Berlin‘s entrepreneurial ecosystem -

general remarks

• Cultural change : Millenials see

traditional career path as unattractive

• Increasing „tech“-start-ups by

young people (18-30) instead of 50+

• Consequences of the crisis in 2008:

discouragement to strive for a „normal“ job

• “Start-ups are not small versions of big companies

Page 40: Entrepreneurship Campus at Business Park Hussein

In 2015, 371 companies in Germany received

Venture Capital.

There were 205 new financing rounds in 2015,

up by 85 % compared to 2014.

Every second of those investments (in total

over 3 billion Euros) went to startups from

Berlin (2.1 billion Euros).

Some numbers…

caveat

• Most start-ups do not survive the first 5 years (tough in

the beginning)

• Lifestyle changes due to start-up scene in Berlin:

everything gets more expansive

• Not everybody wants to be an entrepreneur

• Do they really make the world a better place?

We are facing piles of challenges, e.g.:

• climate change,

• shortage of industrial resources,

• peak oil,

• shortage of water,

• pollution,

• increasing inequality…

to name just a few

Page 51: Entrepreneurship Campus at Business Park Hussein

We need new types of entrepreneurs –

call them social, environmental

or even cultural entrepeneurs –

that create new avenues and solutions

Page 52: Entrepreneurship Campus at Business Park Hussein

Source: Stiftung Entrepreneurship

We need „creative destruction“ of an economy

which is driven by greed, unsustainable use of

resources and exploitation of the weakness of

people and their sense of inferiority.

Page 53: Entrepreneurship Campus at Business Park Hussein

When we talk about employment,

we should talk about entrepreneurship.

And when we talk about employability,

we should talk about empowerment

to create a business venture,

to be open for new ideas and

to be alert for new opportunities.
