CONGRATS!

W E L C O M E A N D

I'm not going to lie, it is a little odd to be writing a welcometo students I will never actually meet. Though, I must say that Ifeel like I've already met you. Being a part of the incomingfreshman class, you will certainly feel any or all of these emotionsat one point: excitement, fear, prepared, unprepared, nervous. I was in your same shoes four years ago. Being the onlystudent from my middle school attending Bellarmine, I felt mostlyanxious. But it all works out, trust me. Everyone's Bellarminestory has a beginning, middle and end. My ending happens to betapping frantically on an iPad in an attempt to inspire a bunch ofeighth graders. Yours will be a juxtaposition of your beginning aswell, and one of yours will end the same way mine is; writing towelcome the class of 2024. Bells, my advice to you is this: soak it all in. Life is too short towaste high school only worrying about the tests you haveapproaching in the next week. Enjoy Bellarmine - join a club, tryout for a sports team, audition for a musical, take a ceramicsclass, spend time in Mr. Adams' garden, attend a Kairos retreat, give back to the community, and do it all in a spirit of gratitude. You are the lucky few, whether you know it or not. Four years from now when you walk across the Liccardobalcony gripping your diploma, you will look out into the audienceand see your brothers. You will see the men you have studiedwith, sweated with, and prayed with for four years. And believeme when I say that there are no other faces in the world youwould rather see. Congratulations and welcome from myself and the entirestudent body. AMDG.

WHAT DO YOU NEEDTO KNOW ABOUTPROFICIENCY EXAMS?

SOME THINGS TOTHINK ABOUT

Math tests everyone

Every student willbe tested forplacement inMathematics, whether he wants

an advanced Math course or not.ALEKS is taken at home betweenApril 5th and May 9th.

All advancedcourses requireproficiency exams

For students whowant to pursuemore advancedcourses in otherareas, Proficiency

You should consider taking a proficiency exam if you think youmay be prepared to take on an advanced level in a particularsubject area. Even if you do qualify for the advanced course, youare not obligated to take it. In fact, if you place into multipleadvanced courses, you should be wary of taking more than twoas the adjustment to high school alone and college preparatorycoursework is significant.

Although there are seven periods in our schedule, you do notneed to fill every one. While many students find that having afree period is quite helpful in getting homework started, ormeeting with a teacher or other students, it is important to notethat fulfilling Bellarmine’s graduation requirements ordinarilymeans at least one semester with seven courses. Many studentsfind that freshman year, as opposed to later years, is a goodtime to take a seventh class. Another option is to take summerschool at some point. For example, taking Foundations the summer before freshman year is a good way to help retain afree period later on.

NOTE: Mandarin as a language choice for non-heritage speakersis extremely demanding and challenging, requiring additionaltime to be successful. The additional task of learning charactersmay require significant application of time and energy.

Exams are also offered inEnglish, Modern and ClassicalLanguages, and Science.Proficiency in the subject mustbe shown for placement in ahigher-level course. Please notethat if you select a higher-levelcourse, you are making acommitment to attend the exam.

Notifications &Conflicts

Students taking aProficiency Examwill be notified oftheir placementby email in mid-

May. If you have anunavoidable conflict with anyof the test dates, please [email protected] about thepossibility of rescheduling.

MathematicsBellarmine uses ALEKS, an online, adaptive math assessment tool, to measure math proficiency of incomingfreshmen and place them into the Bellarmine math curriculum. We allow each student up to three attemptsto complete his assigned ALEKS exam, at his convenience, during an assessment period that opens at 8am onTuesday, April 5th and closes at 11pm on Monday, May 9th. We will use the highest score among hisattempts for placement. The student will have the option to practice with ALEKS between assessmentattempts. All exams are taken at home. The objective is to offer each student ample opportunity todemonstrate his level of math knowledge in order to achieve the most accurate placement.

Math course selection must be done through the online course request (OCR) system. Howeverinformation about requesting math courses, and information about the math testing andplacement process, can be found on the Math Placement web page.

All incoming freshmen must take an ALEKS math exam, even those who wish to take Algebra 1.

Please go to bcp.org/bell2020 and click on "Math Placement" in the Next Steps – RequestCourses section.

After you have submitted your online course request (OCR) information, and the OCR deadlinehas passed, the Math Placement Team will contact you via email to communicate which ALEKSproficiency exam you will be taking, and provide your ALEKS login information.

Please do not contact the Admissions Office or Math Department until you have received theaforementioned email. If for some reason you do not receive the email by Monday, April 4th,please contact the Math Placement Team at [email protected].
