Customer ProfileExco Engineering is a world leader in the design and development of large high pressure die cast tooling, serving powertrain, body and structural component customers globally. Located 30 minutes from Toronto, Canada, Exco Engineering is part of publicly traded Exco Technologies (TSX:XTC). Exco Engineering operates out of a 130,000 ft2 facility equipped with modern machine tools. The on-site foundry includes a state-of-the-art 4000 ton high pressure die cast machine with Fanuc robotics and three furnaces to enable delivery of both aluminium and magnesium alloys

The ChallengeErica Reyes is the Exco Engineering IT Director. “Prior to Unitrends, we were using LTO tape. The full backups of our main file would take over a week to complete. In order to backup all of our servers in a timely manner we needed to find a better solution – one also where our terabytes of data could be deduplicated to reduce both backup time and meet our storage needs. We also have a very lean IT department of three staff. We do not have the human bandwidth to dedicate a resource full time to backup administration, so our backups have to be rock solid.”

The issue of SOX (Sarbanes - Oxley) compliance was also a factor in prompting Exco Engineering to seek a better data protection solution. In addition to requiring corporate officers to take greater responsibility for the accuracy of financial reports, SOX mandates that organizations understand the risks that may impact the financial reporting process. A proper assessment of this risk should include IT risks resulting from inadequate disaster recovery or business continuity plans. “We are a public-ly-traded company, so we must be SOX compliant.” said Reyes.

The SolutionExco selected two Unitrends Recovery appliances -the 933S and the 603, Unitrends Forever Cloud for archiving data and Disaster-Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS). Reyes continues “The legacy equipment that I inherited was not standardized and required that we get a solution that could handle all sorts of different backup types (Exchange, VMWare, Hyper-V, SQL, NAS, etc.). Unitrends is able to handle all of our backup requirements with ease. The idea of being able to restore directly to the appliance itself to reduce downtime while you configure a new piece of hardware was also a big draw.”

The ResultsWhen asked about a time that the Unitrends solution was critically important, Reyes related, “We got a very bad crypto virus that spread to our main file server. We had to restore 3TB+ of data and over 2 million files. With our 933S appliance, we were able to restore the files within 18 hours. If we still had the LTO backups, this same restore would have taken over a week to perform. Our team was incredibly thankful that we had purchased the Unitrends 6 months prior to this event.”

Reyes was asked to explain their decision to use Cloud. “We are using Unitrends Cloud for offsite backups. As a publicly-traded Canadian company, data sovereignty is of utmost importance to us. Unitrends provides us with a Canadian Datacenter for us to store our encrypted data - this was a huge deciding factor. The Unitrends Cloud is a very cost-effective solution and also incredibly easy to implement. The Unitrends implemen-tation team helped us throughout the setup process.”
