U.S. Olympians Margie Engle and Laura Kraut rounded out the top three, with Engle aboard Indigo in second, and Kraut riding Nouvelle third. Ana Catalina Harris Cruz (MEX) set the course for 44 horse and rider combinations Saturday night at the Palm Beach International Equ- estrian Center (PBIEC). The track yielded eight horses for the jump-off, which featured Olympians and veteran show jumpers, alongside some top up-and-comers. Andrew Ramsay (USA) and The Doodle Group’s Cocq a Doodle set things off over the short course, finishing with four faults in 40.55 seconds to eventually place seventh. Mavis Spencer (USA) jumped her first “Saturday Night Lights” grand prix riding Mike Collins’ Corne- tiero, and dropped two rails in 46.43 seconds to place eighth. Gonzalez was next to go, completing the first double clear round in 40.36 seconds for the win aboard Chacna. Kara Chad (CAN) and Torrey Pines Stable’s Gin Tonic vd Haagakkers, cleared the track in 44.13 seconds to place fo- urth. Laura Kraut and the Evita Group’s Nouvelle followed with the third place time of 41.35 seconds. Beezie Madden (USA) had the time in 40.12 seconds on Abigail Wexner’s Breitling LS, but dropped the front rail of the final oxer to end sixth. Engle went next, racing through the timers in 41.02 seconds riding Griese, Garber, Hidden Creek, and Gladewinds’ Indigo to land the second place prize. Last to go, Daniel Coyle (IRL) knocked one rail with Ariel and Susan Grange’s Cita, but clocked the fastest round of the night in 39.49 seconds to secure fifth place honors. “The last year has been really good. She learned a lot, and she improved a lot,” Gonza- lez said of the ten-year-old Hanoverian mare (Chacco-Blue x Narew XX). “Now I think she is ready to really compete at this level. She has never shown here, and she has never shown in a night class in an open place like this. I really wanted her to go tonight to be ready for the coming weeks.” Gonzalez last competed at the Winter Equestrian Festival in 2011, and this was his first grand prix win at PBIEC. The Hollow Creek Farm Under 25 Grand Prix Series hosted its second event of the circuit with back-to-back wins for 20-year-old Lillie Keenan of New York, NY, aboard Chansonette Farm LLC’s Be Gentle during WEF 2. Keenan and the 11-year- old Dutch Warmblood mare (Ticallux Verte x Gentleman) topped Saturday’s $10,000 Welcome speed class and returned to take victory in Sunday’s $25,000 Grand Prix jump-off. The $25,000 Hollow Creek Farm Under 25 Grand Prix saw 65 entries Sunday morning in the International Arena at PBIEC. Ana Catalina Harris Cruz (MEX) set a challenging test for the young competitors, which saw five clear rounds advance to the jump-off. Taylor Land (USA) was first to return over the short course, with a clear track in 43.56 seconds that eventually placed fourth riding Jay Land’s For Edition. Lucas Porter (USA) went next, jumping the second place time of 40.74 seconds aboard Sleepy P Ranch LLC’s Diamonte Darco. Kerry McCahill (USA) and Cadensky followed with the third place time of 43.43 seconds. Keenan then jumped the winning round in 39.85 seconds aboard Be Gentle. Last to go, Jennifer Gates (USA) incurred eight faults in 42.74 seconds to finish fifth. “I have a lot of confidence in my horse,” Keenan said following her win. “I have had her for over a year now and I have jumped her in some bigger classes, so we have experience together. She is lightning fast against the clock. I would say out of all my horses, she is the most straightforward and trustworthy. The feeling that she gives you is that you could really point her to the eye of a needle. Some of the angles that you can point her at for a jump are really remarkable.” Keenan detailed her jump-off, explaining that her position to go fourth out of five was an advantage. “I got to see Lucas go and I think really where I made up time was on the turns,” Keenan said. “I have experience going very fast on my horse. That was something that I tried to fine tune throughout the year, and I feel like now it’s really coming together.” Lucas Porter (19), of Wellington, FL, took the reins on Diamonte Darco in 2016 after the mare showed with his older brother Wilton for two seasons. The 12-year-old Great Britain Sport Horse (by Unbelievable Darco) has jumped bigger tracks and is an experienced mount for her young rider. “She’s a super competitive horse,” Porter stated. “Even though she has jumped big- ger, our team feels that she jumps the best at this height. These classes are usually really quick, and she has now learned how to go fast against the clock, so she is super useful. It is the perfect fit for these U25 classes.” McCahill (20), of Windermere, FL, just began showing Cadensky two weeks ago. She bought the 14-year-old Oldenburg stallion (Cornet Obolensky x Carthago Z) late in November and is getting to know the mount through the Under 25 classes. “I was just trying to be smooth and give him a good ride,” she noted. “I really wasn’t sure how it was going to go, but he’s incredible. I am very lucky to have him.” McCahill first showed in the Under 25 Series in 2016 and has made it her goal to qualify for this year’s $50,000 Hollow Creek Farm Under 25 Grand Prix Final, which the top 30 riders in the point standings will be invited to contest on Sunday, April 2. The series, presented by The Dutta Corp. in association with Guido Klatte, has been expanded to ten events offering a total of $215,000 in prize money for the 2017 season. Developed as a bridge to the international level of grand prix competiti- on, the Series gives athletes, both human and equine, an opportunity to compete under a myriad of conditions, including jumping on grass, under the lights at night, and in team competition; all important elements that competitors will face as their international careers progress. n the equine athlete, overuse is a significant cause of a variety of lameness problems. Over time, the wear and tear of daily use or

“use trauma,” exerts abnormal forces on a horse’s joints and disrupts the natural cycle of “wear and repair.” Once the natural balance of a joint is disrupted, the joint is susceptible to non-infectious degenerative joint disease (DJD). Equine DJD (also commonly referred to as osteoarthritis, or OA) is specifically defined as “a group of disorders characterized by a common end-stage in which progressive deterioration of the articular cartilage is accompanied by changes in bone and soft tissues of the joint.”1

In horses with DJD, changes occur within the joint that cause lameness which may become noticeable by an owner, rider, trainer, or veterinarian. A comprehensive veterinary physical and lameness exam is always recommended for an appropriate diagnosis of any cause of lameness. If a diagnosis of DJD is confirmed, your veterinarian may choose to treat your horse with one or more of four therapeutic categories of FDA approved products: PSGAG, Sodium Hyaluronate/HA, Corticosteroids, and NSAIDs. FDA approved products within these categories of treatment are routinely used in the management of lameness associated with degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis. (Note: FDA approved products are those products that are rigorously tested for safety and efficacy through required clinical studies.)

Therapeutic Categories for DJD• Polysulfated glycosaminoglycan

(PSGAG)

- DIMINISHES the destructive processes of degenerative joint disease

- REVERSES the processes which result in the loss of cartilage components

- IMPROVES overall joint function and associated lameness

• Sodium hyaluronate or Hyaluronic Acid (HA) products

• Corticosteroids

• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

Many other products marketed and sold are not supported by sound scientific research or manufactured under strict FDA guidelines. Please consult your veterinarian for further information on treatment of lameness associated with DJD, and ask which FDA approved products may be most appropriate for your horse.

INDICATIONSFor the intramuscular treatment of non-infectious degenerative and/or traumatic joint dysfunction and associated lameness of the carpal and hock joints in horses.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATIONThere are no known contraindications to the use of intramuscular Adequan® i.m. brand Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan in horses. Studies have not been conducted to establish safety in breeding horses. WARNING: Do not use in horses intended for human consumption. Not for use in humans. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children. CAUTION: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

“We are here for the whole season, so it is definitely a very nice way to start, and hopefully we can keep it up for the rest of the season,” he stated.

Following the WEF circuit, Chacna may have a trip to the FEI World Cup Finals in her future, as Gonzalez is currently leading the West Coast standin-gs and qualified to compete in April.

For Engle, Saturday night was a great result with longtime partner Indigo, a 17-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding by Indoctro.

“He doesn’t know he’s any older,” Engle remarked. “He acts younger than most of my young horses. He gave it a shot (in the jump-off), and I went as fast as I could at the beginning. I may have gone a little wide to the last fence, but he is always ready to go. He is very enthu-siastic, and he always wants to go forward. He is still young at heart.”

Indigo jumped the first two weeks at WEF and will now have a few weeks off. Engle said, “He doesn’t owe me anything. He probably won’t show a lot the rest of the season. It gets bigger and big-ger as it goes on, and now that he’s older I pick my spots with him. He’s been a great horse for me.”

Kraut was going for the win Saturday night, but was happy with her finish aboard Nouvelle to start the circuit. This was the first week jumping since the beginning of November for the 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare (Solitair x Contango).

Commenting on her jump-off, Kraut detailed, “I knew Enrique was fast. I went as fast as I could. I just messed up that last turn; I started to turn too early. She made a heroic effort over that jump to not knock it down, because I did everything in my power to knock it down. I think I probably lost it there.”

ULTIMA FIT TIP #3 Rest: In addition to getting enough sleep, it is important to take some rest days. Working out too much for too long can lead to overtraining syndrome. By consulting a professional, your training is managed both during the workout and to recover.

EQUILINE: What are your riding goals for WEF 2017? TARA: My goals are to continue developing my small group of horses and grow as much as I can as a rider. I'm grateful that you can watch so many great horse and rider combinations here and learn in and out of the show ring.

EQUILINE: Which of your horses are you most excited about this season?

TARA: Boy Blue who I’ve been riding since he was a 6 y/o, we know each other well and have a great partnership. Also Del Mar, he has a bright future, always want to jump clear if I just stay out of his way .

EQUILINE: What is your favorite Equiline product? TARA: It's hard to pick just one Equiline product but my Hayley X-Cool Evo show coat. The great classic yet modern it, plus custom options, give you all the style without ever having to compromise on function.

It’s time you considered moving your business to Palm Beach County, one of the most globally competitive business climates: Low taxes, affordable commercial and residential real estate, easy access to three international airports, in a state with no personal income tax. The Business Development Board of Palm Beach County can help with the services, resources, knowledge, and connections you need.

To say grooms are an instrumental part to the success and welfare of the horses is an understatement. They feed the horses well before sunrise, ice their legs after a tough class, and tuck them in at night with a flake of hay and water. Head groom and barn manager extraordinaire, Juan Carlos Gudino, is no stranger to these tasks. Having worked for Joe Fargis for an impressive 17 years, Gudino loves his job and holds himself to the highest standards. While Gudino was born and raised in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, he has lived in the United States for 25 years and also been employed by Jerry Robertson, Bernardo Mendoza and Peter Wylde.

Gudino’s talent and ability has not gone unnoticed. Over the years, his horses have regularly won ‘best turned-out horse’ awards at events like the Hampton Classic and the Upperville Colt & Horse Show. He fondly recalls a horse show in 2007 at Beacon Hill Farm when the stars aligned for him. Tracey Weinberg, who trains with Fargis and Gudino cared for her horses, won the Junior/Amateur class aboard Cromwell and was champion with Larone; Joe Fargis won the Grand Prix with Edgar 12; and Gudino won a Mercedes in a raffle! Gudino now calls Middle-burg, Virginia, home and loves to greet clients and people shipping in for lessons with a smile and the occasional wisecrack.

HERE’S A CLOSER LOOK AT JUAN CARLOS GUDINO:

How did you first get involved with horses? Gudino: It’s the first job I got when I arrived here in the United States. It’s something I like to do. In Mexico, I was working on the farm and we always had horses around there.

What do you like best about working for Joe Fargis? Gudino: He’s such a nice guy and really fair. The most important thing, he treats people the way they’re supposed to be treated.

Can you talk about any horses that have been really special to you? Gudino: Oh, I definitely have a couple. Edgar 12, Joe used to ride that horse. He won a lot. Diams III, Joe rode her and Mary B. Schwab owned her. She was small and fast. And Larone with Tracey Weinberg. Those three were amazing horses. Really amazing. Each of those horses listened to me. We got along really well. They won a lot and were so easy to work with.

What’s your favorite part about being a groom? Gudino: The best part about being a groom is having nice relationships with the horses. They know you well. I just love it. I like knowing exactly what to do and when you work for somebody that rea-lly appreciates what you do, you work to be better and better.

What do you like about being in Wellington for the winter?Gudino: I love the weather. It’s so nice down here and I get to see all my friends. I also like to be around horse shows and see the horses jumping. Especially the big night classes.

When you’re not working with horses, what can we find you doing? Gudino: I love spending time with my daughter when I can. I also enjoy hiking.

Keenan, who has been competing and training in Europe with Olympian Cian O’Connor of Ireland, enjoys the experience that the Series offers.

“I am very grateful that they offer this division because it is a great stepping-stone,” she noted. “ I haven’t been in the show ring since November, so it is a big confidence boost to start the circuit with two events like this.

“I am very fortunate to have had the experience of competing in America throughout my junior divisions, going to Young Riders and making the transition to competing in Europe and showing against the pros,” Keenan continued. “Having the experience of myself jumping on a Nations’ Cup team, you need to learn how to deal with pressure and how to work in different environments, so I think we are very lucky that Hollow Creek Farm offers that for us here.”

Life After the Olympics: Beezie Madden

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING IN RIO?Madden: My favorite part about being in Rio was winning the team silver medal.

Is it more or less nerve-wracking being there to support your team compared to riding in the Olympics? Madden: I’d say it was more nerve-wracking to watch. It’s easier once you’re on the horse and doing something.

How is Cortes ‘C’’s recovery going?Madden: Cortes is doing pretty well. He’s here [in Wellington], but he’s not in work. He’s still on vacation.

Has any one horse really stepped up to fill his shoes?Madden: I can’t really say that yet. Those are big shoes to fill. Breitling LS is off to a good start this year. I have a young horse, [that is] nine now, Coach, that is going to start doing the Grand Prixs this year. I’m excited about Coach. He has all the scope, like Cortes.

What are your plans for the remainder of the circuit here in Wellington?Madden: My plans are to try to climb up the computer list in the rankings a little bit. I’d like to get some good Grand Prix results out of Breitling and Coach. I’d also like to develop some young horses too.

What’s the most exciting thing, not horse-related, that has happened to you since the Olympics? Madden: We went on vacation in Hawaii! We haven’t gone on vacation in a while so that was exciting.

Stay tuned and read next week’s WEF Weekly Wire to discover what another U.S. Olympic Team Member has been up to since the Games.

Beezie Madden is another member of the U.S. team at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics that was also part of the gold medal-winning team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2004 Athens

Olympics (along with McLain Ward). She also has an individual bronze medal to her name from the Beijing Olympics. Known for her ability to deliver results under pressure, Madden has proven

over and over, on a multitude of horses, why she is one of the best. Her Rio Olympic mount, Cortes ‘C’, owned by Abigail Wexner, is also highly decorated. The 15-year-old Belgian gelding

by Randel Z has been ridden by Madden since 2011 and the pair has won their fair share of high profile classes. Cortes ‘C’ earned the ‘Best Horse’ title at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian

Games, a testament to his dependability. Unfortunately, the day before the final team round, Cortes ‘C’ injured a tendon and Madden made the heartbreaking decision to withdraw. We

caught up with Madden to discuss Rio and what the future holds for her. Sara Cook

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME ON MONDAYS?

Margie Engle: “Play poker.”

Tamara Provost: “I went out on a yacht last Monday!”

Beezie Madden: “I go to the gym. It depends. A lot of the time we have little loose ends to tie up to get ready for the next week. We try to take a little time off.”

Laura Chapot: “Monday is a normal riding day for me, because it’s one of the nicest days to ride on the show grounds. It’s very quiet. Mornings are pretty much dedicated to the barn and riding. In the afternoons, I try to get some errands done and paperwork that kind of accumulates during the week.”
