Schools have an important contribution in developing
sensitivity towards the environment. It is very
important to begin this process of developing a
positive attitude towards the environment right from
the beginning as soon as the students enter formal
school. The skills, habits, attitudes and values thus
inculcated stay throughout one’s life and becomes a
guiding force for generations to come. All this puts the
onus of taking care of the environment on the young
shoulders, who now feel strongly towards saving their
environment. This also helps them develop the sense
of belongingness towards their school and environment
and eventually to the planet Earth.

• SOLAR CELL PANELThe school produces its own electricity by harnessing solar energy. The
school installed 100 kiloWatts (kW) of solar power, which provides us
with nearly 50 percent of the energy requirements.
![Page 5: ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY SCHOOL](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081503/62a21db70aa3d50afe0dc9a3/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
• RAIN WATER HARVESTING The school, which began harvesting rainwater in 2017, has retrofitted the
roof of the building to collect rainwater, which is then directed for
underground recharge.
![Page 6: ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY SCHOOL](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081503/62a21db70aa3d50afe0dc9a3/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
• COMPOSTING IN SCHOOL Students collect biodegradable waste (tea leaves and vegetable peels)
from school canteen and collect manure produced in composter to
spread it in the school garden
![Page 7: ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY SCHOOL](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081503/62a21db70aa3d50afe0dc9a3/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
• ENERGY SAVING MECHANISMSchool has put LEDs in place of normal tube lights, Quiet ceiling
fans, Buying less energy consuming devices, Push taps for which
closes on their own controlling wastage of water.
Regulation of educational space taking into consideration
environmental factors and contingencies in the face of
natural disasters and Specially abled students like ramp
and lift.

PLANTATION The Herbal Garden and the Vegetable Garden are maintained by the
students, using compost prepared in the school.
Also the plants in the school lawns are labelled.

CLASSROOM DESIGN
Classroom are designed keeping in mind maximum use of daylight
instead of tubelights. They are very well ventilated and airy
![Page 10: ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY SCHOOL](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081503/62a21db70aa3d50afe0dc9a3/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
ADOPTING OXYGEN EXUDING PLANTS in classroomsAfter studying pollution levels for a month, oxygen exuding plants were
adopted by each classroom for air quality improvement , humdification
and reduction in energy use. Plant Adoption Day was celebrated.
![Page 11: ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY SCHOOL](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081503/62a21db70aa3d50afe0dc9a3/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
MAKING TERRARIUMS AND MINIATURE GARDENS.
In continuation with the above, the students also initiated learning about
oxygen exuding plants and making terrariums and miniature gardens.
![Page 12: ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY SCHOOL](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081503/62a21db70aa3d50afe0dc9a3/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Disposal off the e-waste responsibly by sending it to back
to dealers, manufacturers or dismantlers or giving it away
for use somewhere else.
Donating the old furniture to schools or orphanages.

• WATER PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION
Students are made aware about the need to conserve water as water
is a precious resource. The senior students guide the younger ones
not to waste water, water left in their bottles are not put in the basin
but they are educated to use it to water the plants. Senior students
take session on depleting water levels and to use water judiciously
as every drop of water counts. In Geography classes, students are
taught about community-based water conservation techniques used
in medieval times like stepwells and Baolis.
JUDICIOUS USE OF ELECTRICITY –
Reminders are put in classes and labs to turn off the lights and
Electricity Managers are appointed in the class to monitor the same
ECO CLUB
Engages students in programs and activities to encourage them to be
more responsible towards environment. Some of the Eco club
initiatives are as follows-
![Page 15: ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY SCHOOL](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081503/62a21db70aa3d50afe0dc9a3/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

The aim of the project is to collaborate witha partner school and perform a comparativestudy of the benefits and harmful effects oftechnology upon the environment withrespect to India, Bhutan and China amongfew other countries. Students will mutuallyexchange different ways in which theircountry uses Technology in the right way.
Technology Vs Environment: What is our Role?
![Page 17: ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY SCHOOL](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081503/62a21db70aa3d50afe0dc9a3/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
THE CORE IDEA BEHIND THISPROJECT
In order to shape attitude of students towards the
environment during formative years, a number of activities
will be done. Students will themselves collect information
, conduct surveys, take part in Debate competition and
know how important Environment protection is. The
activities will create an understanding of the
consequences of human actions for the earth and its
resources and how other countries are dealing with it;
They will brainstorm, think of solutions and create a blog
to sensitize globally . The objective is to transform the
young minds into responsible citizens of the earth.
![Page 18: ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY SCHOOL](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081503/62a21db70aa3d50afe0dc9a3/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)

CHINA
Floating Solar Power Plant
China is investing more in wind, hydro, and solar power compared to other countries. In fact, its 40MW floating solar power plant is the largest in the world.
Waste-to-Energy Plant
Scheduled to be operational by 2020,the Shenzhen East Waste-to-Energy Plant will use
the most advanced technology in waste incineration and power generation. It is expected to incinerate
5,000 tons of waste per day.
China is no longer world's
dumping ground, but cleaning up
its own backyard is proving to be
a challenge
China has banned 24 kinds of waste
from abroad in effort to tackle
growing environmental disaster

INDIA
The major steps being taken by the Government to control pollution inter alia include the following:-(i)Notification of National Ambient Air Quality Standards(ii)Formulation of environmental regulations / statutes(iii)Setting up of monitoring networkfor assessment of ambient air quality(iv)Introduction of cleaner / alternate fuels like gaseous fuel (CNG, LPG etc.), ethanol blend etc.
