PURPOSE1. To provide the participants with an objective,

unbiased educational experience that will enablethem to remain current in both the knowledge andpractical elements of contemporary orthopaedicsurgery.

President’s MessageJavad Parvizi MD, FRCSAs the 49th Eastern Orthopaedic Association Annual Meeting (AmeliaIsland, October 17-20, 2018) approaches, I want to share the EOAleaderships’ excitement about our enhanced program.

Program Chair and academic meeting veteran Kevin Plancher, MD and the EOA Board haveinvested immense energy into making the program special. The Board and our spouseshave spent endless hours on ideas to build on the EOA’s strength and to address members’needs to deliver a better program.

The EOA is a spectacular organization that’s served its members and the orthopaediccommunity at large for 49 years with a dedicated mission to provide solid orthopaediceducation. In line with this mission, we’ve made some exciting changes to the program:

1. For the first time, we will have a Wednesday afternoon activity. A course on coding willbe given by one of the most qualified people on the subject from Karen Zupko &Associates.

2. We’ve extended Thursday to a full afternoon of academic activities, after which all canenjoy libations on the beach at the Welcome Dinner.

3. Numerous respected faculty will deliver lectures on current issues, and debate some ofthese issues together (Kevin has organized an amazing, fun program).

4. For the first time, we will have a debate-style symposium on resident training/education,conducted by Residency Directors and Chairmen from our catchment programs.

5. The Resident Review Course will be moved to Saturday afternoon, with lectures byfaculty from around the country.

6. Concluding the Resident Review Course will be a light-hearted “Resident Competition”with topics relevant to OITE and Board examinations. Generous cash awards will be givento the three top winners.

7. The EOA recognizes the importance of research by young surgeons, and we are a greatvenue for them to present their hot-off-the-press studies. This year, we’ve increased thenumber of Resident Travel Awards (which offset travel/accommodation costs) to over 25.As always, the top three presenters will be selected for presentation at the AAOS AnnualMeeting.

8. This year’s social program has been put on steroids! The Social Committee has arrangedseveral events, including a breakfast for members’ families, for all to mingle and enjoyAmelia Island’s beauty. The Omni Plantation Resort sits on a long stretch of gorgeousbeaches, and three beautiful golf courses provide varying degrees of challenge (I’ll be outthere trying not to use my clubs like shovels!).

My mentor and friend Richard Rothman, a dynamic speaker with a wealth of experience, will deliver the Presidential Guest Lecture. Jefferson Health System President Steve Klasko,MD, who has written extensively on healthcare reform, will share his wisdom on somechallenges we face in modern medicine.

This year will feature academic activity tailored to all members - those super-specializedand rooted in academic centers and those who hold the fort in community orthopaedicpractices. But, there will also be plenty of fun and opportunities for members and theirfamilies to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Please allow us to share our excitement with you at this year’s Annual Meeting. I ampersonally grateful to you all for your dedication to the EOA and its mission, and amhonored to serve you humbly as your President.

Best,

Javad ParviziJavad Parvizi, MD, FRCSPresident, Eastern Orthopaedic Association
