INTRODUCTION.

E I~ HT years ago, when the Irish College was established III Omeath, tb.ere were still a large number of native

speakers who were steeped in poetry and song. Many of them could sing or recite from memory over a thousand lines of Irish verse, and, of those over sixty-five years of age, there was scarcely one from whom a t least a hundred lines could not be obtained. They could all claim relationship with some of the great Omeath poets of the 18th century-An Dail lVIhacCurta, Niall og A'lVIhurcbaidb, An Bodhran A'Neill, Manus lVIhacArdghaill, or Raomann na Rannta, and, in their youth, they had known Peadar 0 Lorcain, Peig Ni Chuarta, and other minor poets of fifty years ago. At the time, I understood but littl e of their dialect, but I soon discovered that their own keen appreciation of their songs and stories had produced among them a species of literary culture. Filled with a desire of preserving some of this folk-literature from being lost, I began to collect the songs. I realised that I was but poorly equipped for the task, but most of the seanachies were of a ripe old age, and I could not induce anyone else to take an interest in the work. During the first two years I took down hundreds of lines phonetically without knowing anything of their meaning. Frequently, when I went back, a year later, to have the poems corrected or explained, I found that the singers had gone to their last resting-place in the little graveyard of Cillidh-Chuim, I am glad to say that with practice, I acquired a facility in transcribing the poems, but my ignorance of the dialec(in the earlier-years must be my excuse for many imperfections in the work.

The result of over seven years ' labour is a manuscript collection of about two h undred and fifty songs, taken down

INTRODUCTION

from about forty people, most of them now dead, in a district of seven town lands, A remarkable feature of the collection is the large number of religious poems, which I hope to publish in a separate volume. In the present volume, I have purposely excluded all the Dlore popular poems of the district, as the collating of scores of versions would take more time that I can at present devote to t he task. Among the well -known songs thus omitted are Iomail L eanaidh an Bhabhdhuin, Uir-chill an Chreagain, Ceithre Raithche na Bliadhna, Iomail Ath ' na gCasan, An Giobac, Nei llidh NicDhomhnaill, Bean an Fhir Ruaidh, Eibhlin a ruin , Buaidhreadh a' Phosta etc. Exigencies of space compelled the exclusion of all the longer pieces. I have therefore contented myself with the publication of a number of the shorter and least-known pieces, preferably, of those of which I had obtainea but one version.

I take the liberty of dedicating these songs to the students of St. Brigid's College, Omeath. For their use, chiefly, the book is intended, in the hope that it may help to bring them into doser touch with the native speakers who still remain· The most direct way to the hearts of the old seanachies is to recite to them a few verses, which they themselves, as children, had learn ed from the crooning of their mothers and grandmoth ers . I owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Se umas 0 Ceallaigh, who kindly placed at my disposal a manuscript which he compiler:l in Omeath, twenty years ago.
