HAVE YOU MET:

Joslin Kershaw

Joslin Kershaw, a young resident of High Street,

Kensington, is about to embark on an

adventure not too many 13 year olds get a

chance at. A student at Norwood Morialta

High School, Jos has just signed up for the

‘World Challenge’ which takes groups of kids to

remote destinations to work with and

experience other cultures. Jos heads off for a

month in November 2015 to Cambodia and

Vietnam to live with a local family and assist

with building a community school. She will

also have the opportunity to do some trekking.

In preparation, Jos has to practice walking with

a heavy back pack for extended periods of

time. If you see her trudging around the

streets of Kensington in the next year or so

with a giant pack on her back give her a wave

of encouragement. Continued over….

GATE DECORATION

Start thinking about your gate decoration for the month of October – the

theme is history which can be interpreted in any way you like.

Sold and safe! An important icon of Kensington’s 175 years of settlement is

now safe from demolition.

HAVE YOU MET:

Joslin Kershaw

Continued from cover….

Jos has to raise $5,900 in funds to go

to the Challenge. As part of her

fund raising efforts she has been

collecting bottles and cans to

recycle. She has calculated she

needs 59,000 bottles. This money

covers the cost of the trip and the

remainder goes to the community

she spends time with in Cambodia.

Jos and her family moved to

Kensington from Rostrevor in April

this year. They all enjoy living

within the Kensington community

greatly. In Jos’s own words:

Kensington is………..a very nice area.

I live here because….I love the

location, close to Norwood.

My favourite places are…..Bali, my

bedroom and our shack at Bow Hill.

I’m at my most relaxed when….I’m

playing a game of netball, sleeping,

reading or watching TV.

I can’t say no to….a game of netball.

Please help Jos get to the World

Challenge by donating any cans or

bottles that you would normally just

put into your yellow bin. Just give

her a call or text on 0451 308 157

and she will swing by (probably with

her back pack on) to collect.

The 143 year old cork tree 296 The Parade, Norwood

SHOPS VS TREES

Recently NPSP Council’s DAP denied Coles application to extend and develop their shopping complex out into the

existing car park in Norwood. The Council’s DAP refused approval for the application on the grounds of loss of eight

regulated trees which included the Cork Tree, insufficient car parking and the poor relationship with Edward Street.

Coles has since appealed this decision and after a recent Conciliation Conference amended plans are currently being

analysed by Council staff prior to the next DAP meeting on 18 August 2014. The amended application includes

retention of the Cork Tree and one significant Red Gum. We will keep you posted on developments.

296 THE PARADE KENSINGTON

We all know and drive past the wedge shaped building on the corner of Phillips Street and The Parade. An impressive

two storey brick building 296 The Parade has been a dominant feature of the Kensington streetscape since the early

20th century.

The first single story section was constructed in 1900 for Amos Clarke, a cabinetmaker. The second storey, added in

1922, was enlarged for new owner William Stratton, a furniture dealer. Charles Glen became the occupier of the

property in 1941, and the owner from 1948. He and his wife Dorothy established a well-known dry cleaning business

there (“Glen’s Dry Cleaners”), which was known for its popular drive through service.

In 1956, Mr and Mrs Glen undertook extensive improvements, when the council building book notes that they were

granted approval for “alterations and additions” worth a substantial 800 pounds. In the 21st century, the building

continued to be utilised as a dry cleaning business, by Karl Chehade.

296 The Parade has undergone many modifications and represents the changing nature of Kensington Village and its

history as it moved into the 20th century where arterial roads such as the Parade became essential for commercial

development. Denise Schumann, Cultural Heritage Advisor, City of Norwood, Payneham and St Peters.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS FORUM

In May the KRA combined with other NPSP resident associations to run a forum designed to encourage and inform

residents on becoming an elected member of Council. Former State Minister Greg Crafter, Councillor Sue Whitington

(from West Norwood/Kent Town Ward) and Mayor Kirsten Alexander (from the City of Charles Sturt) each spoke with

experience and passion on the difference that engaged and passionate local government representatives can make to a

local community.

Given the success and interest from this evening, KRA is now planning a Southern Forum in which all local candidates in

the Kensington Ward and West Norwood/Kent Town Ward will be invited to speak and answer questions from the

community. All NPSP candidates for Mayor will also be invited to attend.

Please join us at 7.30pm on Monday 13th October, at St Matthews Hall, Bridge Street Kensington. Meet and have

supper with your local candidates and make your vote count in the best interests of Kensington.

Thanks to those residents who expressed their interest in setting up a

Garage Sale for this year. However, unfortunately we did not receive

enough expressions of interest to make this event viable for 2014. It

seems we have all had to park our cars and bikes in our garages out of the

rain this winter we’ve not had the room to collect our wares and pre-

loved treasures in readiness for our annual day of garage sales this year.

Panic not! Rest assured the event will be definitely occurring in 2015

which will give everyone time to compile, corral, convene, convoke,

collate, concentrate and just simply collect their booty in readiness for a

bunta Day of Garage Sales next year.
