Inthe2016-17schoolyear,89%ofstudentswereeconomicallydisadvantaged,surpassingourenrollmenttargetby0.5percentagepoints.Theschool’ssuccessinrecruitingandenrollingstudentsfromlow-incomefamiliesispartiallyduetotheneighborhoodsinwhichourstudentsreside(oneofthepoorestCongressionalDistricts)andpartiallyduetoourrecruitmentefforts.WearededicatedtoservingstudentsinHuntsPointandintheSouthBronxand,therefore,wefocusmostofourstudentrecruitmentintheseareas,whicharepredominantlylow-incomeneighborhoods.
AswesurpassedtheenrollmenttargetforEconomicallyDisadvantagedstudentsin2016-17,BronxArtswillutilizethesameeffortsin2017-18.
EnglishLanguageLearners
Inthepastyear,17%ofstudentswereEnglishLanguageLearners,exceedingtheenrollmenttargetforthissubgroupby4.5percentagepoints.ToattractELLstudents,allofourrecruitmentandenrollmentmaterialsarepreparedinSpanishaswellasEnglish.ToincreaseenrollmentofELLstudents,theschool’sstaffidentifyandpartnerwithseveralprivatelyoperatedpreschoolprovidersthatcatertopopulationswithLatinAmericanandCaribbeanbackgroundandWestAfricanimmigrants.Recruitmentstrategiesincludebothscheduledonsiteandoffsitepresentationsconductedbytheschool’sstaffincludingtranslationinthelanguage(s)spokenby

StudentswithDisabilities
FortherecruitmentofStudentswithDisabilities(20%oftotalstudentbodyvs.targetof19.5%),wereliedonastrongrelationshipwiththeCommitteeonSpecialEducation,whichfrequentlyrefersparentsofspecialneedsstudentstoourschool.Inordertoincreasethepoolofpotentialapplicants,theschoolconductedfurtheroutreachtotheCommitteeonSpecialEducationtoencourageparentswhoresidewithinCommunitySchoolDistrict8toapplythroughthelotteryorwaitinglist.Inaddition,theschoolcontinuedtoworkcloselywiththeCommitteeonSpecialEducation(CSE)toensuretimelyevaluation,identification,reviewandplacementofstudents.
AswesurpassedtheenrollmenttargetforStudentswithDisabilitiesin2016-17,BronxArtswillutilizethesameeffortsin2017-18.

ToretainStudentswithDisabilitiesin2016-17,BronxArtsensuredthatallstudentshadequalopportunitytoparticipateintheschoolcommunity.Theschoolworkeddiligentlytocultivateanenvironmentthatwassupportiveforanyfamiliesinneed.Forexample,uniformswereprovidedfreeofchargeforanyfamilieswhocouldnotaffordthem.Inaddition,wheneverpossible,theschooldoesnotchargeforfieldtripsandspecialprograms,andifthereisaminimalcharge,theschoolispreparedtocoverthisexpenseifneeded.
BronxArtsplanstoutilizethesamestrategiestoretainEconomicallyDisadvantagedstudentsinthecomingyear,althoughrevisionstospecificservicesmaybemadeifwarrantedbychangingneedsofstudents,familiesandthebroaderschoolcommunity.
InordertoretainandaccommodatestudentswhoareidentifiedasEnglishLanguageLearnersandtheirfamilies,allparentnoticesandre-registrationmaterialswereprovidedinSpanishandEnglish.TranslationserviceswereofferedatallmajorBronxArtseventsandparent-teacherconferencesasneeded.TheschoolalsohiredafulltimecertifiedESLteachertoprovidetargetedinstructionsforallstudentsidentifiedasEnglishLanguage

Learners,implementedthenewESLstandards,andusedtheCornerstonecurriculumbyPearsonforinstruction.Duringtheschoolyear,allEnglishLanguageLearnersalsoattendedthevariousextendedlearningopportunitiesprogramsincludingAfterSchool,SaturdaySchoolandIntersessionprograms.Inaddition,theschool’scurriculumincorporatesunitsofstudyintheliteracy,socialstudiesandtheArtsthatreflecttheethnicandculturalheritagesofitsvariousstudentpopulations.TheannualcalendarofperformancesandrelatedeventswaspromotedinthecommunitywiththeintenttoprovideamoreinclusiveenvironmentforcommunitymemberswithlimitedEnglishproficiency.

StudentswithDisabilities
ToretainStudentswithDisabilities,BronxArtsprovidedextensiveprogrammingexceedingallIEPrequirementsthroughsixICTclassrooms,aSETTSprovider,SpecialEducationDirector,SocialWorkerandGuidanceCounselor.ThroughthedualuseofICTandSETTS,theschoolofferedstudentsmoresupportthanwasmandatedbystudentIEPstoensurethatstudentshadtheresourcesnecessaryfortheirsuccess.StudentsalsoreceivedadditionalsupportfromtheSpecialEducationDirectorandLearningSpecialistswhentheypushedintoclassrooms.
Specialeducationandgeneraleducationco-teacherscollaborateddailytoplaninstruction,lessonsandunitsforallstudents.Schoolleadersreviewedtheselessonplansweekly.TheSpecialEducationDirectorobservedICTclassroomsweeklyandprovidedimmediatefeedback,coachingandmodelingoneffectivedifferentiationtechniques.TheSpecialEducationDirectoralsocollaboratedwithteacherstoevaluateandprovidefeedbacktoco-teachingpairs.TheSpecialEducationDirector,SocialWorkerandGuidanceCounseloralsoprovidemandatedcounselingtostudentswhoseIEPsrequireit.
Parentswerekeptcontinuallyinformedoftheirchild'sprogressthroughfrequentandconsistentcommunication.
