program.
First Year Seminar Teams Up with Habitat Ocean County College’s EOF First Year
Seminar, a three-day event for new students, is
designed to orient new EOF students to program
requirements, teach academic skills, meet other
new students, and encourage a sense of
community at OCC and with the surrounding
area. This year, the program concluded with a
community service event with Habitat for
Humanity of Toms River. EOF students were split
among two locations.
Group #1 worked hard as a team to clean and
landscape a yard for a group home for
adults with disabilities. EOF students got
down and dirty picking weeds, cleaning
gutters, mulching, cutting grass and even
resealing a driveway. Group #2 built a new
shed for a family who desperately needed
it. Students collaborated with Habitat staff
to design, measure, cut, and assemble the
shed. Each group was satisfied with giving
back to the community and looks forward to
more opportunities to volunteer.

Eye on EOF: Ashley McCafferty Ashley McCafferty is a current EOF student at
Ocean County College and is working on
completing her prerequisite courses for
admission into the nursing program. Ever since
she was young, Ashley knew she wanted to work
in the nursing field. She has committed herself to
the EOF program by regularly meeting with her
advisor, choosing workshops that hold her
interest, and attending all EOF Open Houses
and mandatory events.
Even though Ashley has chosen nursing as her
career of choice, she is an extremely talented
artist, and one of her ocean view paintings is
displayed in our office. She currently works as
an assistant art teacher at Imagine Art School
and also designs and creates original pieces.
Her medium of choice is acrylic and airbrush.
She hopes to pursue her bachelor’s degree in
sunny San Diego after graduation from OCC. ***2012-2013 First Year Seminar Dates: August 20, 21, 22***

Skateboarding Stole My Heart Kyle McDowell, a former EOF student at
Ocean County College, is a unique and
outgoing individual, quick to smile and converse
with anyone within range. Fearless and driven,
Kyle has learned many valuable lessons
because of his love of skateboarding.
As a child, his parents bought him a skateboard
for Christmas and he immediately found his
passion on four wheels. He quickly outgrew that
starter board, was skating daily and improving
dramatically with each trick. Kyle found himself
even skateboarding in the winter, after
shoveling out a patch of driveway.
His dedication to the sport led him to join the
team Anchor Skateboard, led by pro skater
Danny Morrin and other local skateboarding
all-stars. Anchor Skateboard has traveled to
Carlsbad, CA, Philadelphia, PA, Tampa,
Florida, and even to the Bahamas.
All the while, Kyle remained dedicated to
completing his degree. In the spring of 2011,
Kyle received his Associate of Arts degree in
Liberal Arts from Ocean County College.

On May 15, 2012, over 80 faculty, staff, students
and their families enjoyed an Evening with the Stars
at the Annual Awards Banquet sponsored by the
Educational Opportunity Fund and the Office of
Multicultural Services. This event honored the
academic and personal achievements accomplished

celebrity stand-up decorations, and a Hollywood
Walk of Fame surrounding the space, leaving
guests star-struck. Students, awardees and families
dressed their best while dining on shrimp scampi,
chicken cordon bleu, cake and pastries from OCC’s
