Steps involved in producing an attractive sketch (kitchen utensils)

A sketch is a simply or hastily executed drawing or painting, especially a preliminary one, giving the essential features without the details. It is often used by an artist or a designer to record down what they see. It is also a way for the artist to turn their imagination into reality. Sketching is important to architects as it allows the architect to generate more ideas and communicate to the clients about it. A sketch is frequently used as it does not require a lot of complicated steps and you don’t have to be Picasso to do a sketch. All you need is your imagination and some simple drawing skills then, voila! There you have it. I was given a task to draw a kitchen utensil sketch, and I am about to share with you of this journey of mine in producing this attractive sketch.

First of all, I have almost zero knowledge about the kitchen utensils as I have never in my life cooked an actual meal before. Except if frying an egg counts. I thought it would be difficult for me to choose one but surprisingly, I had my eyes on the kitchen utensil I want for the first five seconds I stepped into the kitchen. It is the smooth looking wooden rice scoop. I was required to use all my five senses on the kitchen utensil so I will explain to you about the experience. It was brown in colour with wooden texture, smooth as it was polished, totally tasteless because it was cleaned after being used every time, definitely odourless and the only thing that can be heard from is my mother nagging at me not to damage it. The purpose of the wooden rice scoop is to scoop rice. Yes it is that simple. But my mother uses it as a soup paddle sometimes. As for the reason why I chose it is because every utensil in the kitchen is made from steel and the colour silver looks really boring to me. This wooden rice scoop gave me a feeling of being closer to the nature.

After deciding and thinking it through, I proceeded to start on my sketching. The outlines of the sketch were drawn with a mechanical pencil while the shadings were done with a 2B pencil. The one I used for my form 5 SPM papers. It was not that difficult as it was all done free handed not because I was lazy, but because I prefer sketching it free hand. My workspace was terribly messy when I started my sketch but it did not affect the work progress as it is always this untidy. The sketch was done is less than forty minutes and I would not say it was easy.

To make my sketch looks more appealing, I spent another fifteen minutes staring at it wondering how to improve it, and then, I gave up. While I was scrolling through Instagram, a picture caught my attention. It was taken with a cartoon filter which makes the picture looks as if it was a sketch. I did the same and I was able to shade my sketch patently. There were mistakes made during the process. But it was okay all thanks to my Faber-Castel eraser. Several attempts later my sketch was all neat and done.

In a nutshell, sketching can be done quick and easily without any complicated steps. But in my case, it actually took me an hour to finish it because during the process I had numerous breaks for snacks and social media which I would like to avoid doing it again for of my assignments in the future. I have to say I was slightly disappointed with the sketch as it was not as good as I expected it to be but I do feel

successful and satisfied. Even though I had a hard time maintaining my focus, but I managed to accomplish what I started. If I were given a chance to redo such interesting task and have such experience, I would honestly choose to do it again as I really love drawing.
