Accidental Releases
3
Every hydrocarbon or chemical release that reachesthe marine environment, whatever the size, isreported to the Offshore Petroleum Regulator for theEnvironment and Decommissioning (OPRED) throughsubmission of a PON1.
The overview and analysis that follows is based on thepublicly available 2016 PON1 report data.
Oil & Gas UK conduct analysis to attribute all releasesto the relevant source, and for the chemical releases,to the relevant hazard category.

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries andAquaculture Science (CEFAS) is the custodian of theOffshore Chemical Notification Scheme (OCNS)under which all chemicals used offshore areregistered, and assigned to a category based ontheir ecotoxicity
This is used to assign the named chemicals in thePON1 to a hazard category

Oil Releases in Context

Data produced by the International Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) and Norwegian Oil and Gas (NOROG) for 2016 allows us to calculate releases normalised against production
– Globally – 0.1 tonnes
– Europe – 0.5 tonnes
– Norway - 0.17 tonnes
– UK – 1.35 tonnes (0.23 tonnes excluding outlier)
*All figures are in tonnes released per million tonnes of production
