Several of our titles boast fully interactive and regularly updated learning platforms. Here, teachers can assign tasks and monitor students’ progress, while students are encouraged to learn independently through blogs, videos and games. The Richmond Learning Platforms offer the best of formal and informal learning and have three main sections. The easy-to-use portals offer author interviews, downloadable sample units and fun learning activities for students. Students can participate by commenting on the blogs, and will enjoy belonging to an online community of English learners.

Teachers can also register students to the Virtual Learning Environments (VLE).

Pre-populated with activities, the VLEs allow teachers to assign tasks to their students and set timings and pass marks for exercises. Scores are recorded in a grade book, allowing teachers to track their students’ progress.

The Test Studios allow teachers to create their own interactive tests online or on paper. Teachers can create tests to revise by unit, a block of units or the whole book. It is easy to decide what to include in the tests from grammar and vocabulary and the four skills. It is also possible to choose whether to upload tests to a school VLE or LMS.

The Richmond Vodcasts are a highly original and enjoyable series of short films providing a lively starting point for classroom communication. Students are introduced to our entertaining presenters and follow them as they complete a set of amusing challenges around the UK. Each film corresponds to a level of The Big Picture and New Framework and can be used in conjunction with either coursebook.

What I really want to do is…

Have you considered…

There are a number of things you could do…

Listening

4 1.16 Kate’s going to do a summer job in Athens. She’s talking to Nick, who has lived in Greece for years. Listen. True (T) or false (F)?

1 Kate has lived abroad in three different countries.

2 Nick came to Athens before the Olympic Games.

3 Athens is really noisy at the moment.

4 Nick has arranged a coach tour of the city.

5 Kate is going to live on the island of Paros.

6 There are very few tickets available for the ferries.

TipTo react quickly to news or a suggestion, use (That) sounds + adjective.

He’s going to show us the sights.Sounds lovely.

Grammar

5 Look at the yellow texts in audioscript 1.16 on page 107. Match them to rules 1–4.

The future

1 Will can be used to describe a future fact or to make a prediction. It’s not usually used to describe future arrangements.

2 Use going to for predictions and future plans and arrangements.

3 Use the Present Continuous for future plans and arrangements, e.g. things you’d write in a diary.

4 Use the Present Simple for timetabled events and schedules.

6 Look back at What kind of traveller are you? on p. 14. What verb form is used for the questions? And for the answers? Why?

The Present Continuous for the future and going to are very similar. Both can be used to talk about future plans, especially when the plans have been made with other people.

Total:5–7 points It sounds like you’re a pretty adventurous traveller,

or maybe you’re just very relaxed. But it wouldn’t hurt to do a little more preparation before you go away. The best holiday for you would be backpacking round the world.

8–11 points You’re a pretty normal traveller. You make some plans but also like to take things as they come. Nobody wants to plan everything on holiday, do they? The best holiday for you is one where you book your hotels and ights before you leave, but do everything yourself online.

12–15 points You’re a very careful traveller and always try to know everything before going away. But you might be a little too cautious – perhaps you could be a bit more spontaneous on holidays? The best holiday for you is a coach tour where the itinerary is organized in advance.

1 You’re getting ready for a holiday abroad. What kind of clothes are you going to pack?

a I’ll pack special clothes for the holiday: some good shirts and a new hat. If I run out ofclothes while I’m away, I’ll just buy some T-shirts with the name of the place on them.

b I won’t change my look much. I’ll just wear the same clothes as I do at home.

c I want to t in with the locals so I’ll nd out what they wear and then pack similar clothes.

2 You’re going to a country whose language you don’t speak. What are you going to do?

a I’ll just learn a few words of the local language like ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ and take a phrase book too. I’m sure I’ll get by.

b I’ll just mime or speak English because everyone understands it.

c I’ll use all available online resources and try to learn as many words as I can before I go.

3 You want to travel all around the country when you’re there. What preparations are you going to make?

a I’ll gure out everything I want to do. Then, I’ll book all the tickets online before I go. I’m not going to hang around in railway stations waiting for trains!

b None. I’ll make all the decisions when I get there. I’ll just see what turns up .

c I’ll have a look in the guidebooks and ask my friends for advice. If I need to arrange anything in particular, I’ll do that before I go.

4 How do you decide what you’re going to see during the trip?

a I’ll make a decision after I check into the hotel.

b I’ll call up everyone I know for suggestions. I’ll also see if my friends know people in the country who can show me the places tourists never see.

c I’ll do the main touristy things, and visit all the most famous museums.

5 You’re going to a country with very different cuisine to yours. How are you going to decide what to eat?

a I’ll look at all the food websites to nd out the local delicacies and then I’ll book the most famous restaurants so that I can try them all.

b I’ll nd out the areas where the main restaurants are and then, when I eat out in the evenings, I’ll go there.

c I’ll see when I get there. If I can’t nd somewhere good to eat, I’ll just go to a fast food outlet or somewhere like that.

What kind of traveller are you?

Actually, I’ve never been abroad.

@@ will for spontaneous decisionsMaking decisions

A helping hand10

Start up 1 Work with a partner and discuss what is happening in each of the pictures.

2 List five decisions you made this week from the easiest to the hardest. Tell a partner the reasons for the order.

Reading 3 Discuss with a partner what you think the benefits of mentoring are.

4 Read the text. Are your ideas from 3 mentioned?

Mentors Over 70% of the 500 largest companies in the USA have a mentoring programme.

A mentor is a person with a lot of experience who helps someone with less experience for a period of time.

?

However, the old model of ‘your boss is your mentor’ is no longer the normal model, with people seeking help from a wider range of contacts. You don’t have to be that old or experienced to pass on knowledge or even very high up the hierarchy.Mentoring is becoming common in the business world, but is it worth the time and effort? A study by Gartner, an American research firm, found that:

• 25% of employees on a mentoring programme had a promotion, but only 5% of workers not taking part had a promotion

• mentors were promoted six times more often than those not in a mentoring programme

• mentees were promoted five times more often than those not in a mentoring programme.

Some people fear that sharing their experience with their younger colleagues will put their own jobs at risk. They want your job, don’t they? Well, they might want your job, but mentoring or not mentoring them isn’t going to change that.Making a difference to the lives of others can help make people happier. Some of the happiest people, no matter what their normal job is, are helping others through life’s difficulties.
