If you don’t end up having an English lesson on your first day, you can leave this project in your tutor room. The task is to create your own superhero and to design an appropriate costume for your him or her. The costume should be designed to represent your superhero’s personality traits, as well as their heritage and powers. Typically, superheroes often wear capes, so I have designed one for Thor to show that he is the typical hero who would sacrifice himself for others. Additionally, the burgundy colour is used to represent the fact that he can be quite reckless and dangerous.

Superhero Project

You will need to bring this homework to your first English lesson at Droitwich Spa High

School. If you don’t end up having an English lesson on your first day, you can leave this

project in your tutor room.

The task is to create your own superhero and to design an appropriate costume for your

him or her. The costume should be designed to represent your superhero’s personality

traits, as well as their heritage and powers. You could undertake this task in any of the

following ways:

History Your Droitwich Spa High School History Transition project – ‘making history’

We’re really looking forward to meeting you in September and going back in

time to study some of the most important events in Britain’s history !

Before we meet then, we’d like to challenge you to ‘make history’ – literally !

You’re going to create and make your own model of a famous historical scene !

whether you’re interested in Ancient Rome, Viking invaders or Tudor Monarchs, whether

you want to re create a battle of WW2 like Pearl harbour, a famous scientific discovery like

discovering penicillin or a moment that shook the world like Queen Elizabeth defeating

the Spanish armada there are millions of famous historical moments, people and periods to

choose from.

Will you have the execution of Henry VIII’s wife Anne Boleyn ? Will you have Boudiccea

fighting the Roman forces ? Will your model show Neil Armstrong landing on the moon in

1969 ?

Which history most interests you ? Here’s your chance to re-create a famous historical

scene using whatever materials you have at home ! The ideas around this page have all

been made with simple paper, glue and colour ! the more creative the better ! It has to be

small enough to carry into school and show us, but that’s the only limit !

Don’t worry ! If you can’t make a model, you can draw a plan of one and submit this ! If its

really good, we can turn it into a model when you arrive at Droitwich Spa High School !

The History department will be judging all the entries and the best three will win a prize

and be put on display in the department for all our historians to admire your work.

We’ve included a template for some soldier figures and some historic buildings like

medieval buildings, a castle from the middle ages and a Tudor house – these can easily be

adapted to create figures and buildings of your choice. There’s no limit or rules on what you

can select ! You have all of history to choose from !

We look forward to seeing our next History-makers at work and the moments in time

you’re going to capture.

SCIENCE

Under The Sea Science Project

BIOLOGY

Task 1: Either pick one of these sea creatures or choose a different one. Can you describe

anything about that sea creature that shows it is adapted to live well in the sea? I have

given some examples below:

It has a streamlined shape to swim fast. Big claws to defend itself against predators

Task 2:

What are corals? Your job is to create a large drawing of a coral organism. Use the

description below to guide your drawing. Draw in pencil only – no colours required.

Although they can look like plants, corals are actually animals. Each coral animal is called a

polyp. Polyps resemble a marshmallow. They have a hole running through the middle,

rather like when you toast a marshmallow on a stick and push the stick right through the

centre from one flat side to the other. Tentacles surround the hole at the top. These look

like the 'arms' of an octopus but without any suckers. Instead, polyps have special stinging

cells inside their tentacles. Coral polyps capture and feed on small organisms floating or

swimming in the sea. To protect themselves and to have something to hold onto, polyps

secrete (a little bit like sweating) molecules which create a rock called limestone. The

bottom of a polyp holds tight to the limestone and it also creates a little tunnel for itself.

When alarmed, the polyp will withdraw its tentacles and hide inside the tunnel. Limestone

contains the elements calcium, carbon, and oxygen. Coral polyps are amazing because they

have another type of organism living inside their bodies. These are called algae. Algae have

chloroplasts and can photosynthesise. They provide the polyp with glucose and, in return,

the algae has a safe place to live.

Polyps live in large groups called colonies. Colonies of corals can resemble round boulders

or the fanned branches of a tree. When colonies join together and grow on top of one

another, a coral reef is formed. Reefs will only develop in warm, clear, shallow seas and the

water must be neutral or alkaline.

PHYSICS

Task 1: Fill a glass with water. Put a pen or pencil into the glass. Look at the water and

pencil carefully. Draw a diagram of what you see – make sure it is neat, use a ruler if you

can and no shading or arty bits! Can you find an explanation of why this happens?

Task 2: Research some examples of how marine organisms use sound and light.

CHEMISTRY

Task 1: If you can, put an egg into a glass of vinegar. Can you see anything that suggests a

chemical reaction might be happening? Leave the glass for 24 hours, then carefully pour

the old vinegar out and replace it with fresh vinegar. Leave it for a week. Very carefully

pour the vinegar away and rinse with water. Pat dry. What has happened to the shell?

This is happening in our oceans at the moment. Carbon dioxide gas is increasing in the

atmosphere and dissolves into the oceans. When this happens, the water becomes acidic,

like the vinegar. What do you think will happen to the sea creatures that have shells made

of the same substance as the egg shells?

Task 2: Research the chemistry behind the destruction of corals by the increasing acidity of

seawater.

GEOGRAPHY

Making a Weather Station

Hello Year 7 and welcome to Geography at Droitwich Spa High School. We are going to set

you a three week project for collecting information about the weather this summer. We

don’t mind when you start this but we want you to be a weatherman or weatherwoman for

two weeks. To do this we are going to ask you to make weather instruments and then

collect a series of weather data. This is a link to how the professionals do this and it is

worth reading before you start.

Your task is to make an instrument to record information for every type of weather stated

below. Unfortunately you cannot make a homemade thermometer so if you have a

thermometer at home you can use that instead.

There are four things we would like you to record

We want you to spend the one week getting the materials and making your weather

Once you have made your instruments we want you to record the weather information on

the table attached. We would like you to do this for two weeks. In the last column you can

add any comments about difficulties or problems you had as well as the temperature. You

can write this down from a website or the TV or from a thermometer if you have one at

home.

Please take photos of your instruments. We are going to turn this into a competition with

prizes for the best instruments in each category so we shall have a look at the photos when

you join the school. You can send them to me at [email protected] -

please make sure you include your name and the name of your school in the email. Design

and colour as well as accuracy of recording the weather will be the key elements we shall

look for when making our judgements.

Tips - When you record you information for Wind speed you can just work note how many

spins your anemometer makes in a set time of perhaps 1 minute each day. For pressure

you can just describe it has high or low. This is about taking part as much as becoming the

next Shefali Oza.

Performing Arts

Hello Year 7. We are looking forward to welcoming you in September. Performing Arts

subjects at the high school are very busy with lots of Music, Drama and Dance

performances throughout the year. We also combine our efforts and last year put on a very

successful production of School of Rock and we are currently making plans for another

production next year. We are on a mission to discover new talent and would like you to

show us how talented you are. This is your challenge.

1. We would like you to watch a musical of your choice for inspiration – here are some

suggestions below but, you don’t have to choose one from this list, you could choose

something else;

Make a film trailer to publicise a musical – this could be acted out or you could

create a short stop animation trailer – you could create your own musical

sound track to accompany it.

Some of these suggestions can be easily combined and if you want to do this we would

encourage you to go for it. You have plenty of freedom and choice to showcase your

creative talents.

Droitwich Spa High School PE Department’s Five Days of Fitness

Welcome to the Droitwich Spa High School PE Department. We look forward to meeting

you in September, but in the meantime, we have a little challenge for you.

Attached are five fitness challenge cards that you can do in the safety of your own home.

You may have seen them before and may even have done some of them through your

middle school. If you have, then this is an opportunity to try and beat your previous score.

Read the instructions and complete one challenge per day. Complete each challenge safely

and honestly. Give yourself a maximum of three attempts at each challenge and rest as

much as you need in between attempts. Record each score on the table below and then

state which score is your best one.

Most importantly have fun. Concentrate on what you are doing and try to improve on your

score each attempt.
