This semester was an opportunity for the new elected executive committee to
debut. We defined three main goals for us.
Firstly, to preserve traditional programs of the AAPG Eötvös SC, which were
invented by the predecessor committees. This heritage includes several excellent
programs, which have many years' history. These programs enable to build up
communication between students and members of the oil-industry, which could be
beneficial for all participants. This was the fourth time the Budapest Education Days
were held. As a result of several years cooperation with the Hungarian Geological
Society we organized the 5th Student Workshop.
The second goal is strengthening and deepening the cooperation with the
geophysics SEG Eötvös Student Chapter. To understand the background of
geological processes and used geophysical methods is a necessary competency in
oil industry. In this year our old dream to integrate geology and geophysics in a
practical field camp came true. We organized the first international AAPG-SEG Field
Camp. Encouraged by the positive feedbacks from the participants we plan to
organize it again in the future.

The third goal is developing the communication with students both from our
University and from different Chapters. In this semester we had opportunity to
participate on field trips in Austria thanks to the Bucharest Student Chapter, and
Aberdeen, thanks to University of Aberdeen Student Chapter. We were invited to a
communicational training by the Miskolc Student Chapter. We held an Introductory
and team building event to show our programs to interested students and members
of oil-industry. As a result of this meeting a future cooperation for several programs
between other Hungarian Student Chapters was decided. In this year a cooperation
has started with the Slovakian Comenius University .
I would like to thank the student members for their activities, without their
enthusiasms the programs could not be held. We would all like to thank our
sponsors (MOL Plc., Geoinform Ltd.) and AAPG for their supports.
The AAPG Eötvös Student Chapter had an eventful semester with several
successful programs. Please find our descriptions of these.

Outstanding International Student Chapter Award 2015
We closed a very fruitful year in 2014 and we could continue our activity in
2015 with some conventional events like Pannonian Basin Student Workshop and
find new directions to develop our knowledge and international connections
(AAPG-SEG Field Camp).
After 2013, we received the Outstanding International Student Chapter Award for
the second time at ACE 2015. We greatly appreciate it, the positive feedback for the
Eötvös SC is valuable. This award stimulates the members of the SC to keep up the
enthusiasms and organize more and more and wider ranges of petroleum geology
related programs.
We would like to thank this honor and the money prize to the AAPG that we are
going to in the organization of the Pyrenees Field Trip.
Finally I would like to thank the hard work of the Eötvös SC's members and I wish a
successful year in 2016 similar to the previous ones.

Student Chapter Activities from July to December 2015
4th Budapest Education Days
26th – 28th August
The AAPG – Budapest Education Days was already held the fourth time at
Eötvös Loránd University supported by the MOL Group Inc. Follow the traditions our
Student Chapter invited foreign lecturers and professionals from the oil industry as
well and students from foreign universities could also participate in the program.
The series of programs were held in late summer, between the 26th and the 28th
August. This three-days long educational program was based on lectures and
practice related to the industry and a sedimentology field trip to Süttő in the
Gerecse Mountains.
The event was opened by Dr. István Bérczi (MOL Group) and Balázs Soós, the
president of the ESC (Eötvös Student Chapter). After the great opening speeches the
BED was begun with the lecture of Andrew Zolnai (AAPG Visiting Geoscientist)
about how to populate PPDM Tables from well files and post them on a map. After
the presentation of a simple workflow, he talked about the geological use of GIS
softwares and gave us a brief introduction about his motivating professional career
path and the places around the world where he travelled as part of his jobs.
A few hours later the heads of the AAPG Eötvös Student Chapter and the
professors arrived to FAK (Fekete Arany Klub - Golden Oil Club) where we discussed
over the future of the AAPG community, the oil industry and finally spent a good
On the second day of the Budapest Education Days we headed to Süttő where
Prof. Dr. Andrea Mindszenty and Ágnes Török PhD student introduced us to the
famous travertine quarry of Süttő. Not only university students, but professionals
and Prof. Dr. Reinhard Sachsenhofer as well as Dr. Noel Joy-Purcell came to this
outstanding field trip. The high attendance can be thanked to the very interesting
subject, since the study of travertine reservoirs is a relatively new part of petroleum
geology.
The lecturers talked about the facies of the travertine which were formed in
the Pleistocene. They focuse how we can recognize and separate them. During our
trip we also saw how these rocks are extracted and the technology which is used
here. After our lunch we went to another quarry pit where we received a task by the
lecturers. According to their previous speeches we had to examine and separate the
different facies of the travertine in teams. For all of us it was an interesting task, since
most of the groups were able to recognize and describe the forms geologically and
their possible depositional environment. Finally, at the end of the day we found a
gorgeous structure on the wall of the quarry which we discussed about with the
professors. They set up several hypotheses for the depositional environment but no
one could surely decide which could be the best one.

4th Budapest Education Days
26th – 28th August
The third as well as the final day was strongly industry related held by Prof. Dr.
Reinhard F. Sachsenhofer (University of Leoben) and Dr. Noelle Joy Purcell (Shell).
The first lecture was about petroleum system analysis in the Alpine Foreland Basin
by Prof. Dr. Sachsenhofer. It was a popular presentation because the connections
between geology of Hungary and the Alpine-system. Many interesting topics were
mentioned like biodegradation and hydrocarbon generation. During the
presentation there were several practical tasks to the audience, which was a great
experience for all students.
13
The second lecture of the day was held by Dr. Joy-Purcell who gave the
participants a detailed introduction on reservoir carbonates. We got to know why
carbonates behave differently as reservoirs compared to other rocks and why they
mean much higher risk as well. In the second presentation she told us the exciting
story about her path and what she went through to reach her successful career.
Then, the lecture became a motivating conversation about the job opportunities
with professionals, professors and students in the industry presently and in the
future. This was a magnificent and sociable closing of the great and motivating
three days.
The program was ended by Prof. Dr. János Haas's (ESC Faculty Advisor) and
Dániel Budai's (Vice President of ESC) final speeches and an acknowledgment to the
lecturers.

Austria Field Trip
6 – 12 September
Between September 6-12 we had a chance together with the Miskolc Student
Chapter and the organizing Bucharest Student Chapter to spend a couple of days in
Austria were we learned a lot about the sedimentology of different reservoirs. On
the first field day we saw Pannonian (Upper Miocene) and Badenian (Middle
Miocene) reservoirs, learned about the sedimentology of coarse grained Gilbert
deltas from Gabor Tari (OMW) we examined basaltic rocks and deformation bands
in Badenian limestone, both of them being important in the compartmentalisation
of reservoirs. On the second and third day, we had an opportunity to look at flysch
and molasse sediments moreover we could see the whole Triassic sequence with
different source and reservoir rocks. The most interesting part was probably a
dolomite quarry where we could understand more thoroughly how the faults
altered the porosity of this type of sedimentary rocks. In summary we learned a lot
about the geology of Eastern/Northern Austria from the Triassic to the Upper
Miocene. I found the field trip very useful both from a geological point of view and
making new friendships with the Romanian students.

AAPG - SEG Field Camp
Integration of Geology and Geophysics
10 – 16 September
The Eötvös SC of AAPG and the Eötvös SC in SEG co-organized the first
international AAPG - SEG Field Camp between the 10th and 16th of September at
the Balaton Highlands. The aim of the field camp was to give an insight to the usage
of near surface geophysical methods solving geological problems. The idea was
born a year ago to integrate practical field geology and geophysics in a field camp.
The following three methods were used:
• Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES)
• Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT)
• Magnetic methods
The 4 geological problems were:
• the depth of the sedimentary infill of maar volcanoes
• determining whether separate basaltic bodies are connected underground
• paleotopography of the Mesosoic basement
• locating fractured zones in carbonate platforms
17
Students came from several countries such as from Hungary, Brazil, Germany,
Scotland. Each participant was assigned to a group of 5-6 people with one of the
four geological problems and it was their job to interpret the results of the
geophysical measurements (ERT, VES, magnetic methods).
The field camp started with short trip to the field to check out measurement sites
and significant outcrops of the region. The following day there were short lectures
on the theoretical background of the used geophysical methods and the geological
setting of the research area.
Also they have heard about the formation of the Pannonian Basin and interpreted a
seismic section from the area of the oldest, still producing oil field in Hungary (Zala
Basin).
18
Student Chapter Activities from July to December 2015
10 – 16 September
During the remaining time of the week the participants were divided into 4
groups each morning, 3 groups carried out geophysical measurements (ERT, VES,
magnetic methods) while 1 group analysed outcrops from a geological point of
view.
The data processing and interpretation of the results happened during the
evenings. It was a good opportunity for students to understand and learn the data
processing method.
Eventually, at the end of the field camp, the participants were required to make a
presentation of what they have achieved during the week, how many questions they
have been able to answer in connection with their assigned geological problem. The
publication of the results is an ongoing project, and will be published in the
immediate future in the Newsletter of the NEAR-SURFACE GEOPHYSICS Technical
Section of The Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

Field trip to the Isle of Skye Scotland
23– 28 September
Three of us had a chance to spend five days in Scotland with students from Lisbon-Poznan-
Paris-Bucharest and from the organizing University of Aberdeen. After the first night and an ice
breaker party we travelled from Aberdeen to Elgol on the Isle of Sky. We had a short stop at
Urqhuart Castle at the shores of the infamous Loch Ness, which was formed due to the Great Glen
Fault. The main topic of the field trip was the compartmentalisation of the reservoirs by volcanic
intrusions. In the case of the Isle of Sky the reservoir rocks are Jurassic sediments while the
intrusions are basaltic sills and dykes and granitic bodies. The island bears a lot key outcrop
analogue for the geology of the sedimentary basins West of Shetland which are volcanic rift
margin basins. There are several significant hydrocarbon discoveries West of Shetland such as the
Clair field and the Rosebank Fields highlighting the importance of understanding the interaction
between volcanics and sedimentary rocks. We have seen interaction between (mainly) sandstones
and various types of volcanic rocks in a various scales. The most spectacular was the alternation
between sandstone and extrusive rocks and dykes in Jurassic tidal sandstones (Elgol Formation).
Moreover we could examine the differences between the weathering of basaltic and granitic
rocks, and how the intrusion forms even fold in sedimentary rocks. It was a nice experience to see
phenomena which can rarely be seen on seismic. It was also great to meet other geologist from all
around the continent and learn from them as well as share our experiences.

Visit of Jászberény Geothermal Exploration site
By favour of MOL and its subsidiary company CEGE Zrt. our student chapter
visited a geothermal drilling site in Jászberény. We were lucky, because the field of
the drilling was showed by a wellsite geologist Kemény Botond, and the senior
engineer who informed us useful information about the well. As a start there was a
safety briefing right after we arrived, then we could see the base of the drilling. We
saw the mud tanks, the agitators, and mud-pump. We were invited to see the actual
work of chemists, and saw samples under a microscope. The parameters of the
current drilling were on a view in the office, near the drilling. The aim of the project is
drilling a geothermal well and developing a multiwell system. The depth of the
drilling is estimated around 3000 meters.

AAPG Miskolc SC Communicational Training
The cooperation of the AAPG Miskolc Student Chapter and AAPG Eötvös
Student Chapter looks back over several years. This was the third time the AAPG
Miskolc SC organized their communicational training. Two members from our SC
were invited. The main goal of the Training was the development of the
communicational capabilities this time. The event was funded by the MOL Plc. The
organizers invited geology and geophysics students and graduated students from
Miskolc and Budapest. The event was coordinated by one professional trainer,
Zoltán Szentesi. It was a really intensive full day training. At the first section we
learned about the personality types and the various communicational strategies
between them. Afternoon we concentrated on simulation exercises. In the
afternoon we learned by playing. Thanks to the trainer the Training was very high
quality I think it was useful for all of us to strengthen our communicational
competencies.

AAPG Eötvös and ELTE SEG Student
Chapter introductory and team building program
As part of our efforts to improve the image of AAPG we organized a team-
building event in Black Gold Club. In the first half of the evening we held a
presentation about the earlier fieldtrips. We presented the benefits of fieldtrips from
team building through inspecting amazing outcrops to brainstorming with
international members. The evening also gave an opportunity to recruit new
members for AAPG as there were a lot of BSc students present even from the
Miskolc University. We covered such topics as the relation of geology and
geophysics because we tried to gain the interest of geophysicist students too.
During the evening they could hear about the future possibilities working as
geologist and the career opportunities in the industry. It was a free-and-easy
evening so after the presentation students could ask the members about future
fieldtrip opportunities, workshops, conferences and the life as an AAPG member in
general. They also had the chance to talk to people from the industry, which was also
very useful. The evening was very popular with more than forty participants. The
experience showed us that such an evening gives invaluable insights to the field of
geology to the students so we hope to be able to organize it time to time.

5th Student Workshop
3rd December
Following a many years old tradition the December AAPG ESC – MFT Student
Workshop was organized by the AAPG Student Chapter and the Hungarian
Geological Society. This year's program featured two talks, one from the
hydrocarbon field, and the other one in structural geology.
The two presentations were held at Eötvös Loránd University. The first lecturer
was János Csizmeg, who introduced us to the hydrocarbon potential and inert gas
risk of the Danube Basin in NW Hungary. As a geologist of the Hungarian Horizon
Energy Ltd. he has done significant research on the possible hydrocarbon potential.
In his talk he introduced hydrocarbon systems of the area as well as the structural
and other geological phenomena that affects the hydrocarbon potential and the
possible migration of inert gas.
After a short break our next lecturer, László Csontos, took us on a fascinating
adventure to the Himalayan orogen. He shared his structural geological
observations and interpretations that he has collected as a geologist for MOL Plc.
During a short prolog we were introduced to the world of the nappe front geometry
in “fold-and-thrust belt-systems”; then, after the brief outline of the geology of the
area, he showed us his interpretations of a few of the axial folds seen during field
work in Pakistan. Both presentations were followed by fascinating discussions.
The audience included a number of students and professors from Eötvös
Loránd University, from Pécs University, the Slovakian Comenius University, the
Italian University of Padova, the Geological and Geophysical Institute of Hungary,
and the coworkers of companies like MOL Plc., Geomega Ltd. and RAG Hungary Ltd.

AAPG Eötvös Chapter – Story of the flyers
At the end of the year our chapter made flyers to popularize the Visiting
Geoscientist Program. The main goal of the flyers was to open the student's eyes to
the fact that they have the opportunity to invite professors and researchers from the
industry to conferences and workshops as well. We marked on the map the
locations of the Visiting Geoscientists, and we generated a QR code for the map so
that students can check it online as well. We hope that with this popularization of
the program we can support relationships among European chapters and we can
assist other chapters in making their life more active and enjoying organizing
programs thus they will collect more members to their chapters.
