His name was Hasan Vazir, but the suffix of “Mullah” gave him the well-likedidentity of Hasan Mullah. His beard was of a short-boxed style, and whateverconnection he had for ‘mullahism’ must be footed on revulsion. He enteredthe precincts of Dow with distinctive branded politics of NSF and the ‘leftwing’.

He was a regular canteen dweller who loved to enjoy the protracted company offriends on the same wave length. He would say hello to every Tom, Dick andHarry and knew the ways to craft a niche in the hearts of numerous. When hestood for the election of clinical secretary he had a landslide victory. It was owedmore to his amazing public relationship expertise than the ideological affiliation.

The romantic days of Dow ended and Hassan reached England. Time went byand he became a pathologist. With aim to serve the country he came to Pakistanwhere Shaukat Khanum Memorial had the initial cry of birth in Lahore.

Mullah was instrumental in enacting the department of Pathology. Somehow hecould not reconcile with conditions in Lahore and returned in a few years. Hemoved to Northern Ireland. Conditions here suited his lifestyle and the bonds ofaffinity to that country grew stronger with time. He is a pathologist par excellencein a renowned London Derry hospital today. Hassan has earned the distinction as aMedical Educationist.

President John Kennedy was an extremely fast reader of his times. Hassan isendowed with the same faculty. A literary mindset, intelligence earned withexperience and plenty of leisure time can transform you into a prolific reader andscholar. He is a gifted wizard of computer technology. Understanding of theintricate dynamics of complex software is his exceptional ability. Mullah can safelyadopt it as a second profession.

Hassan Vazir of today is an uncontaminated humanitarian. With the beard whitenow he not only looks ‘full-grown’ but a charismatic figure. Perceptions about thediversity of human nature, to be careful about hurting anybody’s feeling, to expresshis dissent on a subject in a courteous way are his meritorious virtues.

You discover new things every day. HasanMulla is really Hasan vazir! He may have equally thought of me as Tom, Harry or even a Dick!but I always admired his soft, cool, thoughtful and dignified manner. Some how I not not see mullah as doctor of dead. He has so much to offer to the living. I came to know Hasan better during final year and house year though parveen, babar, amir and Ifti when I lodged myself firmly in the 'red camp'(no pun intended). So many of you have such glorious facets that I want to go back in reverse in the time tunnel so that I can also learn a thing or two.Have a great week Hasan VazirMunir

True, ''Life is never dull when Mulla is around''. When I first met this polite, sophisticated, kind person, I never believed the 'LLPL' guys when they said that Mulla can go completely wild when things don't go quite the way he likes to be. I was not aware of those wild moments until I started going out with these boys for a bite to eat. on one such occasions we had to visit about 10 or 11 different restutants until mulla was satisfied with the venue, menue and the serving staff. Mulla! I loved you then and I still love you. I love you for spoiling us by calling us every weekend. I get worried if I don't get a call from you on the weekends (I know that's mean but it's all your doing). Congratulations! !!! Mulla & Barbara, enjoy the week and life. Parveen

He is wonderful person with a kind soul.Zia

Hahahah. . . .his time has come! Great write up Shoaib, by the way.I first came across him in DJ science college, along with Babar, Shakir momoon ,Abbas Zafar. Used to see him but not much contact. We used to hang around with Shuja, Habib public school connection, you see. He was the “alpha male”, Shuja I mean JDow politics brought us together and have not looked back since. And ,my God! what a find he has been! Spend a lot of time with him along with other punters, from fighting elections alongside him, me for Social secretary, to sharing a room in Hostel 3 and 4, to studying together for some exam or the other, going to his house. . .boy the memories come flooding back and all good ones.Of course the word Mulla gave rise to few other legendry phrases like. . .Pahar ganje ka bahari bakra andMulla teri . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Just joking mulla, don’t take you glasses off JHis wedding to Barbara was memorable. Took over the whole hotel and Daddy brought along some

Qawwali tapes which we played most of the night in the lounge/bar.When we came abroad there was a big gap where there was not much contact and then we got together. . . hence LLPL UK came along.Daddy is right he is the only one amongst us who regularly keep in touch. We talk quite a bit about technology/computers etc, a shared interest. . . and quiet often agree to disagree. He hates to toe the line and will go his own way. He has a passionate dislike for big companies imposing their will on consumers!! Once his mind is made up. . . forget it!!What can I say about Barbara. . he is a lucky SOB ! She is beautiful, gentle and mild mannered a perfect couple.I will shut up now. . . . .Chaudhry

CongratulationsMulla is a really great, humble friend, who shows no discrimination towards others. He maintains his friendships with great responsibility and he follows “Batho Pele Principles” (which means People First, in Zulu). Mulla's driving was legendary. Unsuspecting drivers who happened to overtake him, especially on the wrong side, would immediately realise who the King of the Road was. Ride in his car was exciting and exhilarating. Today you can see some glimpses of the retired old racer but most of the time you can go to sleep in the back of his C6 Limo like I did on our way to Ardara.

He had a fiery temper specially if woken up in the middle of his afternoon nap. Choudhry devised an ingenious method of poking him with a long stick from outside the Hostel room window to wake him up gently! Siestas have gone but he still value his 8 hour sleep. On our latest LLPL he didn't show any annoyance at waking up at 5 AM to catch a ferry at but snored all the way to Sicily.

Once I needed to speak gently with someone who had unknowingly stepped on my toes. Hasan came along for support. We found the guy as we crossed the archway under Surgical Six but unfortunately I didn't have any conversation with him and he lost a few teeth. I don't think today's Mulla will let me be so silly.

These days there are a very few, occasional lapses in his mature and mild attitude when you can see his real annoyance. Last one was when he ordered us to walk out of a restaurant in Valletta after some poor service and delays but still didn't say a word to the manager.

Some things about him have not changed. He is still a selfless and caring soul. A great listener and advisor. Will go to the end of the world to help his friends. Party is dull without him because he still lets us poke fun at him.

Thank you Hasan for being there for me when I was down and depressed and going through a particularly traumatic phase in my life. Like many others I also appreciate your regular phone calls. Kosar
