Discuss some factors that have influenced the entrance of women in the Mauritian labour

market during the last few decades 0

    1. "ntrod ction

The structure of the labour market in Mauritius has evolved over time, with the advent of fundamental

structural changes in the Mauritian economy over the last 30 years.

There is no denying the fact that women play a pivotal role in our society. They often are the driving force

behind the survival of families; they support socio-economic development; and in this sense are strategic to

the attainment of the developmental goals of our nation.

omen have shaken off confined and traditional roles, they are now independent en!oy social freedom,

economic independence and e"ual rights. #ma$ingly women are now outperforming men in many domains.

They prove that they are at par with them intellectually and physically.

%mpirical evidence worldwide has demonstrated that empowering women can yield enormous benefits for

the overall human welfare of nations.

2.0 FACTORS INFLUENCING THE ENTRANCE OF WOMEN IN MAURITIAN LABOUR

2.1 Educational olici!" and t!#tia#$ !ducation

&eedless to say that the role and responsibilities of women have evolved with changing times.

#ccess to better education, opportunities of employment and financial independence have increased their

ability to take decisions regarding their chosen course of lives.

'econdary education proved to be a significant determinant of female labour participation rate in Mauritius

&o doubt that much emphasis has been laid for access to education since independence as it is the key for

economic stability and pivotal for development. #s the famous saying goes (to educate a woman is toeducate a whole society.) The need to develop a culture and a new mindset that encourages women)s

emancipation recalling that nowadays it is not physical capabilities that matter but knowledge. That is why

*overnment has laid much emphasis on education, knowledge and training to ensure a better future for its

    citi$ens

Thus from discrimination, persecution, stereotyping or even illiteracy, Mauritian women are now respected,

valued and are e+celling at all levels. They are emancipated and are even out doing their male counterparts

in many domains. n fact women are performing !obs that were once considered as male oriented.

#grarian and feudal societies had firm belief in the primogeniture concept; that is only men had the right to

inherit land and women were considered as the second se+ . 'egregated in household chores, women)s

roles were confined in child rearing and family commitment only. /ut with the passage of time society has

undergone gradual conceptual changes, from industrial to modern, then western societies have emerged.

/eing part of this global village, Mauritius had to adopt and adapt to this trend, and bring forward radical

change in the societal stratification vis- -vis women. More and more women emerged from households to

    overflow the local labour market.

ith the government)s new policies, such as education to all children until 12 years old, are allowing

education to be compulsorily accessible to everyone. More and more women are attaining tertiary education

with the mushroom rise of tertiary institutes and universities around the island. There are, thus, additional

numbers of woman graduates. omen are therefore getting more and more empowered and attaining higher

grades posts gradually reaching 3 4 in 5010. The table below, from the 'tatistics office, reflects same.
