Actually......I don’t think that’s most people experience. The only thing is.....there isn’t really any hard evidence to prove there are aliens from outer space.

To tell you the truth .....a lot of what you hear about alien encounters is false. To be honest.....I think you need to be more skeptical about what you read.

Show transcriptBOB:

Hi, it's the Bob and Rob Show. This is Bob.

ROB: And this is Rob.

BOB:Hi, Rob.

ROB:Hi, Bob, how are you doing?

BOB:I'm doing all right; good to be back here with you.

ROB:Yes, it's great to be back.

BOB: A bit of a commute1 to do the show.

ROB:It's okay.

BOB:I got a new job.

ROB:How's that doing?

BOB:It's going well. It's been a while, but it's going well.

ROB:Excellent, excellent.

1 we work at different schools now.

BOB:I miss you, though. I miss you, buddy.

ROB:We miss you at the office, too.

BOB:

I'm glad I'm still able to get together and do this important show for the world, for peace, for love. Okay, anyway, today's topic is, “aliens.” Not the kind that cross borders2, but the kind that come from outer space.

ROB:Extraterrestrial aliens.

BOB:Yes, extraterrestrial life which is life originating outside of earth. Now, the actual existence of aliens remainstheoretical; there is no evidence of extraterrestrial life that's been widely accepted by the scientific community. A lot of people say they've been abducted or seen aliens but the scientific community doesn't really ...

ROB: Doesn't acknowledge it. An extraterrestrial is a - well, E.T. , the famous movie by Steven Spielberg in theeighties. E.T. stands for Extra-

BOB:Terrestrial.

ROB:Extraterrestrial, yeah, so "ET phone home."3

BOB:You're good at that, Rob.

ROB:Remember that movie?

BOB:Were you in the E.T. costume4?

ROB:It was a good movie. The classical alien is light green or gray skinned, with a large head, and typical fourlimbs and two to five digit5 structure. It's fundamentally humanoid with a large brain to indicate intelligence. There have been many stories about kidnappings and abductions.

BOB: Abductions, yeah, scientific experiments on people by aliens, a lot of them sexual in nature. But again, a lot ofthem are stories, a lot of them could be hallucinations. But again, there isn't any concrete evidence in thescientific community. And many scientist believe if extraterrestrial life does exist, its emergence has occurredindependently, in different places in the universe. Where there's also a hypothesis suggesting maybe lifeemerged in one location, and then has spread between habital planets. Although I doubt that. I think the first

theory's probably more likely because we'd have civilizations living closer to us. I don't think there's anyintelligent life in our solar system - except the Bob and Rob Show.

ROB:The whole case of Roswell6 is interesting.

BOB:I think that's been debunked7, I don't believe in that at all.

2 alien is another term for foreigner or immigrant. Eg: He is an illegal immigrant .3 this was a popular line in the movie, E.T.4 maybe Rob played the role of E.T. in the movie.5

fingers and toes.6 supposed U.S. government cover up of alien life http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roswell_UFO_incident7 proven not true.

ROB:I don't know. I think there's a lot to be - it seems to me like another government cover-up8.

BOB:Well, covering something up - but probably it was during the Cold War - there were a lot of weather balloonsand experimental aircraft.

ROB:Yeah, I'm not so sure.

BOB:I just don't think the government's that capable9.

ROB:I don't know. I think ...

BOB:I mean ... after, Katrina, the hurricane in New Orleans.

ROB:

I think it was more capable, back then.

BOB:Well, I don't know. So you're saying you think there's aliens ... the government's hiding aliens?

ROB: Yeah, I think there's probably a case. I'm an alien. But enthusiasm towards the possibly of alien life, hascontinued well into the twentieth century. Roughly three centuries from the Scientific Revolution through to thebeginning to the moder n era of our solar system probes were the zenith ...

BOB:"Zenith" means "the high point."

ROB:

Yeah ...for the belief in extraterrestrials in the West. And a number of astronomers and other secular

10

thinkers and much of the general public, they were largely satisfied that aliens were a reality. But this trendwas finally tempered11 as actual probes12 visited potential alien abodes in the solar system.

BOB:Like Mars and the moon.

ROB:The moon was decisively ruled out as a possibly, while Venus and Mars, long the two main candidates ofextraterrestrial life form, they showed no obvious evidence of of current life.

BOB:There may be water on Mars, and it may have microscopic life but no martians13. In fact, nothing like War ofthe Worlds ... H.T. Wells. Have you seen the movie War of the Worlds?

ROB:I have, yeah.

BOB:The latest one with Tom Cruise?

ROB:

Yeah, the latest one.

BOB:That was pretty good?

ROB:Yeah, that's good. There's another really good movie called Forgotten that's very well made. I recommend thatmovie.

BOB:Have you every heard of Orson Wells?

ROB:Yeah.

BOB:Who directed Citizen Cane, supposedly one of the greatest movies of all-time. He got famous I think in thenineteen thirties (1930's). He was on the radio - a radio announcer and he read a passage from  War of theWorlds, and people actually thought aliens were invading the US, because he was reading it as if it were areport, and it caused real panic in the United States: people thought we were be invaded by aliens. So he'svery famous for that and I've got a little clip14 of it here. Let's listen to it:

OTHER:Ladies and Gentlemen. I've just been handed a message that came in from Grovers Mill by telephone. Justone moment, please. At least forty people, including six state troopers, lie dead in a field east of the village ofGrovers Mill. Their bodies burned and distorted beyond all possible recognition. The next voice you hear willbe that of, Brigadier General Montgomery Smith, commander of the state militia at Trenton, New Jersey. /Brigadier general Montgomery Smith: I have been requested by the governor of New Jersey, to place thecounties of Mercer and Middlesex and as far West as Princeton and east to Jamesburg under marshal law.No one will be permitted to enter this area, except by a special pass issued by state or military authorities.Four companies of state militia are proceeding from Trenton to Grovers Mill and will aid in the evacuation ofhomes within the range of military operations. Thank you. / Announcer: You have just been listening to,general Montgomery Smith, commanding the state militia at Trenton. In the meantime, further detail of thecatastrophe at Grovers Mill are coming in. The strange creatures, after unleashing their deadly assault, crawled back in their pit, and made no attempt to prevent the efforts of the firemen to recover the bodies and

extinguish the fire. The combined fire departments of Mercer county, are fighting the flames which menace theentire countryside. We have been unable to establish any contact with our mobile unit at Grovers Mill, but wehope to be able to return you there at the earliest possible moment. In the meantime, we take you to .... justone moment, please. Ladies and Gentlemen. I've just been informed that we have finally establishcommunication with an eye witness of the tradgedy. Professor Pierson has been located at a farm house nearGrovers Mill where he has establish an emergency observation post. As a scientist, he will give you hisexplanation of the calamity. The next voice you hear will be that of Professor Pierson, brought to you by directwire. / Professor Person: Of the creatures in the rocket cylinder at Grovers Mill, I can give you no authoritativeinformation either to their nature, the origin, or their purposes here on earth. Of their destructive instrument, Imight venture some conjectural explanation. For want of a better term, I shall refer to the mysterious weaponas a "heat ray."

BOB:It's kind of funny though, I can imagine people being terrified.

ROB:Sounds like an April Fool's Day joke15.

BOB: After that he came to Hollywood - that made him very famous. And he did Citizen Cane, which actually, kind ofruined his career, because he picked the wrong person to do a documentary on William Randolph Hearst16.But that's another show.

ROB: And wasn't he in The Third Man?

14

audio clip or short segment15 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Fool's_Day16 American newspaper tycoon in the 1920s and 30s. Today we have Rupert Murdoch of News Media.

BOB:He did a few other one's, but I think that movie was his ...

ROB:He's quite a big name. But in nineteen sixty-one (1961) the astronomer and astrophysicist, Dr. Frank Drake, devised the Drake Equation, which mathematically simplifies the rate of formation of suitable stars. So thefraction of those stars which contain planets - the number of earthlike worlds per planetary system - the

fraction of the planets were where intelligent life can develop. And the fraction of possible communicativeplanets - the lifetime of possible communicative civilizations - which scientifically stated, there are estimatedten thousand (10,000) planets containing intelligent life, with the possible capability of communicating with us,in the Milky Way17 galaxy.

BOB:Oh, wow! So it's an equation putting in all these variables and they came up with the number ten thousand( planets ...

ROB:Possibly.

BOB:

Possibly, containing intelligent life in the universe. That's amazing; that's a lot of planets.

ROB: And at the moment, I think one of the biggest NASA projects at the moment in America, is the Setti projectthe Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence ...

BOB: All they have to do is come here. They got all the extra extraterrestial intelligence they can handle18 right hereon the Bob and Rob Show. Tune in, it's right in front of their eyes, it's right under their noses19.

ROB:Well, they might be listening, because it's getting out there in the airwaves20.

BOB:We might even have listeners throughout the solar system.

ROB:That's true, the universe and beyond.

BOB:Going where no man has gone before21 ... the Bob and Rob Show. Actually, I've got a friend who lived on afarmer's property for a few years, and the farmer lived alone. He was a bit eccentric 22 and apparently heclaimed he was visited by aliens, sometimes. I interviewed my friend, who lived on this guy's property, andhe's going to tell us a little story about the man who's supposedly been visited by aliens.

ROB:Not abducted, just visited?

BOB:He might have been abducted. He drew little pictures of them and put them on his wall. I met him, he's aninteresting guy. Why don't we listen to my friend talk about him:

OTHER:  JAKE: When I was a young man I used to live on thirty acres out in the country. My landlord was kindof an eccentric older farmer: he was about eighty years old. He used to draw pictures that looked like they

were done by an eight year old child, and he would draw them with crayons - of these aliens - all the time hewould always be drawing these simple artwork of aliens and mother ships and strange things. And so, Iremember asking him about the aliens, and he told me how in the late forties he saw the mother ship23 comeover one of his fields, and he observed it for a little while and then it took off.

BOB: Was this guy crazy?JAKE: I think he was crazy, but you would have to decide yourself. I remember one of his stories was,

he woke up early in the morning, about two in the morning, from a noise and he was in the upper room of hishouse, second story, and he saw the mother ship right outside his window and it was attaching to the

electrical wire to get electricity off of the electric wires, to power the ship supposedly. It's really kind of strange. His aliens had large eyes and they were just sort of a bluish color and they had this strange tannish skin, andno hair. He described them as quite handsome, actually. And he said he could see the controls of the shipthrough like a bubble in the mother ship - kind of cigar shaped sort of thing. One thing I remember aboutDudley is he used to - one sort of entertainment for him is he would look through the newspapers and find allthe ads that had come out that day for food or for items at the hardware store. He would go out and buy tonsof fencing or whatever was on sale. And food, he would obsess about that, he had a bunch of freezers withthings in there that had been frozen for you know probably fifty years or something. On one occasion therewas a sale on milk - like he would always do things in large qualities: if potatoes were on sale really cheap, hewould - if they were below a threshold of some many cents per pound, he would send me out to do ashopping for him, because he was too old and I would buy tons and tons of potatoes that he would keep. Thisone occasion mile was on sale for who knows what, thirty cents a gallon or something. So he sends me outand he gives me this grocery list and instead of one or two gallons of milk there's like thirty gallons of milk. And I was just like "God do you really need this?"And he would freeze the milk, actually. And so, I go out to

Safeway the local supermarket and I have this cart and I'm just loading up milk and the thing is starting tobend because it's so weighted down. And I go through the checkout line and inevitably there would be someattractive young girl there and I would be embarrassed and my face would kind of be red, and she would lookat me with say all these potatoes or all this milk "Do you own a restaurant or something" and I would just say,"Ah, no."And I would be embarrassed and checkout all the tons of milk ...

BOB:Okay. Thank you very much, Jake.

ROB:Did you believe him?

BOB:

No. There might be intelligent life out there besides us - the Bob and Rob Show. I don't really think we've beenvisited by aliens. It's interesting, flying saucers24 and aliens have all kind of become popular in our culture, basically with the invention of airplanes, with modern aviation industry, with rockets. I don't think people wereclaiming to see flying saucers two hundred years ago, they were claiming to see demons. So it's really man-made, I think, a lot of this alien culture.

ROB:Having said that though - whether or not they actually exists - I think it would be highly unlikely that the waythe universe is now, it's so huge - that if we are the only living species in this microscope - we're nothing morethan a microscope in the universe - I can't believe it's just us.

BOB:I agree. I'm not saying that, I'm just saying that I 'm highly skeptical of people's claims that they're being visited

by aliens. Because, first of all, if they are in the universe, they're probably so far away that they won't be ableto reach us, even going at the speed of light. It might take millions of years to reach us. The universe is a bigplace.

ROB:There are worm holes25.

BOB:Oh, right. Worm holes like time travel. Okay, well, I'll let you study the worm holes. Okay, should we moveon26?

ROB:Yeah, let's do some phrasal verbs and idioms.

BOB: Aliens, you know apparently they have flying saucers ... so “fly around” we're going to look at fly phrasal verbsusing the verb "fly." For example, "fly around," "An insect is flying around the classroom," or "There's a flyingsaucer flying around the sky."

ROB: And also, more figuratively, you can say that "rumors fly around," it means "the rumors are going around."Basically that more people are hearing about them.

BOB: An example would be?

ROB:For example, "Rumors about the boss getting fired have been flying around the office."

BOB:Good, good. Also, another phrasal verb with fly is "fly at" which means to "attack suddenly or violently." Forexample, "After I called Rob a name he suddenly flew at me swinging his umbrella."

ROB:Yes, I have a very big umbrella. "Fly by," is another phrasal verb, and this means "how time goes quickly."

BOB:So, as you get older ...

ROB:The more time flies by.

BOB:Doesn't it. Or "fly past," which is kind of the same meaning as "fly by." When you sit next to an interestingperson on the airplane the time just seems to fly past. Okay, so idioms today?

ROB:"To jump ship."

BOB:Okay, we're talking about aliens, alien ships ... "jump ship," what does that mean?

ROB:This means to "leave your ship without permission." For example, "The two Navy seamen were arrested after jumping ship in Singapore."

BOB:What's another way of using that with a more idiomatic meaning?

ROB:It could mean "to leave an organization that you belong to suddenly or unexpectedly." For example, "Afterbeing offered a better salary from our competitors, Jim decided to jump ship."

BOB:You wouldn't jump ship from the Bob and Rob Show, would you?

ROB:No, I wouldn't set up a rival. There's only one Bob and Rob Show, Bob.

BOB:Yes, we cannot be duplicated.

ROB:That's right.

Page 9: English Lesson 110 Aliens

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/english-lesson-110-aliens 9/13

9

BOB:Bonus idiom is, "a tight ship." Let me give you an example, "My company is a good place to work, but theboss really runs a tight ship."

ROB:That's going to be in the study guide; you'll have to check it out27.

BOB:

You got to be a member to get the study guide though, right? And to get the four shows a month.

ROB:So what does a "tight ship" mean? You'll find it there.

BOB:Well, I think it's time for Ancient Japanese English Study Secret.

ROB: Ancient Japanese English Study Secret.

BOB:It's common to have disagreements but you want to kind of soften the disagreements. You don't want to be toaggressive like "You're wrong!" Even though you are always wrong, Rob, and I'm right. And here's some little

softeners or phrases you can use just so that you're not being too direct.

ROB:Or too harsh.

BOB:First one, "actually ..."

ROB:Secondly, we could say, "the only thing is .."

BOB:"To tell you the truth ..."

ROB:"To be honest ..."

BOB:For example, "Actually, I don't think that's most people's experience....." Oh no, so like for example, if Robsays ...

ROB:"It's obvious we're being visited by aliens from outer space."

BOB:"Actually, I don't think that's most people's experience." Or if I said, "It's obvious we're being visited by aliensfrom outer space," Rob could say ...

ROB:"The only thing is, there really isn't any hard evidence of that." If I said it again, "Hey, Bob, it's obvious we'rebeing visited by aliens from outer space."

BOB:I'd say, "Yeah, cause you are one." No, just joking. "Well, to tell you the truth, Rob, a lot of what you hearabout alien encounters, a lot of what you hear is false." Or, "It's obvious we're being visited by aliens fromouter space."

ROB:"Well, Bob, to be honest, I think you need to be more skeptical of what you read."

27 look at it

Page 10: English Lesson 110 Aliens

10

BOB:Okay, so there you go; there's some ways to soften disagreement.

ROB:Good points.

BOB:Moving along to our email bag we have a listener here: "Dear, Bob and Rob. Just wondering when we'll be

able to listen to your Podcast on the planet Mars. Signed, Your Martian fan." Well, Rob, so far we're onlypodcasting on earth.

ROB:Right.

BOB:Was that just a spaceship that just went by? No, maybe that's a car. But anyway, thank you Martian fan.

ROB:Will we be able to transmit beyond the earth?

BOB:We're working on it. I've been configuring the script - the RSS feed, so that it does do interstellar transmission,

but, Martian fan, we're working on it, and we'll get back to you in about a hundred and fifty years.

ROB:We've got to consult a bit more with our friends at NASA.

BOB:We might have to raise our membership fee, in order to get a radio device to do that.

ROB:Cool. Hang in there.

BOB:Hang in there, and we'll keep sending you the transcripts. Okay, thanks a lot for that email, Martian fan. Okay, let's do some Both Sides of the Pond.

ROB:What are we looking at this week, Bob?

BOB:Let's look at some pronunciation this week; just words that we say but might be a little bit different dependingon what side of the pond you're from. So for example, one of those things that floats in the water that has alight a light on it to warn ships, we call that a "buoy." What do you say in the UK?

ROB:In the UK we just call that a buoy.

BOB:How about someone that starts businesses, is very creative, outgoing ... we say, "entrepreneur."

ROB:We say, "entrepreneur." Another word that we have difference in pronunciation with is, "era."

BOB:I think we'd say, "era." Like the era of communication or information era.

ROB:That's interesting cause if we say, "era," in British English it means "mistake." We say, "era," the ? Era inJapan, for example.

BOB:I see. All right, and how about "garage," how would you say that in the UK?

Page 11: English Lesson 110 Aliens

7/25/2019 English Lesson 110 Aliens

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/english-lesson-110-aliens 11/13

11

ROB:Well, we say, "garage."

BOB:Oh, Really?

ROB:

However, high class or the "rpc" pronunciation type of English, we would probably say, "garage."

BOB:Okay, the higher the class the more like American English.

ROB:No quite, Bob.

BOB:It makes a lot of sense to me. Okay, how about, "hostile"?

ROB:We expand the second vowel sound we say, "hostile" and make it a bit longer in Britain.

BOB:Do you say, "hurricane"?

ROB:"Hurricane," or "hurricane."

BOB:Sometimes, you say, "hurricane"? That's a bit different then. Okay, well, that's been our Both Sides of thePond for the Aliens show. All right, let's do some announcements: If you're interested in receiving four shows aweek rather than two, plus detailed study notes and transcripts: consider becoming a Bob and Rob Showmember.

ROB:

And please checkout all the goodies we have in our store. And just to remind everybody again, our blogs nowat bobandrobshow.com.

BOB:That's true. And you can always send us an email or voice message, if you have any questions or comments. And if you know anyone that might be interested in our show, please let them know. Write a review on youriTunes.

ROB:Yes, if you'd put your name up there for us that would be great.

BOB: Any promotion would be great. So, Rob.

ROB:Should we finish up with some quotations and the song?

BOB:Sure, why don't you do the first one.

ROB:The first quotation is from - I believe it's a lady, a lady called, Joan Didion, and she says, "The fancy thatextraterrestrial life is by definition of a higher order than our own, is one that soothes all children and manywriters." Do you have any, Bob?

BOB:I have one by W.D. Ricktor, and I believe he was the person who wrote Invasion of the Body Snatchers - the

book or maybe the screenplay for the movie - but the quote is: "Why not a space flower, why do we alwaysexpect metal ships."

Page 12: English Lesson 110 Aliens

12

ROB:That's true.

BOB:That's pretty good. I think in Invasion of the Body Snatchers28 that's how they came - in the form of a flower.I think often people do think of ships, metal, flying saucers. And if you think of evolution, you don't really knowwhat kind of life could be produced on a planet ... another planet. It could be some gaseous creature or hugefloating jellyfish or jellyfish-like creatures. It's kind of hard, we always imagine them looking like us, but

somehow I don't think evolution on another planet would create something similar to us. We probably can'teven imagine what.

ROB:Certainly not made of metal. And another thing that gets on my goat29, is the way spaceships in SCI Fimovies they're always dirty, and if they're in space they can't really get dirty, can they?

BOB:That's true; I never thought about that. Maybe they've got dirt on them from their home planet.

ROB:Maybe, yeah.

BOB:

Our song today is called, "If the Aliens Came", by Ian Knapp. It's like what would they think of us if they came, who are these people or monkeys?

ROB:We got this song from Podshow, if you want to learn more about the artist, Ian Knapp, then please go towww.music.podshow.com.

BOB:Yeah, and I think we're going to take-off, not literally in a spaceship. I think it'stime for us to go. Hope you enjoyed the show. Watch the night sky you neverknow what you'll see.

ROB:

Okay, have fun.

BOB:Bye, everyone.

ROB:Bye.

we all know she's really messed things up / Is it me, or everything coming unstuck? / If, the aliens came herethey'd think we were crazy insane /They'd turn round their spaceships, head back in the direction they came /With a mark in their notebook to never come here again /Oh, if the aliens came, Oh, if the aliens came, Oh, ifthe aliens came. I walk into the shopping mall, a guy dressed as a doughnut's handing slices from America, toall the hungry kids / Some parents, who just want an easy life, can spend their wages on the very things theysaid they would forbid / Is it me, or is everything starting to end? / If the aliens came here, they'd think we'recrazy insane / Well, they turn round their spaceships, head back in the direction they came / With a mark intheir notebooks, to never come back here again/ If, the aliens came, Oh, if, the aliens came, Oh, if the alienscame. What are we turning into, am I by my self again? /Well, I keep getting telephones, by people tellingthings for which I will never have to pay / Back on television, some guy's asking me if I've had an accident, forwhich I'd like to make a claim / Is it me, or is everybody feeling ashamed? / If the aliens came here, they'dthink we were crazy insane / They'd turn round their spaceships, head back in the direction they came / With a
