Golf News…….. Mike Barkley, Cliff Howe, Jim Thompson & Neil Hartney won the 16th Sutton Stag Scramble with a score of 55, 17-under par tying the tournament record. Mr. Sutton turned 95, December 28th. Sadly Mr. Sutton passed on New Year’s morning ending an

era of golf and kinship with our Club. Mr. Sutton was a tremendous asset to the club; he served as President in 1964 and 1986. He was always a promoter of our events, rousing the troops making sure they signed up for games and tournaments. He never missed a tournament and played golf every day the course was open, he and Red Kinzel would play in the $10 game at noon and come back and play in Sundowners in the evening. Mr. Sutton would hit golf balls every day around 10:00, even after his fall that broke his hip Chris would bring him over in his red cart so he could hit balls, always working on his game. He loved Carolina, rooting for both UNC and Duke; he also loved to watch the Rays. Mr. Sutton grew up playing all sports and was a Carolina Golden Gloves lightweight Champion. He entered the U.S. Army infantry in 1942 and retired as a Colonel in 1974. As a combat commander he served the North African and Italian campaigns, earning the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He spent a lot of time with me in my office, I loved all the stories of his life that he took the time to share with me. We will miss him dearly, Frank Sutton, what a life and what a legacy he has left us with to remember this great man! The Club Championship Qualifier is Saturday, February 1st, with the first round Sunday, February 2nd. Players who qualify automatically qualify for the St. Pete Cup in June. All Flights of the Club Championship will be Saturday, February 8th. Flight Matches may be played before the post dates with the consent of your opponent. The Ladies’ Championship is scheduled for March 11th, 13th, 18th, Tuesday-Thursday-Tuesday. The Men’s and Ladies, Championships are club sponsored events and there is no entry fee. The LGA Lady Handicap is set for February 11th, 13th & 18th. Our Sadie Hawkins mixed event is Sunday, February 16th, the event is Better Ball Net and Girls ask the Guys (not your Beau). Sign up in the pro shop or reply to the email to sign up for the fun event. We will have a Gold/Green Tee Flight(s). County Golf will be here Monday, February 10th, this will also be a double shotgun start 8:30 & 1:00, and there will be limited spots available for member play in the afternoon shotgun. We have a Taylor Made, Bridgestone & Cobra Demo Day set for Saturday, February 15th 10:00 – 2:00.

Terry Decker Golf Professional

Our 88th New Year’s Invitational concluded Sunday, January 12th. After a variety of

weather conditions the first three days, Sunday’s final round was played under sunny skies with cool temperatures and enough of a northeast wind to keep things interesting. Sam Horsfield, a junior at Ridge High School in Davenport, Florida, entered the final round with the lead, having posted rounds of 69-65-71 for his 205 total. Philippe Schweizer, a Purdue University freshman, trailed by one shot. Hans Reimers(209 total) from Mercer University and recent UNC-Chapel Hill graduate Michael McGowan(210 total)rounded out the final group. Horsfield, an 11-shot winner of the Florida State Amateur Championship this past June, had recently posted a 10-under par 60 in the opening round of the Greater Orlando City Championship(he followed with rounds of 69 and 74, ultimately good for a 5-shot victory). Horsfield’s birdie on number 1 Sunday earned him a 3-shot lead as his nearest pursuer, Schweizer, failed to get a long birdie putt down in two. That lead was never less than 2 shots the rest of the day, in fact had extended to 7 shots early in the back nine. Sam ultimately eagled 18 for a final 70 and a four day total of 13-under par 275. Philippe Schweizer also eagled 18 and finished in the runnerup postion with 279. Mike McGowan, a runnerup in 2010 and 4th place finisher in 2012, posted 282, good for 3rd place. Tampa’s Joe Alfieri successfully defended his mid-amateur (ages 25-49)division title, posting a two-under par total of 286, good for an overall 9th place tie. Tom Hyland repeated as senior champion with a 3-round total of 222, good for a one-shot victory of veteran local player Dennis Monahan. Eric Skillman led club members with a 72-hole total of 296. Recently turned 25, Eric finished 3rd behind Alfieri in the mid-amateur group. Sam Horsfield narrowly missed becoming our youngest winner ever. Sam celebrated his 17th birthday about a month ago and we have to go all the way back to 1928 to find Johnny Revolta, that year’s winner about two months shy of 17. Revolta went on to play the PGA tour, winning 12 times including a PGA Championship. We can only guess but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Sam Horsfield do at least that well. He indicated he was looking forward to defending his championship here next year. After a cool start, Sunday proved to be a great day, weatherwise, and a gallery of 100-150 followed play on Sunday afternoon. The course, although soft, was quite playable with the greens’ subtleties providing their usual challenge. The greens, clubhouse and golf staffs did a great job for the week. Special thanks to members who hosted players for the week. Last but not least, Terry Decker deserves all praise for his accomplish-ments. This was Terry’s 20th New Year’s as head professional and he displayed every bit as much professionalism and enthusiasm this year as he did for his first one. Richard Hope Tournament Chairman

RAYMOND JAMES SUPER SENIOR GRAND PRIX

AT THE ST. PETERSBURG COUNTRY CLUB

A USTA CATEGORY II TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Dear Tennis Supporter:

The 10th Annual Raymond James Super-Senior Grand Prix will be held at the St. Petersburg Country Club from February 24th through

March 2rd, 2013. Eight age divisions (55--59, 60--64, 65--69, 70--74, 75--79, 80--84, 85--89, and 90+) will be played in both men’s singles

and doubles. The Category II designation means the tournament is second in importance only to the USTA National championships. This is

the only senior tournament of this quality in the Tampa Bay Area and one of only three in Florida. Around 200 players from all corners of

the U.S., Canada, and other countries will come to St. Petersburg to participate in this event. A number of these players will have top

world rankings in their age divisions. The level of play is very high even in the older age divisions. These talented seniors are truly inspiring

to watch.

The players compete for USTA ranking points and for prize money. To help make this tournament more enjoyable for the players and

fans, we are seeking additional sponsors. Half of your contribution will go towards prize money for the players (to help cover their travel

expenses), and half to the club (to defray the costs of running the tournament). The following levels of participation are available, with rec-

ognition for the sponsors as shown. (Please note that these sponsorships will not qualify as charitable donations, but most businesses and

professionals should be able to write off the donation as an advertising and promotional expense.)

Friends of Tennis…..….$25 contribution…....Your name or that of your business will be listed in the tournament

program.

Ace Sponsor……............$50 contribution……Your business card will be printed in the tournament program.

Set Point Sponsor……..$100 contribution……Receive a quarter page business ad and name on tournament T-shirt.

Match Point Sponsor…$200 contribution…..Receive half page business ad, name on tournament T-shirt, and one

tournament T-shirt.

Grand Slam Sponsor….$300 contribution and above…..Receive full page business ad, name on tournament T-shirt,

one tournament T-shirt, and two tickets to the player dinner-dance. A reusable 2’ x 4’

banner can be added for and additional $60.

(Individual sponsors who do not have a business to advertise will be personally recognized in the tournament program.)

If you would like to be a sponsor, please provide the information requested below:

Tennis Talk

2014 is now well underway. This is one on the busiest times of the year. The Satellite, PADL and South Pinellas leagues are going strong. We’ve had a little cool weather, but for the most part it’s been pretty nice. We’ve been having lots of great days for tennis. The month is barely beginning and it is time for the Club Mixed Doubles Championships on Feb. 1-2. We’ll have A and B divisions this year. The Men’s and Ladies Doubles Club Championships will be held April 5 and 6. The Raymond James Super-Senior Grand Prix will be held February 24 - March 2. Some of the best senior players in the country and around the world will play this event. There are eight age divisions from 55 and over, up to 90 and over. It’s amazing what these players can do with the ball. I hope you can come out to see some great tennis. If you would like to contribute to the tournament, ads are available in the tournament program. You can also help the tournament by volunteer-ing to house a player. I have been emailing tennis players about court conditions and tennis events. If you would like to receive these blasts, write me at [email protected] or call the shop at 867-9105 and give me your email address. We are now in the busy season so please be sure to call ahead and book a court for night play as well as for morning play. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are our busiest mornings, and Tuesday and Wednesday are the busiest nights for play.
