Today’s Texts: Isaiah 60:1-6 Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14 Ephesians 3:1-12 Matthew 2:1-12

(The worship service begins with the prelude. Let us silently prepare our hearts and allow others the same opportunity.)

*We invite you to rise in body or in spirit Chimes

Prelude: “Impression on ‘We Three Kings’” Alfred V. Fedak

Words of Welcome and Announcements

Introit “There’s a Song in the Air” J.G. Holland K.P. Harrington *Call to Worship Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. Isa. 60:1 The brightness of God’s light shines upon all the nations. All are welcomed to the brightness of God’s dawn. Isa. 60:3 God gathers us from far away and carries us. With radiant eyes, with rejoicing hearts, we receive the abundance God gives. Isa. 60:4-5 We respond in praise. With our gifts, with our very selves, we worship God. Isa. 60:6b

*Prayer of the Day O Lord our God, your glory shines Isa. 60:1-2 as far as east is from the west, from the north to the south, so that all people may see and be radiant, so that every heart might thrill and rejoice. Isa. 60:5 Guide us on our baptismal journey in Christ. Overwhelm us with the joy of your presence. Matt. 2:10 May we enter your house and pay homage to him Matt. 2:11 whose infant arms were already reaching out to the ends of the earth that all might be gathered in. Isa. 60:4; Matt. 2:1 In your triune name, we pray. Amen.

*Hymn No. 151 “We Three Kings of Orient Are” KINGS OF ORIENT Page 2

*Invitation to Confession The Gospel of John tells us the basis for our judgment is this: “The light came into the world, and people loved darkness more than the light, for their actions are evil.” We confess our sins to God, to whom we have access through faith in Christ. We come in boldness and confidence, not according to our merit, but according to God’s grace. Eph. 3:12

*Prayer of Confession God of justice, we confess that our actions are evil Ps. 72:1-7, 10-14 whenever we remain passive while others are oppressed; whenever we guard our own prosperity at the expense of the poor; or when we ignore the cries of those in need of help. Forgive us, we pray, for hiding in the darkness of this world more than loving the light of your righteousness made known to us in Jesus Christ. Judge us with mercy, we pray, and extend your grace to us. Strengthen our faithfulness to you and to all who are precious in your sight. We pray in the name of Christ, our Light. Amen.

*Sung Kyrie

*Assurance of Forgiveness Friends, God is for us and not against us. For that very reason God sent the Son into the world - not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. John 3:17 We declare the good news of the Gospel: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven and set free to live a new life in him. Alleluia! Amen!

*Gloria Patri Glory to God, No. 581

*The Peace Since God has forgiven us in Christ, we also ought to forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you.

— Please greet those around you —

Prayer for Illumination O God of wonder, as that ancient star rose and guided the magi, Matt. 2:2 illuminating the place where Jesus was, so now may the light of your Holy Spirit shine in our hearts and minds as the Word is read and proclaimed. Guide us again to Christ, and direct us in new paths of faithfulness. In Christ we pray. Amen.

*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Call to Offering

The Offertory “What Child Is This?” Paul Manz *The Doxology Glory to God, No. 606

Prayer of Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Bright shining God, inner light of all faithful souls, we celebrate your gifts of love, creation, and art. We rejoice that you have made us in your image and call us to live in your limitless love. You bring peoples and leaders to the dawn of your rising. Luke 2:32 You sent your only child, our morning star, Rev. 22:16 to light a way in our night and lead us to justice and peace.

Page 5

Your Holy Spirit shines good news into our lives. Each daybreak you call us to feed the hungry, bring recovery of sight, liberate the oppressed, Luke 4:18 heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds, Ps. 147:3 and keep watch for the dawn of your commonwealth on earth. Matt. 24:42 For all of this we give you thanks.

And we praise you, joining our voices with all life on earth and the company of heaven, who forever sing their hymns to proclaim the glory of your name:

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, and after giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my body given for you. Whenever you do this, do it in remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant, sealed in my blood, shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do it in remembrance of me.

Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of our faith:

Page 6

By your Spirit bless this bread and this cup that they may become for us the presence of Christ among us. Shine your light and your love on the offering of our lives. Enlighten us that we may be your people, the body of the risen Christ, the light of the world, Matt. 5:14 set apart to serve this earth that you have made. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, we praise you now and forever, O Eternal Light. Hear us as we pray as you taught us to pray, saying: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Communion of the People All are invited to this feast. The bread and the juice will be brought to you by one of our elders. You are invited to partake of the elements as soon as you

receive them. Please let our servers know if you require gluten-free elements and it will be provided for you.

Prayer after Communion

*Hymn No. 107 “Awake! Awake, and Greet the New Morn”

*Responsive Charge & Benediction from the Iona Community The cross, we will take it. The bread, we will break it. The pain, we will bear it. The joy, we will share it. The Gospel, we will live it. The love, we will give it. The light, we will cherish it. The darkness, God shall perish it!

kiva.org is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that brings people together to give micro loans (usually $25 each) to people in order to help them help themselves. Here’s an example of how it works:

Maria in Equador needs another dairy cow to increase her production and make more money with her dairy farm. However,

things are tight so she doesn’t have the money on hand to invest in a cow. Therefore, she applies for a loan through kiva.org where

people like you can loan $25 (or more) to help give Maria the money to purchase the cow. Thanks to the loans from kiva.org, Maria can purchase the cow. Once the cow begins producing, Maria pays back

the loan to kiva.org where the money you loaned goes back into your account. You can then either withdraw the money or re-loan it

to another borrower.Want to join the SIPC KIVA team?

Go to sipchurch.org/missions/kiva and follow the directions at the bottom of the page.

To date, the SIPC KIVA Team has loaned $5,475 through 185 loans in 43 different countries!
