EDISON TO HOST FALL FAMILY SPECTACULAR

The Edison Fall Family Spectacular is on the move. This year’s festival will be held in the Clara Barton section of Edison on Saturday, September 23rd. All of the action will be held along Amboy Avenue, from Jackson to Waltuma; a full eight blocks of entertainment, exhibitors, and food and merchandise vendors. Add a kid’s area, carnival rides, professional wrestling, and two stages of music and you’ve got a great day for the whole family.

EDISON TO HOLD 9/11 REMEMBERANCE CEREMONY

Edison Township will hold a Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, September 11, 2017 to remember those lost 16 years ago on that infamous day. The event will take place at the Papaianni Park Memorial Fountain, 100 Municipal Blvd. Please call Edison Recreation at 732-248-7310 for details.

TOWER OF TERROR-TRAIL OF HORROR

Again this year, to celebrate Halloween; we will be conducting visits to the Tower of Terror/Trail of Horror at the Edison Tower on Christie Street. The trail of horror might be too intense for the young or timid, but very entertaining for the bold and the brave. There will also be other activities; such as, a Family Pumpkin Carving Contest, DJ Music, Pumpkin Decorating, Magic and Vendors/Exhibitors. RECREATION OFFERS “FOWL” SHOOTING CONTEST This is a Thanksgiving event but no turkeys need to be sacrificed at the basketball foul shooting contest. EDISON BOYS BASEBALL completed a successful recreation season (our 64th) capped by our year end picnic. The “Sandlot Program, which is based off of the “open gym concept” where players come to work on specific skills in a practice setting with coaches. Thanks to all the coaches who have given their time to this program. The travel program enjoyed a strong summer with both the 8U American and 12 U teams participating in the State Tournament. TOWNSHIP TO OFFER WINTER BASKETBALL LEAGUE FOR ADULTS Applications for the 2018 season are available now at both recreation centers and the recreation office. EDISON SKATEBOARD PARK The Edison Skateboard Park, located opposite the Edison Municipal Complex, 100 Municipal Boulevard, Edison, has been completely renovated!! TOWNSHIP OFFERS LINE DANCING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADULTS Line dance lessons are offered at the Stelton Community Center on Monday evenings from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Learn the latest line dances and improve on the old. Dance is a great way to exercise! All participants must be registered community center members. The annual adult membership is good from July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018, $20.00 for residents & $40.00 for non-residents.

CHILDREN’S JUJITSU—Danzan Tyu Jujitsu is a nonaggressive form of self-defense in which the students will learn how to escape from various holds, hold an opponent on the ground, fall safely and throw an attacker. They will also grow in their leadership abilities and self-confidence. Classes are open to children from ages 7 and up and are led by Professor Barb Gessner, 7th degree black belt, who has been teaching Jujitsu for over 44 years. EDISON EVERBRIGHT WILL OFFER TAIJI, MATH, ENGLISH & ART – Taiji is one category of Qi/Gong, Gongfu. It has about 1000 years of history. It emphasizes mind and body in harmony with peace. By doing Taiji, the practitioners achieve internal strength and external beauty. Taiji quan is called “moving meditation” which is mostly the mental activity paying attention to the internal feeling to make sure that Qi flows smoothly, fluidly and reaches all parts of the body. EDISON FLIPPING OVER ACROBATIC GYMNASTICS—Acrobatics is a sport with beauty and art and a combination of gymnastics, choreography and fitness. September 25, 2017– November 20, 2017 The Edison Recreation Department, through the Stelton & Minnie B. Veal Community Centers is pleased to announce the following Classes for all Edison Adults.

To participate in these classes, all adults must be registered prior to attending the class. Registration forms with fee must be brought or mailed to the Recreation Office, 100 Municipal Blvd., Edison, 08817.

The classes are free to Edison Seniors, age 65 and older, if they are registered with the Senior Citizen Office, 2963

Woodbridge Avenue, Edison. They must show their card to be given free membership. For more information, call the Stelton Community Center from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. at 732-248-7313. The Minnie B. The Elite Runners Track Club is a 501 (c)(3) non profit youth organization based in Edison TWP; offering a year round program consisting of 3 seasons: Cross Country, Winter Track, and Spring/Summer Track. Programs offered by the Elite Runners are sanctioned by the New Jersey chapter of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and the USA Track & Field Association (USATF); training in all aspects of the sport is provided by USATF certified coaches for boys and girls starting at age 6 thru 17 years.

The program caters to all athletes with various skill levels; from beginner to those at an advanced level and preparing for a higher level of training and competition. Many athletes have started at the Beginner level and through training advanced to National events held nationwide; this could be you.

Rutgers Children’s Jujitsu Classes

Thursday Evenings from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm At the Stelton Community Center, 328 Plainfield Avenue, Edison, Room 202

These classes are open to children age 7 and up. Participants will be divided appropriately by age and learn how to escape from various holds, hold an opponent on the ground, fall safely and throw an attacker. They will also take turns leading exercises, giving them the opportunity to grow in their leadership abilities and in self-confidence. The children will work toward promotions in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu as extended members of Rutgers Jujitsu.

Barbara Gessner, 7th degree Professor of Jujitsu and 5th degree Black Belt in Judo, has been teaching Judo & Jujitsu for 44 years, 38 of those at Rutgers University. Black Belt Instructors and members of Rutgers Kodenkan Jujitsu Club assist Professor Gessner with instruction. All instructors have undergone background checks and are experienced in working with children through adults.

The fee for instruction is $50 per month. Two members of the same family are $90 per month. Three members of the same family are $125 per month. Classes will run continuously throughout the year.

Enrollment will include registration with a national Jujitsu organization. Children will also receive their own uniforms.

Danzan Ryu Jujitsu is an effective system of non-aggressive self-defense that incorporates physical and mental training within a philosophy of ethical and moral development. The arts are taken from Judo, Kempo and other Japanese martial arts as well as Hawaiian Lua.

Taiji is one category of QiGong(Gongfu). It has about 1000 years of history. At ancient time, Taiji was one of the fighting techniques. Now, it is a very popular martial art sport. It emphasizes mind and body in harmony with peace. By doing Taiji, the practitioners achieve internal strength and external beauty. As a health exercise, Taiji quan is called "moving meditation" that is mostly the mental activity paying attention to the internal feeling, to make sure that Qi flows smoothly, fluidly and reaches all parts of the body. As a martial art, Taiji quan builds up firm rooting and develops sharp awareness. It is of the whole system including two person push hand and different weapons. Master FengMing Wang and Prof. Mr. Kai Li are famous Taiji and Bagua master. The teachers have many years of teaching experience and have numerous awards from many Gongfu (Wushu) competitions and conferences. It is an honor to have them as our Taiji, Bagua and Gongfu QiGong teachers.

To participate in these classes, all teens must have a valid Edison Teen Center membership and must register for each class. TRAIL OF HORROR & HARVEST FUN DATE: SATURDAY – OCTOBER 28, 2017

PLACE: THOMAS EDISON CENTER AT MENLO PARK 37 CHRISTIE STREET, EDISON,NJ (Free Parking along Street).

The timid and frail of heart can join us for some Harvest Fun, which will include DJ Music/Games, Pumpkin Decorating, Magic Show at 5:00 p.m., a Family Pumpkin Carving Contest, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Face Painting and Vendors & Exhibitors. You must be pre-registered to attend the Harvest Fun Event and/or participate in the pumpkin carving contest, which will be limited to the first 15 families who register. You bring the carving tools and we will supply the pumpkin. For the daring and courageous, with the assistance of the Edison High School Drama Club, we bring you the Trail of Horror. As you walk down the trail, your nerves will be tested as you are greeted by several frightening sights and circumstances. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration required. You may pre-register or register the day of the event. Trail is first come first served starting at 7:00 pm in groups of 12 people.
