News & trendsBusiness rates - retail reliefThe retail sector is changing and many hospitality providers, including pubs and bars, may experience challenges as they look to adapt to changing consumer preferences in how people shop and buy. As a

result of current market conditions, the Government has announced that for 2015-16 the amount of retail relief for all occupied retail properties with a rateable value of £50,000 or less will be increased to £1500. To find out if you will benefit from retail relief, and for further information, visit www.gov.uk/dclg

The Cask ReportThe latest edition of the annual Cask Report reveals that cask beer lovers are more valuable to pubs than any other category of drinkers. According to the report, written by beer writer and industry commentator Pete Brown, cask ale drinkers visit the pub twice as often as the average pub-goer. In addition, their average spend, including food and drink, is almost double that of the general population, nearly two-thirds higher than wine drinkers and nearly 50% greater than those who drink spirits or other types of beer.

“Cask ale drinkers are a lifeline to tens of thousands of British pubs,” said Mr Brown. “But it’s not just the money they themselves are spending that makes these drinkers so important. It’s also the fact that they bring other people with them. Our research shows that 70% of cask ale drinkers take the lead when deciding which pub to go to with a group of friends.” Pete adds, “This means that cask drinkers are more ‘regular’ than other drinkers – 50% of them going to the pub once a week or more – helping to fill the venue and create atmosphere. They are a quintessential part of ‘pubiness’, helping differentiate the pub from other food and drink outlets.”– See insert for more details or download the report by visiting cask-marque.co.uk

Pubs in Bloom

This year, 440 pubs entered and the standards were exceptional – from brightly coloured window boxes and hanging baskets to rural pub gardens.

Following a nationwide search across Enterprise Inn’s 18 regional divisions, the winners of our popular ‘Pubs in Bloom’ competition, which celebrates Publicans who have worked hard on their outdoor areas, creating enjoyable and inviting spaces for customers are now unveiled.

However big or small, each winning pub provided plenty of kerb appeal – a key factor in driving footfall and sales. Each regional winner received £500,

with divisional winners receiving a total of £1,500 to spend on improving and adding to the ambience and atmosphere of their pub.

Making the most of coffeeCoffee is no longer a drink enjoyed solely after an evening meal. British consumers have fully embraced the recent boom in coffee culture, demonstrating a real opportunity for pubs to improve their footfall and sales during typically quieter times of the day.

Consumers are becoming coffee connoisseurs and are less satisfied by a standard brew of black coffee. There’s a really strong opportunity to increase your share in the competitive coffee market by following these steps to create the perfect percolation!

• Customers expect a higher standard of coffee than they did five years ago. Provide high quality blends and varied offers to encourage repeat visits, night and day

• Make sure customers are aware of your offer. Use A-boards to market to passers-by, display coffee variants on blackboards and behind the bar and don’t forget to include coffee within the standard menu

• Offer a variety alongside standard lattes, cappuccinos and mochas.

Most popular liqueur coffees

Irish Cream Coffee – served with an Irish cream

French Coffee – served with orange liqueur

Irish Coffee – served with whiskey

Italian Classico – served with amaretto

Introducing flavoured syrups that change seasonally allows beverages to be charged at a premium, increasing sales opportunities

• Upsell alongside food such as ‘cake and a coffee’ and offer a ‘go large’ option to increase profit opportunities

• Introducing a loyalty card that can be redeemed for a free coffee following multiple purchases will ensure repeat visits

Festive cheer! The Lamb Inn, WorleThe Lamb Inn, Worle, will be transformed into a winter wonderland this December as the pub opens its doors as Santa’s grotto to the local community, including a nativity scene played out in the garden. In addition, on the 6th of December the pub will hold a charity drive, encouraging visitors to donate Christmas presents to local children who would otherwise go without gifts this year. The event will include live music, food and festive drinks. Publican Mandy Dexter comments: “The event raised over £1000 in 2014 and we can’t wait to open our doors to support such a good cause this Christmas.”Watch this space for an update on money raised in the New Year!

Voted for by members of the public, the award acknowledged the pub for its high level of effort, commitment and time spent on the local community.“I had no idea we’d been nominated until the Council contacted me,” said Publican Sharon Herron, “but I must say, I can’t take all the glory – my staff, customers and people from around the village help me raise money and support a whole host of local charities and organisations.” Community initiatives supported by the pub include free minibus travel to and from several independent living centres in the area, allowing the residents to enjoy each other’s company, as well as coffee and lunch at The Keel Row. The pub also plays host to a number of charity events, including an annual coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Support. Over the last three years, it has raised more than £20,000 for the organisation. “For me, the satisfaction I get from helping people is worth all the effort, and whenever I am approached with fundraising ideas, I always try to help,” added Sharon. Enterprise regional manager Cliff Ward said: “Sharon does an incredible amount of selfless work, which deserves to be celebrated.”

Team tacticsThe Royal, Penrith Publican Len Guye took over The Royal, Penrith just eight months ago, however by immersing himself into community culture, the pub has gone from strength to strength, and was recently awarded the title of ‘Best Pub in Penrith’. The pub has become a hub for local sports groups, including a pub football team, who’ve had a fantastic season so far, with each of their games covered live on local radio station Eden FM and broadcast across Cumbria. Not content with a winning footie squad, The Royal also plays host to a snooker team, ladies and gents darts team, pool team, domino club and a hockey team! Len says; “I’m delighted that so many local clubs and sports teams call The Royal home. I can’t wait to see what we achieve in the next eight months.”
