CEDARVILLE’S LAST GAMES ...

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - A big first-half run propelled NAIA #2 Walsh to an 80-60 victory over

Cedarville in the American Mideast Conference Tournament championship game.

The contest featured two teams who had already garnered automatic bids to next week’s NAIA

Division II National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. While both were vying for the AMC tourney

trophy, Walsh was playing for a potential #1 seed in the 32-team event while the Yellow Jackets

were trying to improve their standing with the raters.

The Cavaliers, 29-1 overall, displayed shades of rust of having not played in nine days when

Cedarville scored the first six points and jumped out to an 8-2 lead. The Jackets led 15-14 with

12:30 left when Walsh turned things around big time.

The Cavs exploded on a 32-6 spurt which included one string of 14 unanswered points. The hosts

opened up a 46-21 bulge, but the Jackets scored the last eight points of the half to close the gap

to 46-29.

CU scored the first basket of the second half to get within 15. Walsh netted the next six points

and they were well on their way to their 48th straight home victory.

Brian Grant made 8-of-9 shots for 16 points for the Yellow Jackets, 20-12, who had their seven-

game winning streak snapped. Derrick Hannon chipped in 10 points.

Cedarville has been one of the top three-point shooting teams in the AMC. However, the Jackets

missed their first 17 bombs of the night and finished 1-for-19.

It was CU’s fifth appearance in the conference tournament title game and their third in the last

four years. The Jackets are 3-2 in such contests with the last four coming on the road.

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Matt Harner fired in 25 points as the #2 seed Yellow Jackets nipped #3

Roberts Wesleyan, 71–69, in the Callan Athletic Center in the AMC Tournament semifinal to

secure another trip to the NAIA Division II Championship.

Before making its fifth consecutive excursion to Point Lookout, Mo. for the 32-team event on

March 9-15, Cedarville heads to top seed and #2 ranked Walsh on Tuesday for the AMC title

game. Tip off is slated for 8 p.m.

Harner came up big in the second half against Roberts Wesleyan when he scored 21 of his

points. He tallied 17 of the Yellow Jackets’ last 23 markers covering the final 11 minutes of the

contest.

Cedarville scored the last 10 points of the first period for a 34-29 lead. The hosts completed a 14-

point run early in the second half for a 38-29 margin - the largest advantage either team had.

The Raiders, who brought a 10-game winning streak into town, bounced back to regain the upper

hand with a pair of three-point spreads. Their last lead was 63-62 with 4:22 to go.

Brian Grant broke the game’s 12th and final tie with 3:11 to play to give CU the lead for good, 67-

65. Harner added a jumper for a four-point advantage and Daniel Kohavi converted both ends of

a one-and-one with 18 seconds on the clock to make it 71-67.

Roberts Wesleyan cut it to two with five ticks left and the visitors had one last chance with 1.3

seconds remaining after the Jackets missed the front end of the bonus. However, a length-of-the-

court pass was deflected away as time expired.

Grant, who is averaging 16.3 points and 9.2 rebounds in his last six outings, matched his career-

high with 21 points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds. Derrick Hannon dished out eight

assists without committing a turnover.

Cedarville improved to 20-11 overall with its seventh consecutive victory and 10th in the last 11

games. The only loss in that string was to Roberts, 77-68, three weeks ago at home. The Raiders

fall to 19-12.
