PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

The Feast of the Epiphany is the feast which commemorates the manifestation of God to the Gentiles. This manifestation began when the Wise Men from the East came to Bethlehem to pay their respects and offer their gifts to the newly-born King of the Jews. The magi are the central personages in today’s feast. They were pagans who did not know the true God of the Jews. Yet that true God revealed to them that the King he had promised to the Jews had come. The expected Prince was born. They came to Jerusalem, the capital of Judah, expecting, of course, to find the city and the whole country rejoicing. Instead they found suspicion and ha-tred in the reigning king, a hatred which in a few days turned to murder. The leaders knew the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, they realized that the Magi were very sure of the truth revealed to them; they would not have come such a long journey for nothing. These were the leaders who some years later refused to listen to Christ and in spite of his miracles refused to admit his claim that he was not only the promised Messiah, but the true Son of God. They rejected him because he had mercy on sinners. They were expecting a political Messiah who will bring earthly freedom and prosperity. Like Herod they ended with murder, the crucifixion of the “king of the Jews” We too know the true facts concerning Christ, his mission and his present and future kingdom. Like the leaders of the Jews of his days, we also could become absorber in the affairs of this life searching for wealth, pleas-ure and power. We could become so totally absorbed in such things as to have neither the interest nor the time to pay our respects to Christ or to welcome him into our homes and our hearts, as our true Lord. I finish with the Pope Francis part of last year homily for the epiphany: “On the feast of the Epiphany, as we recall Jesus’ manifestation to humanity in the face of a Child, may we sense the Magi at our side, as wise companions on the way. Their example helps us to lift our gaze towards the star and to follow the great desires of our heart. They teach us not to be content with a life of mediocrity, of “playing it safe”, but to let ourselves be attracted always by what is good, true and beautiful… by God, who is all of this, and so much more! And they teach us not to be deceived by appearances, by what the world considers great, wise and powerful. We must not stop at that. It is necessary to guard the faith. Today this is of vital importance: to keep the faith. We must press on further, beyond the darkness, beyond the voices that raise alarm, beyond worldliness, beyond so many forms of modernity that exist today. We must press on to-wards Bethlehem, where, in the simplicity of a dwelling on the outskirts, beside a mother and father full of love and of faith, there shines forth the Sun from on high, the King of the universe. By the example of the Magi, with our little lights, may we seek the Light and keep the faith. May it be so.” National Migration Week 2015 will take place January 4 – 10 with the theme, "“We are One Family Under God," which brings to mind the importance of family in our daily lives. This reminder is particularly important when dealing with the migration phenomenon, as family members are too often separated from one another. The first immigrant fami-ly was the family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, they had to obey the message of an angel and to go to unknown country to look for safety, since the life of Jesus was in danger. How many families from different cultures and country are coming to our country to look for safety and well being! Our Christian commitment commands us to welcome them and support in the best way we can. Special thanks: to those who sent Christmas greetings and gifts to the priests. May God bless your generosity. Happy Epiphany! Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE

Minister Schedule for January 10-11, 2015

Pro Life

The concerns for non-violence, sustainable development, justice and peace, and care for our envi-ronment are of vital importance for humanity. They cannot, however, be understood apart from a profound reflection upon the innate dignity of every hu-

man life from conception to natural death: a dignity con-ferred by God Himself and thus inviolable. ~Pope Benedict XVI, “Welcoming Celebration by the Young People, “ July 17, 2008.

Rosary Society Rosaries prayed the weekend of January 3-4, 2015, for all vulnerable people that we may love and care for them as the

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
