COURSE UNITS

· 48088 Environmental Planning

(6,0 ECTS)

This course aims to provide students with

knowledge and skills to: (i) understand the

importance of the territory dimension for

environmental problems comprehension,

minimization and prevention; (ii) be able to do

spatial analyses and identification of

potentialities and vulnerabilities; (iii) under-

stand technical, procedural and political

specificities of planning processes; (iv) to

know how to actively participate in the

planning processes, through critical analyses

of territorial information and associated

decision making contexts, and contribute to

the adoption of sustainable development

strategies.

· 47955 Environmental Impact

Assessment (6,0 ECTS)

The aim of the course is to learn the interna-

tional theory, the practical process, terminolo-

gy and methods of performing an Environ-

mental Impact Assessment. The course will

provide practical opportunities for students to

participate in reviewing and criticizing current

environmental impact statements, as well as

to use various assessment methods.

Students in this course gain practical field

experience in applying principles and theories

of environmental impact assessments.

· 40498 Industrial Ecology (6,0 ECTS)

After a brief introduction to Industrial Ecology

students will be able to: analyse industrial

systems as an integral part of environmental

systems, understand the relationship between

production, consumption, sustainability and

industrial ecology and understand and apply

industrial ecology quantitative analytical

methods.

· 47555 Energy and Environment (6,0 ECTS)

A vision of world, European and Portuguese

energy panorama will be provided. Sustaina-

ble development and climate change are

discussed within an energy framework and

instruments of environmental policy are

presented. Fundamental concepts of Energy

and Economics are presented, in particular

financial math applied to energy projects.

Later on in the course, fundamental concepts

like energy, entropy and exergy are connected

and integrated into thermo-economic

concepts. Different fuels and energy

conversion systems will be described,

mentioning also systems for energy storage

and energy-saving technologies.

· 40499 Environmental Systems Modelling

(6,0 ECTS)

The aim of this unit is to introduce to

students the idea, methodology and basic

tools of environmental modelling. Different

type of models are described and worked

and insights into dynamical systems

modelling are provided. This course presents,

discusses and applies different type of

models to several environmental areas, such

as water, air, solid waste and energy. The

integrated assessment concept is the final

component of this course, making the link

between environmental systems and

cost-efficiency analysis based on the DPSIR

framework system.
