JULY 2010 REPORT: ASSESSMENT OF BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY’S

FIRE PROTECTION PROGRAM

Finding 201 O-FP-L 1-1: Egress paths in buildings with elevated fire risks (facilities that lack automatic sprinkler protection or have exposed polystyrene foam insulation* on the HVAC ducts) are not being maintained to assure access to exits are clear, unobstructed, and unencumbered (not to hinder or impede the action or performance of).

Polystyrene

Polystyrene produces a highly intense fire and a thick black smoke. The intensity of a polystyrene fire has been proven to be

able to outrun sprinkler protection in tests.

* Bldg 480 should have the Polystyrene removed with the completion of RSL I project.

** Chemistry should have the poly removed and sprinkler installed with the end of RSl II project.

Buildings with Polystyrene

Once seven foot wide, now 5 foot. What happens when doors are open and materials

are being loaded into the cabinets?

Is less better?

Page 7: “Enhanced Housekeeping Requirements in Egress Paths in Buildings with Polystyrene”

When three floors of people come down the stairs, does their safety have to rely on

the bicycles staying under the stairs?

Problems are not always visible from the inside.

A temporary blockage can occur during a temporary fire leading to a temporary life loss.

Starting to get narrower

Still not bad?

Is this worse?

Is this worse? (door can only swing 90 degree due to the tanks)
