On May 16, the Alma Action Committeeheld a community meeting to ur gethe city of San Jose to keep the Alma

Center open. The center has been fighting to stayopen after two consecutive years of uncertainty.

For over 40 years the Alma Center has thrivedon volunteers who make the center a secondhome for most of its senior population and itsyouth. The center is said to bring joy and a senseof community to the Washington Neighborhood.

“I hav e a good time at the center ,” saidTeodoro Solis. “I also deserve a safe place fo r ameal, but I r eally deserve a community center Ican be proud of.”

The San Jose P arks, Recreation and Neigh-borhood Services Department is proposing there-use or closure of the center to offset the city’sbudget deficit.

The center asked the City council and MayorReed to support the Silicon Valley Council of Non-profits’ proposal to allocate an additional$400,000 for two y ear services particularly for

seniors. During a research process done by the Alma

Action Committee, the members attended and re-viewed a senior nutrition program and task forcemeetings; spoke with representatives of the Of-fice of Aging, County of Santa Clar a, and spokewith City councilmembers and the Vice Mayor ofSan Jose.

“As y ou c ontinue t o f ight, w e’ll f ight w ithyou,” said councilmember Sam Liccardo.

Each and every day the v olunteers work topreserve and strengthen the center that keeps

over 100 youths off the str eets. The center alsoprovides a hot meal daily to an av erage of 200seniors who are local homeowners, retired work-ers, local allies, and community leaders.

For many, the lunch provided by the center isthe seniors only meal of the day. Some divide thelunch into two portions to avoid hunger in theevening hours.

For others, especially those living alone, thecenter provides much needed socialization activ-ities like bingo, loteria, and field trips.

“When my husband died I thought that wasit for me, but when I started going to center I re-alized I had to enjo y life,” said Angela Mor eno.“The people are beautiful and I don’t feel alone.”

For most, the center fills a void that deceasedspouses may leave. While to others, it provides aday of purpose or a safe place to do homework.

Based u pon t heir s tudy, t he c enter i s i nsearch of stability with two main proposals. Atthis time they are requesting that the center hireone full time staff member and request a coordi-nated evaluation.

As a result of the meeting, Vice Mayor Madi-son Nguyen made it clear that the center will re-main open in the next fis cal y ear. She willcontinue to work on a budget that keeps the cen-ter open which signifies a major leap towards thecenter’s stability. ∆

OPINION

By Hilbert [email protected]

OCURRIELCIAS

Political FundraisingCampaigns

By Hector [email protected]

On Monday, May 16, 2011, I r e-ceived a c all f rom a l ady w hoidentified herself and then took

steps to verify that I was ‘Hilbert Morales”,a r egistered v oter. What follo wed was avery carefully worded request to pledge ‘asubstantial contribution’ to ensure the re-election of President Obama. The commen-tary I am about to provide you also appliesto those of y ou who receive phone solici-tations for donations to the election of anycandidate.

I chose to engage the soliciting party ina conversation that brought up the follow-ing issues. I suggest that you do the samebecause L atino c ontributors m ust s tatewhat needs to be done for Latino commu-nities, and request that your personal pri-orities be relayed up to their supervisors.In effect, what is being suggested is to notcommit to any contribution without firstexpressing those concerns which ar e ofhigh priority to you and your community.

For e xample, The D REAM l egislationneeds to pass this y ear to enable Latinoundocumented students, brought here bymigrating parents as ‘b abes in arms’, tocontinue their education and pr eparationto become qualified professional citizens.

My expressed concerns w ere the fol-lowing: First, I was disappointed that nouse w as m ade o f t he ‘ Unsecured M ini-Grant Loans” concept at all. What was ap-proved ab out one y ear ago was ‘ smallbusiness lo ans’ thr ough banks whoseloans were guaranteed by the Small Busi-ness Administration, Department of Com-merce. Such SBA loans r equired that thefirm show a profit during the past two orthree fiscal years. As a consequence of thevery high unemployment rate in Hispaniccommunities, many Hispanic o wned andoperated small businesses could notdemonstrate pr ofitability. They coulddemonstrate the fact that their survival asa business occurred. The outcome was notreceiving any SBA insured loan because ofthe inability to demonstr ate profitabillity.What is not being consider ed in curr entpublic policy is the fact that it is in smallentrepreneurial businesses that innovationoccurs and new jobs are created.

A second concern was, that while WallStreet financial groups and the auto indus-try r eceived ‘bail-out funds’, nothing ofthat sort was provided to the small busi-

ness community. This is very important tostate because those large ‘bail-out funds’never trickled down to our community atall. That money would have trickled up hadsmall businesses received ‘unsecured minigrants’ because additional emplo yeeswould be spending their salaries makingthe us ual a nd c ustomary p ayments fo rmortgages, food, clothing, educations, etc.Today, the banking industry is still not will-ing to provide credit to small businesses.

A third concern is the need for the Of-fice of Consumer Affairs at the WhiteHouse to assertively modify mortgages. Ascontracts to ‘buy a home’, mortgages cur-rently protect the banks, brokers, and realestate agents while pr oviding no contin-gency provisions which enable the ‘homebuyer’ to make r equired transitional ad-justments. F or example, if the family’ smonthly income falls thr ough no fault ofthe employed family members, the homebuyer needs to be able to continue to serv-ice the mor tgage by payments of inter estonly (without reduction of principal owed)to enable the family to stay in their homes.And if a large amount of ‘home equity’ hasbeen built up, to use that to enable staying‘in their home’. Currently, home purchasershave no right to ‘mortgage modification orrenegotiation’. It is unr easonable to proj-ect a reliable income over a 15 or 30 y earmortgage agr eement these days. If thewage earner loses emplo yment becausethe job was outsourced overseas, at leasttwo years needs to be provided for re-train-ing and re-employment. These adjustmentcontingencies simply do not exist in cur-rent mor tgages with the outcome thatsome home-owners lost their ‘life-savings’through no fault of their own.

My point i s that Latinos need notpledge any contribution without first say-ing what their personal concerns and pri -orities are today. These are having a highquality education and training for our chil-dren; jobs and a better economy; andsome evidence that a career ladder is avail-able to us all. Government and financial in-stitutions have no problem telling us whattheir terms ar e. Latinos need to pr acticetelling the establishment what their per -sonal and community priorities and con-cerns are. So do communicate assertively.Pledge your political campaign contribu-tions as you may, but state as part of thatpledge your priorities and conditions.∆

By Cinthia Rodriguez – El Observador

Each year hundreds of speeches ar emade by keynote speakers at differ-ent gr aduation cer emonies. This

years’ commencement key note speaker forthe graduating class of Cogswell College 2011was Douglas Rand, former biologist and cur-rent policy advisor for the White House’s Of-fice of Science and Technology.

Several school o fficials and communityleaders were able to attend a preview lunch-eon w here D ouglas R and s poke o n a w iderange of issues affecting entrepreneurship in-cluding the roles of big business and smallbusiness.

Rand, an accomplished entrepreneur, hasbeen working for the White House for eightmonths. P rior t o h is White H ouse a ppoint-ment, Rand was Co-Founder and CEO of theinnovative publishing company Playscripts,Inc. as well as a Co-Founder of the live theaterreview aggregator StageGrade.

Rand had visited the Silicon Valley sixmonths ago. During his return, he acknowl-edged th e i mportance o f s chools l ikeCogswell College for encouraging students tostart small businesses.

Rand talked about the R ecovery Act andits three immediate goals. These goals in-clude the creation of new jobs, saving existing

ones, spur economic activity , inv esting inlong-term gr owth and fostering unpr ece-dented l evels o f a ccountability a nd t rans-parency in government spending.

“There has to be an incentive to give outmoney,” said Rand. “We want anyone who isreceiving money from an angel investment topass a market test. This is v aluable to thepeople in the Silicon Valley.”

According to R and, his office is lookinginto schools like Cogswell that make it possi-ble and available for their students to havereal life experience with entrepreneurship.

There was also talk about S tartup Amer-ica initiative, a coalition of mentors, advisors,funders, major corpor ations and ser viceproviders who deliver strategic and substan-tive resources to help entrepreneurs start andscale-up companies.

Most A mericansneed to kno wmore a bout t he

risk factors for gout, accord-ing to the findings of a newconsumer s urvey. G out,sometimes ca lled g outyarthritis, i s c hronic a nd

painful. If left untreated, it canbecome disabling. It no w af-fects an estimated 8.3 millionAmericans.

While 59 percent of Amer-icans know that gout is a life-long d isease, m ost a dultsdon’t kno w what can putthem - or their family mem-

bers - at risk, accor ding to anational survey conducted bythe Gout & Uric Acid Educa-tion Society (GUAES). Gout ispart of the arthritis family andin fact is the most commonform of inflammatory ar thri-tis.

The telltale sign of a goutattack is usually sudden andoften debilitating pain, mostfrequently felt in the lar gejoint of the big toe. A flare upcan hurt so much that i t mayrequire a trip to the emer -gency room for relief. The cul-prit is a build-up of uric acidcrystals in the joints causedby too much uric acid in thebody. Everyone has uric acidin their body . It’ s natur allypresent in small amounts, butwhen someone has an abnor-mally high level, it can triggera gout attack.

Americans don ’t hav e agood picture of other healthconditions that can incr easetheir r isk, a ccording t o t hesurvey. Here’s how Americansfared when their k nowledgeof risk f actors for gout was

put to the test:

* Only 1 in 10 Americanscorrectly cited cardiovasculardisease as a risk factor forgout.

* J ust 1 i n 3 A mericanscorrectly r eported that obe-sity is a risk factor.

* One in 5 Americansknows that diabetes and kid-ney disease are also risk fac-tors.

* A mere 1 in 5 Americansmade the connection thatfamily history can put you atrisk.

“It’s important to know ifyou may be at risk,” says Dr .Brian Mandell, chairman ofmedicine a nd a s enior s taffmember i n Rh eumatologyand Immunologic Diseases inthe Center for Vasculitis Careand Research at the ClevelandClinic, and G UAES boar dmember. “The survey findingsconcern me because gout isassociated with all of theseother se rious h ealth c ondi-tions that are also on the rise.

Knowledge is power, and likemany other diseases, early di-agnosis and tr eatment iskey.”

Other risk factors for gout With certain exceptions,

gout develops in people age45 or older . It affects menmore than women. Once awoman is post menopausal,though, her risk is nearly thesame as it is for m en of herage.

Here are some of theother risk factors to be awareof:

* Untr eated high bloodpressure

* High cholesterol * O besity - s omeone

obese i s fo ur t imes m orelikely to develop gout

* Cr ash diets which canincrease t he a mount o f u ricacid in the body

* A high-fructose diet, in-cluding sweetened soft drinks

* Excessive consumptionof alcohol, especially beer

* Joint injury * K idney d isease, w hich

can c ome f rom h igh b lood

pressure or diabetes * Use of cer tain medi-

cines, especially diuretics orwater pills

* Some anti-r ejectionmedications u sed i n t rans-plant patients

While there’s no cur e forgout, a combination of med-ication and lifestyle modifica-tions may help thosediagnosed manage the dis-ease, helping them to main-tain their active lifestyle.

For more informationabout risk factors for gout,talk to your doctor and visitwww.GoutEducation.org. Thewebsite was developed byGUAES, a nonprofit group ofhealth care professionals whoeducate the public and thehealth care community aboutgout and the related healthcare consequences of hyper-uricemia. It offers free educa-tional resources for patientsand family members who maybe at risk.
