Energy is a driver of development and is one of the

prime concerns for all developing countries including

India. Energy use pattern of a country determines the

growth of its peoples quality of life. Climate change is

recognized as a global problem and most potent

threat for planet Earth. Fate of the planet depends on

what energy options we people adopt. Energy man-

agement is a powerful tool which not only reduces

emissions of green house gases and conserves pre-

cious natural resources of earth. It also directly con-

verts into reduction in cost of production. Energy

costs form a significant portion of the total cost of

production of a consumer good or a service. Reduc-

tion in energy consumption thus translates to savings

of resources, both tangible and intangible. Energy

    management systems (EnMS) standard ISO-

50001:2011 provides its users the opportunity to use

available energy resources efficiently and enhance

    competitiveness. Like other management systems

standards of ISO, this is also a voluntary standard and

requires the users to bring continual improvement in

their energy performance. ISO 50001 provides bene-

fits for organizations large and small, in both public

and private sectors, in manufacturing and services, in

    all regions of the world.
