Enrichment Programme

2017 - 2018

Welcome & GuidanceI am delighted to introduce this year’s enrichment programme. You will find in this booklet a wealth of diverse, engaging activities for all ages and interests. The impact that an active involvement in enrichment can have on academic attainment should not be underestimated. Many of the skills developed through enrichment activities are

directly transferable to the academic arena. These include problem-solving, working as a team and performing under pressure in front of an audience. The necessary self-discipline and commitment that is needed for success in these areas is also mirrored in the classroom. Wherever a child’s interests lie, this enrichment programme is designed to give each individual the opportunity to discover their talents and develop them further.

We believe that the enrichment programme is an integral part of the education that our pupils experience at Ipswich High School and that it is taking part in these activities outside the classroom that allows them to become confident, flexible and resilient young adults, ready to take on future challenges. All of the activities add value, enrich knowledge and tap into unknown potential - equipping them with the skills and values needed to meet the challenges of a changing society and to provide the best possible educational foundation for life.

If you have any questions or feedback about our enrichment programme, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Senior School GuidanceIn the majority of cases, pupils will choose an activity for one term. pupils in the Senior School should balance their enrichment timetable with three or four study sessions per week. As pupils prepare for their GCSEs and A Levels, they may need to allow more sessions for study.

Pupils in Year 9 and above are encouraged to build their leadership experience through volunteering with a Prep School activity. They can choose one long enrichment activity in which to assist the Prep School enrichment programme. Volunteering is part of the Duke of Edinburgh requirements and assisting with a Prep School activity could contribute.

Prep School GuidanceIn the Prep School, the following guidance applies:

Years 1 to 3 should choose an enrichment activity from 12.50 - 13.30 twice a week and can opt to attend an afternoon enrichment from 15.45 - 16.15 twice a week should they wish.

Years 4 to 6 should choose an enrichment activity from 12.50 - 13.30 two to three times a week, and an enrichment activity every day from 15.45 - 16.15, except Friday.

Please refer to your Year group/Prep School timetable when making your choices and read the descriptions found in this booklet to check if this activity is for you.

Completion of choicesPlease complete the enrichment choices timetable found in your welcome pack and online and return to the Senior School Reception or Registrar.

Oversubscription and under subscriptionIf a club is oversubscribed, puils may need to undertake a second choice. If a club is under-subscribed, the activity may not run and pupils may need to undertake a second choice.

Based within the Art department, Art scholars will have full access to the materials, facilities and expertise needed to guide them and develop their personal investigations. Older students will have the opportunity to mentor and support the younger scholars whilst the younger students have the opportunity to experience peer mentoring. The scholars will be encouraged to enter relevant competitions and to initiate exhibition opportunities.

Big Bang ChallengeThe Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition aims to recognise and reward young people’s achievements in all areas of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and provide them with the opportunity to build their skills and confidence in project-based work.

Chess Club Come and play chess with your friends.

‘Don’t lose the plot’ A chance for both support and extension in the surprisingly cross-curricular area of Graphwork. Using examples from ‘real life’ and making connections with many curriculum areas, you can explore and practise with different types of graph. If you’ve ever struggled with where to draw the line, or wondered how many different shapes of graph there might be, come to ‘Don’t lose the plot!’ for a self-paced exploration of the graphical world.

Greek Mythology We will explore the most exciting Greek myths about powerful gods and beautiful goddesses, valiant young women (like Atalanta), incredible heroes (e.g. Heracles and his labours, Theseus and the Minotaur, Odysseus and his wondrous travels) and humans of extraordinary skill and talent (like Daedalus and his inspired, if somewhat tragic, son Icarus).

History Matters History is about people. Our beliefs and actions, our cultures and ways of living, our ways of making sense of ourselves are all shaped by our history. If we want to fully understand ourselves now we must think about history. A root of the word ‘history’ is the Latin word historia, which can mean ‘finding’ out. At ‘History Matters’ you can find out about significant events that have shaped the modern world and the impact that they continue to have on the world in which you are growing up. Debate is the essence of history. Come along and discuss your views of the past and present.

Medical Society The Society is particularly appropriate for pupils in Years 10 to 13 who are seriously considering a career in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy or any medically related field of work. Sessions will include preparation for the UKCAT and BMAT examinations, discussion of medically related news items, debates on ethical issues and interview practice. There may also be talks from past students or Health Care professionals who will share their experiences.

Varsity Maths A maths club to extend and challenge those that love maths. We will explore more wide-ranging maths topics not included in the normal curriculum.

EPQExtended Project Qualification (EPQ), Sixth FormThe Extended Project Qualification provides an opportunity for students to extend their abilities beyond their A Level specifications, developing skills in independent research and project management. It is awarded UCAS points worth half an A Level. Students carry out research on a topic that they have chosen and that is not covered by their other qualifications. They use this research to produce a written report and, in the case of practical projects, an artefact. There are taught skills and a supervisor to guide candidates through the process but the supervisor does not guide the content of the project. You must attend the Taught Skills enrichment session and you will be allocated a supervisor session once you have chosen your area of enquiry. To complete the EPQ you will need to have strong organisational skills in order to balance the workload with your A Level subjects.

Year 13 students should only opt for the Extended Project Qualification if they have completed the Initial Planning in Year 12 and have already made progress with their preliminary research.

Higher Project Qualification (HPQ)The Higher Project Qualification offers pupils the opportunity to investigate a topic of their choice, record their research and produce a written report or artefact. Taught elements will develop skills to help girls complete the project successfully. These include research skills, critical analysis and project management. In addition to attending the taught skills sessions, you will be allocated a supervisor to guide you through the process and your meetings with your supervisor will take place in other allocated enrichment times. The qualification is equivalent to half a GCSE and will enhance work in other areas of the curriculum. It will be delivered over two years and you will need to commit to this in your enrichment choices.

EPQ Taught Skills (Year 13 Only) Year 13 students should only opt for the Extended Project Qualification if they have completed the Initial Planning in Year 12 and have already made progress with their preliminary research. You must attend the Taught Skills enrichment session and you will be allocated one of the supervisor sessions.

EPQ Taught Skills (Year 12 Only) The Extended Project Qualification provides an opportunity for students to extend their abilities beyond their A level specifications, developing skills in independent research and project management. It is awarded UCAS points worth half an A Level and is very positively received by Universities. Students carry out research on a topic that they have chosen, which is not covered by their other qualifications. This option is highly recommended to all Year 12 students.

Performing Arts

Digital Theatre PlusIf you are interested in the theatre and enjoy watching first-class live productions, without having to travel all the way to London or Stratford, then the Digital Theatre Club is for you. We have teamed up with Digital Theatre to access a range of award-winning, acclaimed theatre performances, which include: “All My Sons,” “Far From the Madding Crowd,” “Much Ado About Nothing,” “King Lear,” “A Doll’s House” and “Into the Woods.” One of the things that is so nice about watching these plays in this way is that we are able to pause the action and discuss the plot/characters/themes, thus making great theatre accessible to all.

This year we are extending our repertoire and including other great literary works in film. As well as being thoroughly entertaining, coming along to this club will really broaden your literary horizons.

Drama Club (Year 7)As well as having the opportunity to take part in performance projects, pupils in year 7 can choose to come to our weekly drama club. Using one short enrichment session, we enjoy drama games, developing new skills and techniques, and creating short performances. The emphasis is on having fun and working creatively in response to a wide variety of tasks and stimuli.

‘Beauty and the Beast’For those who have been successful in our school production auditions, enrichment sessions are used for the majority of rehearsals. A schedule will give the focus for each rehearsal, and the rest of the cast will be involved in practising what has already been set. As we get closer to the performance date, there will be a few longer sessions (until 6pm), two full-day weekend rehearsals and two days off timetable in the last few weeks; these dates will be on the schedule that will be sent out in the autumn term. It is expected that cast members attend every rehearsal. The performance dates are 6th, 7th, 8th February2018, so

the commitment lasts for 3 half-terms. Hayworth Players (Years 7 to 13)

The first project for the Hayworth Players this year is our abridged version of Shakespeare’s ‘The Comedy of Errors’. For those who have been successful in our Shakespeare Schools Festival auditions, we will have an intensive rehearsal period that leads up to our performance on 14th November 2017; our technical and dress rehearsals will take place in the morning, and the performances will start at 7pm; the evening will contain performances by Saxmundham Free School and Sidegate Primary School. There is also a company workshop on 27th September at Dance East (13:30 – 16:00) that all cast members must attend. In order to ensure we have a high quality performance to take to this professional theatre environment, there will be at least one full-day weekend rehearsal and one day off-timetable in school. As we move onto the next project, a new cast will be selected, by audition.

Hayworth Production and Technical Team (Years 7-13) You are welcome to come and join our team of designers and technicians who help provide lighting, sound, set, props, costume, make-up, marketing and front-of-house for school performance events. We will teach you how to use the school equipment, and also provide opportunities for technicians to work in the professional theatre environment as part of one of our performance projects, such as the Shakespeare Schools Festival. We hold one group session each week, but you will also have some work to complete in preparation for each production, and may need to attend rehearsals and performances.
