Brookdale’s English as a Second Language (ESL) ProgramBrookdale’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMHundreds of students from many countries come to Brookdale to study English as a Second Language each semester. The Language Department employs experts in second language acquisition and offers an inviting atmosphere to cultural diversity. Brookdale’s ESL program is open to anyone 18 years of age or older who wants to improve his / her spoken and written English, either to pursue a college degree or for personal development.Students must have a minimal command of the language to qualify for this program.

ABOUT OUR ESL COURSESBrookdale offers seven levels of ESL ranging from beginning to advanced. All new ESL students are tested and carefully placed in the correct level. Classes focus on the development of conversation, grammar, and writing skills.Supplementary courses are also available in pronunciation, idiomatic expressions, American culture, and writing.

TUTORINGFree ESL tutoring is available to all enrolled ESL students. Brookdale’s ESL program features an 18-station computer lab equipped with ESL learning software. Staff assisted open lab hours are available to students who wish to reinforce their classroom learning.

HOW TO APPLYEvery ESL student must take the ESL Placement Test at Brookdale.1. Come to the CAR building on our Lincroft campus to fill

out an admission application. ($25.00)2. Ask for a permission slip to take the ESL Placement Test.3. Bring the permission slip and a photo ID to Brookdale’s

Testing Center (basement of CAR building) to take the ESL placement test.

4. Make an appointment for your oral interview by calling our ESL desk at 732-224-2656.

ESL PLACEMENT TESTThe ESL Placement Test is offered at our main campus in Lincroft in the CAR building and at:• Brookdale at Freehold, 732-625-7003• Brookdale at Hazlet, 732-787-0019• Brookdale at Neptune, 732-774-3363• Brookdale at Long Branch, 732-229-8440

In addition, free ESL classes are offered for students with minimal command of the language at these locations.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Brookdale Community College offers a full time ESL program. International students must apply through the International Education Center.International students will have to take the ESL Placement Test at Brookdale’s Testing Center, but will first need to contact the International Education Center.
