Hunger is a Blight on Our Humanity Hunger is morally unjustifiable --

bad for people and communities bad for business bad for peace

Yet --- 852,000,000 people world wide are faced with hunger

Can we agree on the focus of our work?

Page 3: Enhanced Private-Public Alignment to Reduce World Hunger How to Increase Private Sector Participation.

What is the Focus of Our Work? Is it a problem of supply or access?

Does it require an immediate or long term solution?

Who’s Problem is it Anyway?

The Need for A Coordinated Global Food Banking

Effort Increasing rates of hunger (developed and

developing countries) Growing unacceptable waste of food (post-

harvest crop loss, surplus, other) Hundreds of thousands of independently

operated hunger-fighting agencies / NGOs Too little professionalism in sourcing and

distributing food Too few vetted, community or national global

hunger voices Private and public sector anti-hunger resources

not adequately aligned

Page 5: Enhanced Private-Public Alignment to Reduce World Hunger How to Increase Private Sector Participation.

Global food surplus – issue is access, not supply World smaller, grocery products companies

growing larger Proven solutions exist People, businesses, foundations and governments

believe and trust private donors and volunteers. Increased willingness to share (GFN’s basis for

existence) Climate for success is better than in many years

We Can Do Better Today, there are approximately 1,000 food banks

worldwide that distribute more than 3.5 billion pounds annually

Members of GFN: 70% of food banks and 85% of all food

The average food bank assists 40,000 people, providing approximately 75 pounds to each person per year

But we reach less than 50 million of the 852 million hungry people

Clearly we need to expand the reach and create more food banks
