonnaseethatalotin2019,2020,isinfluencersgettingoffthescreenandactuallyintoreallifeandgettingtoknowthepeoplethathavesupportedtheirplatform.

Michael:Yeah,wereadalot.OnebookIalwaysrecommendbecauseIjustthinkit'seasyforsomebodytojumpintoisabookcalled"ManagingOneself"byPeterDrucker.He'sobviouslyknownmoreformanagement.Butthere'sareallyshortandquickbook,it'slike50pagesandit'ssmall,youcouldreaditinanhour.Andit'sbasicallyaway,likeitteachesyoumoreabouthowyoucommunicate,howyouthink,howothersperceiveyou,basicallyhowyoumanageyourself.AndIthinkit'sareallygreatstartingplacetobuildself-awareness.

AndthenI'vereallybeenonaCharlieMunger,kicklatelyisWarrenBuffett'spartner.Ithinkhe'sreallywitty,Ithinkhe'sextremelysmart.Hewritesalotofgreatwork.Andhewroteabookcalled"PoorCharlie'sAlmanack,"whichisbasedoffBenFranklin's.Hedidanotherone.ButIthinkit'smorejusttalksthathe'sdoneandlifelessonsthathelearned.Ithinkthat'sareallygreatplaceandyoucouldjustjumpin,readafewpages.SothosearetwobooksIreallyrecommendandlike,onLauren'sblog,wehaveasectionwhereIrecommendbooks.I'mhereandthere,andsoyeah.
