Envirothon
What is it?○ Envirothon is an annual competition in which teams compete
for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management.
○ Includes 5 categories:-○ Aquatics
○ Soils
○ Forestry
○ Wildlife
○ Current Environmental Issues
○ State Competitions: High School teams have to do an Oral Presentation that requires you to present your knowledge of all the tested subjects and use critical thought to solve a complex environmental problem and present your solution to a panel of judges.
○ Problem is given at the competition! You get 65 minutes to prepare and make a poster.
○ You will present as a team.
When and Who?
○ The people who can enter must be a team of 3-5 people. 5 people per team is the best!
○ More than one team from the same school can enter.
○Must be separate registrations.
○ This year’s regional competition is scheduled for 3-18-15 (may change…)
○ Registration forms and notification of the exact competition date will be sent.
○I will immediately notify you when they are sent.
How this works…
○ In the spring, there are eight regional competitions in North Carolina.
○ Our region (Area 8) will have the Southern Piedmont Envirothon competition March 18th , 2015 at Catawba College Center for the Environment in Salisbury.
○ A test is given to select the seven highest scoring teams from each region.
○ GOOD NEWS!! Tests are taken as a team! (YES!!!) You can help each other out!
○ Selected teams will advance to the State Envirothon competition on April 24th and 25th, 2015 at Cedarock Park in Burlington, NC.
Test Stations (Categories)
○ The five test stations will cover the following topics:-
○ Wildlife
○ Wildlife covers habitat, identification, foods, rules & regulations, diseases, and management.
○ Aquatics
○ Aquatics covers ecology of water, stream improvement ,water chemistry, water quality, plants and animals living in or around water, pollution, and conservation.
○ Forestry
○ Forestry covers tree identification, improvement of timber stands, forest ecology, insects, diseases, forest management, and forest measurements.
○ Soils
○ Soils covers maps, classification, erosion, soil surveys, site suitability, current issues, profiles, soil characteristics, and conservation practices.
○ Current Environmental Issues
○ Current Environmental Issues cover any current or newsworthy environmental issue.
Training for Envirothon
○ I will be your coach (manager person) and we have many returning members to help as well!
○ We will meet on Fridays, and commitment is essential to succeed in the competition!!
○ Every meeting I will have an activity that will cover the material we need to study for the competition. (Tree identification, jeopardy, museum trips)
