SEMESTER EXCHANGE IN AVEIRO study for one semester at portugal's leading university UNIVERSIDADE DE AVEIRO Created in 1973, the University of Aveiro has quickly become one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in Portugal. As public foundation operating under private law, it develops its mission to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education, to generate research and to promote cooperation with society. UA has achieved a significant position amongst higher education institutions in Portugal, being one of the top universities regarding the quality of its infrastructures, the strength of its research and the excellence of its staff. It is attended by some 15,000 students. Location Aveiro is located in the central coastal region of Portugal, about two hours driving distance north of Lisbon. Aveiro is surrounded by a distinctive delta called the Vouga Delta, better known as Ria de Aveiro. Aveiro is served by excellent rail and road connections to Lisbon and to the inland towns as well as to the close by cities of Oporto and Coimbra. Sá Carneiro international airport, which is less than 1 hour away, provides convenient connections throughout Europe. Accommodation Exchange students receive help from the International Office to find accommodation in one of the University Halls of Residence. For students who do not live at the Universi- ty Halls there are other options. With the help of the Erasmus Student Network (ESN), many students look for flats close to the campus or in the nearby city centre. Typical prices for student accommodation range from €180 to €250 per month. Living costs As an estimate, a student in Aveiro will need somewhere between €550 and €600 per month for accommodation, eating, transport, study material and other basic expenses. Visas Non-EU students should check whether they need a visa and a residence permit. Students make their visa request in their home country, at the Portuguese consulate, before travelling to Portugal. Student Life Students at UA have a lot of support from the University and from each other. The Students Union and the University Social Services provide shops, advice centres, medical care, sports facilities and entertain- ment. The University departments and central services organise hundreds of events each year, providing students with opportu- nities to pursue their personal interests, whether it be in science, technology, business or the arts. Fees:

· Visiting Students - EUR 1500,00

· Fee waivers may apply in the case of student

exchange schemes like Erasmus.

· Students wishing to do a single course unit

from an Exchange Package can opt to apply

for “isolated course units” where the fees

range from €40,00 - €60.00 per ECTS credit,

depending on subject area.

COURSE UNITS

· 40501 Urban Metabolism (6,0 ECTS)

Urban metabolism considers the quantifica-

tion of inputs, outputs and storage of energy,

water, nutrients, materials and wastes of

urban regions. It can be defined as the sum of

technical and socio-economic processes that

occur in cities, resulting in growth, production

of energy and elimination of waste. Students

are call back to use their knowledge on

biology, ecosystems, transport phenomena

and modelling. Urban metabolism has the

potential to support environmental profes-

sionals in tackling today’s energy and

environmental dilemmas by providing an

integrated platform for analysing both energy

patterns and causal processes that govern

energy in contemporary cities, as well as for

evaluating environmental sustainability

indicators supporting both Strategic Environ-

mental Assessment and Environmental

Impact Assessment.

· 47343 Environmental Management

Systems (6,0 ECTS)

This unit course aims to provide students with

knowledge to understand, establish, and

assess the elements of Environmental

Management Systems (EMS) and Instruments

according to several frameworks. Specifically:

Identification of several voluntary instruments

for the environmental and social promotion of

organizations and products/services;

Concepts related to environmental manage-

ment systems, standard frameworks and their

requirements; Understanding of the similari-

ties between quality, environmental and

occupational health management systems, in

order to attain systems integration; Capacity

to establish EMS elements; Capacity to

perform small audits and elaborate the

respective plans and reports; Capacity to

establish and integrate environmental and

social management instruments for organiza-

tions and their products/services.

· 48227 Natural, Technological And

Industrial Risk (8,0 ECTS)

Concepts: Hazard, Risk ,Disaster and

Vulnerability; Risk Assessment and Manage-

ment; Risk perception and communication;

Natural Hazards ( floods, droughts, fires,

coastal erosion, diseases and epidem-

ics);Technological Hazards ( major industrial

accidents, accidents associated with

transportation of dangerous goods, dam

failure, etc.); Social Vulnerability; Civil

Protection Agency.

· 43160 Planning and Integrated

Management of Coastal Zones (6,0 ECTS)

Students taking the course will acquire

knowledge on: (i) evolution and contemporary

importance of coastal issues at international,

European and Portuguese level. (ii) concepts

and definitions about the scientific and

technical bases and discussion of sectorial

perspectives (iii) the need for coastal

management and its benefits. (iv) coastal

management programmes – principles, goals

and objectives, evaluation of pre-conditions

to coastal zone management program

development; (v) coastal management actors

– governmental institutions, non-governmen-

tal groups and citizens; (vi) coastal planning

strategies – planning and management

models, public policies. (vii) monitoring and

evaluation Instruments – sustainable

development indicators, monitoring

programs; and (viii) information, training and

education – the needs for information, training

and education.

(6,0 ECTS)

Introduction to the fundamentals of conver-

sion of renewable energy sources, namely: 1.

Ocean Thermal Energy Converters (OTEC); 2.

Solar radiation; 3. Wind energy; 4. Biomass.
