These are known as the Common Core Standards. The standards were designed to make sure that our K-12 education program prepares children to be ready for college and careers. The standards have been adopted by most of the states and feature increased rigor and more emphasis on helping students apply concepts, use more abstract thinking, and perform tasks that require synthesis and analysis across multiple contexts. In these first few years after the adoption of Common Core, educators have been working to deeply understand the new standards and develop the knowledge, skills and new ways of teaching that can support the new expectations. This year will be the first year that public schools are being held accountable for fully implementing the Common Core Standards in English and Math by participating in the new state assessment system using the Smarter Balanced Assessments. And this will be the first time that scores from these tests will be reported to parents. In elementary school, the Smarter Balanced Assessments will only be given in grades three, four, and five. These tests are very different from the old multiple-choice California Standards Test (CST). Along with some traditional multiple-choice responses, there are a variety of other question types including constructed written responses. In fact, questions requiring abstract thinking, synthesis and analysis are 50-60% of the new assessments. These tests are also administered on the computers – a relatively new format for many students. These tests will be administered in late April–early May (spread over several weeks so that students don’t test too long at any one sitting). Children will not test every day. A more detailed schedule for your child’s grade level will be sent home after Spring Break. Please do try to send your child on time and avoid absences so your child can take the tests with his or her class and not on a make-up day. Keep in mind that these new assessments cannot be compared with the old CST because they are so different. Based on projections from the Smarter Balanced field tests, it is very likely that scores on these new assessments will be lower than on the CST. So, don’t be alarmed – this will be the case at all schools and it’s not just your child or your school that may have lower scores. The state tests are also only one measure of student progress. Please let me know if you’d like to know more about testing and assessment at Edison. Como lo hemos estado platicando por varios años, California tiene un nuevo conjunto de normas del curso de estudios en inglés y matemáticas. Estas son conocidas como las Normas Comunes Principales. Las normas fueron diseñadas para asegurar que nuestro programa de educación de K – 12 prepare a los niños para estar listos para la universidad y carreras. Las normas han sido adoptadas por la mayoría de los estados y presenta rigor aumentado y más énfasis en ayudar a los estudiantes a aplicar conceptos, usar pensamientos más abstractos, y cumplir trabajos que requieren síntesis y análisis a través múltiples contextos. En estos primeros años después de la adopción de Normas Comunes, los educadores han estado trabajando para comprender profundamente las nuevas normas y desarrollar conocimiento, habilidades y maneras nuevas de enseñar que puedan apoyar a las nuevas expectativas. Este año siendo el primer año que las escuelas públicas tienen que dar contabilidad de implementar completamente las Normas Comunes Principales en inglés y matemáticas participando en el nuevo sistema de asesoramientos del estado usando los Asesoramientos de Balances Inteligentes. Y esta será la primera vez que los resultados de estos exámenes se reportarán a los padres. En la escuela primaria, los Asesoramientos de Balances Inteligentes solamente se les darán a los estudiantes en los grados tercero, cuarto y quinto. Estos exámenes son muy diferentes de los antiguo Exámenes Estandarizados de California (CST) de múltiples opciones. Aparte de las respuestas tradicionales de múltiples opciones, hay una variedad de otros tipos de preguntas incluyendo respuestas escritas construidas. De hecho, las preguntas requiriendo pensamiento abstracto, síntesis y análisis son de 50-60% de los nuevos exámenes. Estos exámenes son administrados en las computadoras – un formato relativamente nuevo para muchos estudiantes. Así es que, no se alarmen – esto será el caso en todas las escuelas y no es solamente su hijo/a o su escuela que pueda tener bajos resultados. Los exámenes del estado son solamente una medida del progreso estudiantil. Por favor avísenme si les gustaría saber más sobre los exámenes y asesoramientos en Edison.

SMMEF Anuncia Recaudaciones de Fondos de Primavera –SMMEF (la Fundación de Educación de Santa Mónica y Malibú) tiene dos recaudaciones de fondo de primavera planeadas para apoyar la Visión para el Éxito Estudiantil (VSS) para programas para el año que viene. Hay cartulinas mostrando los programas y el personal apoyado en Edison en el pasillo donde tenemos los cafecitos los miércoles. Changes to the Edison PTA Bylaws
1. New school address.
2. Added two new Vice President positions:
a. Vice President of Vision for Student Success
b. Vice President of Director Room Representatives
3. Changed “Chairman” to “Chairperson” throughout bylaws in
order to make references gender neutral.
4. Updated Standing Rules to accurately reflect current duties of
each of our Vice Presidents.
5. Combined corresponding secretary position with recording
secretary position. Edison only has one secretary position.
6. Change Membership and Communications to one standing
committee rather than the two reflected in the old bylaws.

Cambios a los Estatutos de la PTA de Edison
1. Nueva dirección de la escuela.
2. Se agregaron dos nuevos Puestos para Vice Presidentes:
a. Vice-Presidenta/e de Visión para el Éxito Estudiantil
b. Vice-Presidenta/e de Director/a de Representantes de Salón
3. Se cambió “Chairman” a “Chairperson” en todos los estatutos para
hacer que apliquen la referencias a cualquier género.
4. Se actualizaron las Reglas Permanentes para reflejar correctamente
los deberes actuales de cada uno/a de nuestros/as Vice-
Presidentes/as.
5. Se combinó la posición de secretario/a correspondiente con la
posición de secretario/a de actas. Edison sólamente tiene una
posición de secretario/a.
6. Se combinó a Membrecía y Comunicaciones en un comité
permanente en vez de los dos como estaban reflejados en los
estatutos anteriores.
7. La posición de cuarto Vice-Presidente/a, Director/a de Educación
Especial se cambió a Director/a de Eventos Especiales.
8. El Concilio Estatal PTA agregó nuevos artículos a la sección de las

March 19, 2015 Dear Parents and Guardians, Since the 2011-12 school year, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) has been aligning its curriculum to the new Common Core State standards. The new, more rigorous math standards have required the realignment of the middle school math courses previously offered. Our current sequence of middle school math courses is based on recommendations from the CA Math Frameworks document, Appendix A of the CCSS for Mathematics, and the knowledge of our own teachers. The purpose of this letter is to share some important information regarding math placement for the 2015-16 school year. Years of data show that a small group of students have successfully navigated an accelerated pathway. Our District will continue supporting those students who seek such acceleration. Our Four-Year College Math Pathway includes Core 6, Core 7 and Core 8, the middle-school courses that prepare students for successfully completing the three high-school courses required by the University of California as well as a recommended fourth year of higher-level math. This pathway has acceleration points after 5th grade, 6th grade, 8th grade and 9th grade. Placement in the acceleration classes is based on multiple measures, including a district-wide math readiness test; prior CST scores in ELA and Math; elementary report cards. WHAT’S THE SAME? • Schools use multiple measures for placing students into math courses, including state or national
assessment data and teacher input (report card data.) • Parents can provide input on his/her child’s math placement by consulting with his/her
counselor. WHAT’S DIFFERENT? • Most students will begin middle school in Math Core 6. • Some students are prepared to skip Math Core 6 and begin middle school in Math Core 7/8.
Students who successfully complete Math Core 7/8 enroll in algebra as seventh graders. • Placement criteria for Math Core 7/8 include student assessment results in ELA. This is
because the CCSS in math require that students engage in close reading of complex, real-world math problems and that they propose solutions and rationale for those solutions both orally and in writing.
WHAT ARE NEXT STEPS?
• Counselors will place students into the appropriate math course based on the criteria. • Parents will receive a notification of their child’s math placement. • Spring CAASPP assessment results may be used for adjustment of initial placement.

Los nuevos, mas rigurosos Estándares de matemáticas, han requerido la realineación de los cursos de matemáticas para las escuelas secundarias previamente ofrecidos. Nuestra secuencia actual de cursos de matemáticas para las escuelas secundarias se basa en las recomendaciones del documento de Estructura de Matemáticas de CA, Apéndice A de la CCSS para Matemáticas, y el conocimiento de nuestros propios maestros. El propósito de esta carta es para compartir información importante con respecto a la colocación de matemáticas para el año escolar 2015-16. ENROLLMENT INFORMATION: Grade level is determined by the grade the student will enter in August 2015. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning March 23, 2015. Classes are offered subject to enrollment and are limited to 20-25 students. Confirmation of classes will be sent to the student’s home address. Enrollment continues as long as space is available. NOTE: Unless enrolled, children may not visit classes as a guest. FEES: Tuition for the full program is $525 per child (or $500 if you register by April 17). Some classes have a materials fee in addition to the tuition that is non-refundable and non-transferable after May 30. ALL FEES MUST BE PAID BY JUNE 9. Make check payable to: Santa Monica-Malibu Council of PTAs. No student will be allowed to attend class without full payment. PRIMARY OCEANOGRAPHY #30 Grades 1-2 This very popular class is back for another year! Taught by a team of three experienced primary teachers, this course is an in-depth study of sea life. Students will attend research trips to the library and the Santa Monica Pier and even have visits from real marine scientists, all in order to gather knowledge and have hands-on experiences with sea life. Students will be encouraged to apply their knowledge of sea life in a variety of activities: sea life stories, sea life riddles, pop-up books, and under-the-sea murals, just to name a few! Have fun and get creative drawing, designing, painting, and making collages! BRICKS 4 KIDZ #305 Grades 4-5 Bricks 4 Kidz classes provide an extraordinary atmosphere for children, where we learn, build and play… with LEGO bricks. You will be introduced to principles of engineering by constructing a new model every day based on exciting themes from space to sports, amusement parks to animals and transportation to inventions. Bricks 4 Kidz teachers lead a discussion related to that day’s model, using materials designed by educators to teach STEM concepts across a variety of subject areas. Activities include mind-stretching science
and innovative art activities, organized
outdoor challenges as well as interactive
local trips. Participants will explore local
nature habitats and uncover how fun
learning can be in the outdoors!
Water Adventures
Splash into spring break by spending the
week at CSM’s Water Adventures. Learn to
surf, boogie board and swim! Highly energet-
ic staff will teach participants about water
safety. Dip into organized water play at local
beaches and pools. All skill levels are wel-
come! Sunscreen is required.

A unique camp for boys and girls who enjoy
sports, action-packed tournaments and orga-
nized games. Our goal is to stimulate sports-
manship in youth of all athletic abilities. Whether
it’s learning a new sports skill or participating in
a specialized sports class, your child will look
forward to a new sports challenge every day!
