Careers Development ProgrammeHelping you find your way in the world of workWe are passionate about preparing students for their futures, whatever their ambition, and our Careers Development Programme enhances the opportunities for our students to progress to university, apprenticeships or directly into employment.

In a hugely competitive environment, whether straight from college or via University, you will need to develop your employability skills to be able to succeed. Quite often employers tell us it is not only important to succeed academically but also to have personal skills such as flexibility, reliability, good communication skills, team working and initiative. Our programme will help you to develop these qualities through a variety of initiatives.

We have established contacts with a multitude of employers from all of the main employment sectors. Our students can opt to take part in placements within an industry or sector that may interest them. In return, students will need to demonstrate commitment, produce a supporting statement and attend an interview at the prospective placement.

We also encourage our students to get involved in volunteering, which could include fundraising and being a member of our Student Association. Our students have the option of joining the National Citizen Service programme, which helps young people build skills for work and life while taking on exciting challenges, making new friends and contributing to their community.

Work Related Learning is an important part of our Career Development Programme. You will see that there are many forms of Work Related Learning:

Complementing your academic journey with

practical life skillsEN Prospectus 2017 / Your route to an outstanding future/27

Page 29: ENProspectus2017_05-09-16_Final_Singles_Online

We encourage and support students to seek relevant Work Related Learning during their time at the College so that they develop their employability skills and make informed decisions about their next steps after sixth form.

The Professional Mentoring Scheme provides individual support from someone who already works in a profession or industry that a student may be interested in joining.

Our industry visits involve a wide range of sectors from energy and engineering, to the food and drink industry.

Many of our students get involved in project work with local businesses and other

organisations. This is not only great for their CVs but gives them an opportunity to work to a real brief, liaising with the ‘customer’.

We help students plan for possible progression routes, with an annual Careers Fair, many talks and workshops from visiting speakers, a HE progression information evening and several enterprise events.

Every year we organise an Apprenticeship Information event as an increasing number of our students and their parents are interested in finding out more about this progression pathway.

Elected annually, each student within the Association takes up a role such as Treasurer and Communications Officer.

The ExtENd ProgrammeThe ExtENd programme is for students who are aiming to get into a highly competitive university and typically where the application process includes some form of admissions process. The programme challenges students to think ambitiously about where they see themselves progressing onto after Sixth Form studies.

OxbridgeOxford and Cambridge applications are managed through UCAS but are typically more demanding than other universities. Both place emphasis on a strong personal statement and will include an aptitude admissions test alongside a formal interview.

The emphasis is not on what has been studied as part of A level instead the students are expected to show how they respond to unfamiliar problems and to demonstrate what they have studied outside the formal curriculum. There is also an accelerated UCAS application process requiring completion earlier than other universities.

Russell Group UniversitiesThis is a group of 24 universities (including Oxford and Cambridge) who have a strong research background, are highly regarded globally and offer courses that attract a large number of applications.

Other competitive institutionsIn addition to the Russell Group universities there are other competitive HE institutions that specialise, for example St Martin’s School of Art (within which is the London College of Fashion), Bournemouth University which has an international reputation for marketing and PR courses, UEA with a strong background in creative writing. Students are also increasingly looking to institutions outside the UK including European universities and US Colleges. To enable our students to be fully prepared the ExtENd programme is designed to support students with their applications. Students are placed with a dedicated ExtENd tutor.

The tutors will have a broad specialism in an academic area e.g. Maths, Humanities in order to facilitate the development of subject related discussion.

3D Design is a specialism within the Art and Design team. Students develop skills in design, model making and drawing (both freehand and digital). Following an introductory period students work on personal projects.

The course has a dedicated studio equipped with computers, drawing tables and studio lighting for photographing 3D work. Adjacent to the studio is a well-equipped multi-media workshop for working in metal, wood, plastic, plaster and clay.

Many students have used the course as a stepping stone to degree courses in architecture, product design, engineering, model making, craft and jewellery, gaining entry to some of the most prestigious courses in the country.

The Fine Art programme is exciting and challenging, encouraging experimentation and self-expression in a wide variety of media. Students are offered support through individual feedback and tutorials.

At AS we teach a broad range of skills through a series of projects where you are encouraged to experiment and develop ideas by reviewing and refining your practice through informed research. As a result, you will begin to develop your own individual style.

At A2 you develop a sustained body of work on your chosen personal theme supported by 1000 – 3000 word dissertation.

Graphics is a very diverse subject within the visual arts involving a multitude of art & design disciplines and materials. The emphasis is on experimentation and idea development to satisfy illustration and design briefs. You will gain experience using a range of digital and manual processes with an emphasis on combining both for design realisations. Areas to explore include advertising, branding, illustration, packaging, typography and designs for multi-media.

We use fully up-to-date, industry standard Adobe software.

The course is designed to identify and capitalise on each individual’s particular skills and interests, with a central aim of creating a diverse and energetic studio environment.

Photography in its 176 year history has literally changed the way we see the world. Photography is both art and science. It’s at the cutting edge of technological development and the modern world is impossible to imagine without cameras.

Photography is everywhere and is used in multiple ways, from recording in space to the smallest micro cameras in hospitals. The creative industries generate £76.9 billion annually in the British economy and 5% of all jobs are in this sector.

Digital technologies have sparked a revolution in photography and there has never been a more exciting time to study this subject at East Norfolk. There has been a huge investment in providing new accommodation in Photography including two new computer rooms and darkroom in the Newman building.

TextilesA-level / Edexcel

There is a hands-on practical start to AS covering a broad range of processes to suit complete beginners as well as more experienced.

As the course progresses it gradually becomes more independent with a focus on small group teaching through workshops and 1:1 support; this allows students to develop their own interests and produce personal work in a range of textile outcomes such as fashion garments, interior furnishings and lighting, wall hangings, jewellery and accessories as well as lengths of printed cloth.

Students are offered support through individual feedback and tutorials.

At A-level students pick a focus for their studies around a specific aspect of textile design and put into practice skills learnt at AS to make more ambitious and challenging final pieces. There is a strong focus on progression where students are supported to develop their professional portfolios for use in seeking employment or higher education places.

BTEC Business is a course that when chosen with a good combination of subjects, could open many doors. Most employers and universities want to be assured that potential candidates are able to contextualise information and apply knowledge and theory and you will learn these skills on the course.

Not only will you gain fundamental knowledge of a range of business organisations and the many factors that shape the nature of them operating in an increasingly complex business world, we will teach you how the management of resources can impact on business performance and how marketing, research and planning and the marketing mix are used. You will also learn how successful communication of information throughout a business is critical for the future prosperity of an organisation, as well as developing an understanding of the fundamental concepts that underpin e-business operations.

The aim of Business A-level is to take an all-inclusive approach to the subject in order to demonstrate the inter-related nature of individual topics. You will use business models, theories and techniques to analyse contemporary business issues and situations.

Year 1 Topics:• Marketing• Operations• Human resources• Finance

The focus is on how decisions in these four areas can improve business performance. Developments in digital technology, business ethics and globalisation are covered throughout the topics so students can understand their impact on firms.

The A level includes all of the AS topics but also takes a strategic approach to business. This involves the identification of businesses’ long-term or overall aims and interests and the means of achieving them.

Year 2 Topics:• Analysing the strategic

position of a business• Choosing a strategic

direction• Strategic methods; how to

pursue strategies• Managing strategic change.

Ever wondered why things cost what they do? Ever thought about the choices you make when you buy a product? Ever wondered why there is not enough to go round? Ever wondered why some people are richer than others?

Then all this and more is covered in A-level Economics. Economics tries to understand how we try to match the unlimited wants that humans have with the limited resources the earth has.

Economics explores how we can do this efficiently and fairly. Economics also considers whether we have achieved the right economic solutions to solve that problem.

You will get the chance to debate this and to consider alternative policies and ideas.

Film is the most important art-form of the last 100 years, bringing together people of all nations and providing entertainment and cultural information whilst pushing the boundaries of technology.

At AS, the main focus is Hollywood and British Cinema. You’ll cover the history of film from its origins in 1895 up to the present day, and you’ll make close textual analysis of a number of key films.

At A2, you’ll study ‘varieties of films’ from shorts to feature lengths and from the silent era, to documentaries all the way through to global cinema.

Throughout the course you will also create either a short film or screenplay and an evaluative analysis to compliment your practical work.

These days most films on DVD come with a load of extras: how the film was made, deleted scenes and out-takes.

If you enjoy the extras as well as watching the film then this might be the course for you. We start in the familiar surroundings of Hollywood before venturing beyond to explore world cinema. Learn from the greats and then create your very own film ideas.

You will look at the language of film, how films are constructed, and who the audiences and institutions are who make them. You will get the opportunity to design marketing materials for films and to study films, directors and actors that you are particularly interested in.

The course offers an introduction to media employment and equips you with essential skills that will be necessary across the entire creative media sector.

You will learn how to frame and shoot video footage, script writing, how to plan for a film shoot, how to edit, how to liaise with clients and much more.

You can complete a single block Certificate (equivalent to 1 AS level) or the double block Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent to 1 full A Level) in the first year and then continue to a single or double block in the second year.

You will be expected to purchase a SDHC memory card which will be used to back-up important work. The qualification has a mixture of independent and group work and you will be expected to work equally well in both scenarios. If you envision working in a creative industry, this is the course for you.

There is no denying the importance of media or how much we have come to rely on it.

The new A-level in Media Studies looks holistically at the institutions behind various media platforms and the audiences that consume them.

The way people, places and events are represented will play a large part of the course and you will also focus on different platforms and how they have come to converge alongside the study of media language.

Throughout the course you will be given the opportunity to study music videos, video games, advertising, film marketing, newspapers and news / current affairs programmes.

English Language enables you to develop your interest and enjoyment of English and a deep knowledge of how language works in a wide variety of real-world spoken and written texts. Language is distinct from A-level Literature as, on this course, you will focus mainly on non-fiction texts.

This GCSE will focus on developing your reading and writing skills.

In class, you will practice exam technique and read extracts from a range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction to develop your analytical skills.

The English Functional Skills course is designed to help build your skills and confidence in English so that you can progress either to the next level of English Functional Skills or the GCSE English Language course, depending what Level of Functional Skills you start on.

The classes are small so there is lots of individualised help available; the emphasis is on support with your literacy.

Reading and writing tests are taken on computers and you can take them when you are ready and as often as you need to succeed.

Speaking and listening is also part of the assessment and this will be assessed by your teacher during the course. Here, as well, you will have several opportunities to succeed.

Geology is a practical, multidisciplinary science. Geologists are scientific detectives who try to reveal the past and predict the future of the Earth, studying rocks, earthquakes, volcanoes and the landforms of the planet.

Fossils are studied to help understand the evolution of life. Geologists also play a leading role in managing natural materials such as water supplies, energy resources and mineral deposits.

Core content: Rocks and minerals; Earth structure; tectonics; sedimentary environments; igneous and metamorphic processes; how the Earth has changed over time; Earth resources.

Non-core content: Planets; lithosphere; British stratigraphy; Quaternary geology; critical resources; geohazards; basin analysis.

History is a very rewarding subject to study because it tries to interpret and explain the events, issues and major personalities that have helped to shape the world we live in.

The options in the first year are linked by the themes of nationalism and dictatorship and their links with democracy.

In studying Germany (Paper 1) and either Italy or Spain (Paper 2), a similar pattern of political change occurred that saw unstable democracies replaced by nationalist dictatorships, with significant impacts on the wider history of Europe, before returning to democratic forms of government.

The course will help develop the skills and qualities required for further education or employment. It will help you develop the ability to evaluate and analyse evidence.

It will also help you to formulate clear and precise arguments that are well-communicated and well-supported so you should never lose an argument again!

Core MathsAS-level / AQA

Mathematics is recognised as being one of the most desirable A-levels in order to progress into higher education and improves your career prospects in any field of employment. As well as proving your mathematical ability, an A-level in Maths demonstrates valuable analytical and problem solving skills.

Core (Pure) Mathematics: This extends work covered at GCSE on algebra and trigonometry as well as starting some new ideas such as Calculus.

Statistics: Statistical techniques based on probability are used to analyse data and to help with decision making.

Mechanics: Describe with maths the motion of objects and how they respond to forces. Learn about mathematical modelling by turning a complicated physical problem into a simpler one that can be analysed and solved using mathematical methods.

Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) is a relatively new qualification designed for students who do not want to take the subject at A-Level but do use maths in other subjects and wish to study maths further. It is a one year course only.

It helps to develop students’ mathematical skills and thinking and supports courses such as A-level Psychology, Sciences and Geography as well as technical and vocational qualifications. It provides students with the mathematical skills to tackle problems in a variety of different real and realistic contexts.

Paper 1: Analysis of Data – data and sampling, measures of spread, box and whisker plots, cumulative frequency graphs, histograms; Personal Finance – budgeting, tax, controlling debt, interest rates and mortgages, exchange rates; Modelling and Estimation.

Paper 2 (Critical Path and Risk Analysis): Critical Path Analysis – using activity networks in order to plan how projects can be completed as quickly and as efficiently as possible; Expectation – Using Venn diagrams and tree diagrams to calculate probabilities; Cost-Benefit Analysis –calculating the benefit you expect to receive from carrying out a project and comparing it with the expected cost.
