India has the third largest higher education system in the world
8
India already has world class educational institutions like IITs, IIMs, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences; etc.
9
One of the reasons for the phenomenal success of
the IITs and the IIMs was the assistance they got
from reputed foreign universities.
10
• United States get $16 billion dollars through education.
• Australia, Singapore, United Kingdom and other advanced countries earn huge sum in the education sector. Education is the second largest foreign exchange earner in these countries.
• On the contrary India sends 1,60,000 students every year to United States and attracts only 9000 students from all over the world
11
The recent London Times Higher Education Supplement ranking of the world's top 200 universities included :
• three in China,
• three in Hong Kong,
• three in South Korea,
• one in Taiwan,
• and one in India (Indian Institute of Technology)
12
China is providing access to large numbers of students at the bottom of the academic system while at the same time building some research-based universities that are able to compete with the world's best institutions.
China in particular is heavily investing in improving its best universities with the aim of making a small group of them world class in the coming decade, and building them as internationally competitive research universities.13
INTEREST OF FOREIGN UNIVERSITIES IN INDIA
Nearly 50 proposals from foreign universities including:
are expected to be waiting for the Government’s clearance.14
HBS is keen to find permanent premises for its executive education programs instead of conducting classes at five-star hotels in prominent Indian cities.
