12.3 Lines and planes in three dimensions

The angle between two lines is the angle between their direction vectors. This can be
found from the scalar product, defined in 12.2.

Common errors
1. Points and Vectors
(a) The vector from the origin to 3,4 is 3,4 . But this vector also goes
from say 1,7 to 4,11 . Vectors have magnitude and direction, but not
position.
(b) The vector from 2,5 to 1,10 is 1,5 and 1, 5 .
(c) In general , if A and B have position vectors a and b , then AB is b a .
It is not b , or a b , or a b .
2. Modulus
(a) The modulus of 3,4 is 2 23 4 5 , not 3 1 7 .
(b) Be careful of negative signs. Any number squared is positive ,so the
modulus of 3, 4 is the same as the modulus of 3,4 .
3. Scalar Product
(a) .a b is scalar, not a vector:
2,3 . 3,4 . It should be 6 12 18 .
(b) Do not be confused if there are many possible answers to a problem. There
are infinitely many vectors perpendicular to 1, 2,3 ,for example. Just give
the simplest one you can find.
4. Lines and Planes
(a) Do not confuse the position vector of a point on a line and the direction
vector of that line.
(b) In there dimension, two Cartesian equations are needed to define a line. If
you have only one equation then that will describe a plane.
(c) Do not confuse vectors perpendicular to a plane with vector parallel to the
plane.
