“Entangled Lives: A Dialogue Between Descendants

of Master and Slave”

Ann Neel and Pam Smith made a startling discovery while researching their family histories: One of Neel’s ancestors once owned Smith’s great-great grandfather.

They thought their own story began with a phone call in 1991, when Smith contacted Neel for assistance researching her ancestry in Randolph County, Mo. Smith knew that Neel had long experience studying

slave-holding families in the area. It took two years of sharing ideas and resources before they understood that the narrative truly began long ago — and just how directly their histories intersect.

Since then, two women have collaborated to share their story with others. “Entangled Lives” explores the painful and rewarding experience of creating a working relationship

and re-creating a friendship out of this extraordinary personal connection.
