For thousands of years, people have used
dogs to do different tasks. Farmers and
shepherds use dogs to help them when rounding
up sheep, cattle and goats. One of the best
types of dog at doing this is the Border Collie. They are very smart
and easy to train. They are first-class at herding sheep.

My name is Jamila. I have a goldfish. I
keep it in a big tank, not a small bowl. I
clean out the tank once a week. I feed
Goldie twice a day on goldfish flakes.
I’m Gemma. My rabbit needs lots of
space to run around in. It also likes
somewhere to dig and hide. It eats
grass and carrots. It must have fresh
water to keep it healthy.

The first thing I do is boil the kettle.
Then I pour boiling water into the
teapot to warm it up. After I empty
the teapot, I put in a teabag and
pour on the hot water. I put a little
milk into my cup. After two or three
minutes, I pour the tea into my cup
and stir it with a spoon. Lovely!

Moose Hair Pie
This is my secret pie. Ssh! Don’t tell
anybody how I make it. Once you tell someone,
it won’t be a secret anymore. Everyone will
want to make their own.
When the moon is big and round, I creep
out into the woods near my house. There, I
collect lots of icky-sticky spider webs. If a spider gets cross, I turn it
into a potato. Serves it right! Then I find an old bar of soap and ask a
muddy, oinky pig to lick it.

As Maria stood at the bus stop, she rubbed her hands together.
Dad looked out of the window and picked up his umbrella.
The branches bent and the leaves scattered.
Sitting in the park, Mum used her magazine to fan herself.
Grandad got out his shovel and started to clear the path. SAMPLE

Josh stood behind the curtain. He
didn’t want to go on the stage. Everyone
was waiting.
At last, Josh came out. His golden
crown slipped down over his eyes.
When he heard some people laughing,
his face went red.
“Look at the ... em,” said Josh,
pointing upwards.
“Star,” whispered Joan.
“Look at the star,” said Josh. He
felt a bit happier then. Next, he had to
hand over the gift of gold. “I have a
gift,” he said, but he knew that he had
left it behind the curtain.
It went very quiet. Josh had to
think of something. “Have this golden
crown,” he said, smiling.
All the mums and dads clapped. SAMPLE

As I was going to St Ives, I met a man with seven wives.
Each wife had seven sacks, each sack had seven cats.
Each cat had seven kits: kits, cats, sacks and wives,
How many were going to St Ives?

Smiling blue sky, the day grows long
We can hear the blackbird’s song
The earth is warm and welcomes showers
Springtime magic brings the flowers
Snowdrops and yellow daffodils
Pots of cress on windowsills
Wake up trees and green the lane
Leaves are growing once again
Springtime Magic
Ducklings, tadpoles, fluffy chicks
Lambs are doing bouncing tricks
Now winter waves us all farewell
Springtime magic casts its spell

The Weather
Autumn comes after summer. There is less daylight. The
night is longer. It is cooler, wet and windy. Some mornings, it
is misty.

Fruit and Seeds
At this time of year, plants spread their seeds around.
Seeds are found inside fruit, such as apples, pumpkins
and tomatoes.

The Disappearing Dog
Harry had never taken his dog, Blackie, out for a walk on
his own before. The park was at the end of the street.

Harry skipped along the path to the park with Blackie
at his side.
In the park, Harry went on the swings, but, first, he tied
the dog lead to a bench.
Harry swung higher and higher. Blackie got very
excited. He jumped around and tugged at the lead, until he
broke free and ran off into the bushes.
Harry jumped off the swing and called for Blackie. He
called his name for a long time, but he didn’t come back. He
searched for over an hour. Tears ran down his face. But
there was no sign of the little black dog.
