skills designed for students with offers to study
on the International Foundation Programme atCardiff University.

an excellent introduction to academic study and
university life.

Students who have offers for the International
Foundation Programme conditional on achievingan IELTS score of 5.5 (TOEFL 525 Paper-based/iBT 68) can attend our 8-week Pre-IFP course.

must have minimum attendance of 90%,successfully complete all assignments and tests
on the course and have a positive attitude to
learning.
Students holding unconditional offers

Over 120 years of teaching experience
Cardiff University has been successfullyeducating students since 1883. You can be
certain that we have learned a lot in that time.
Recently, 21 of our academic subject areas
were independently assessed as Excellent for
teaching. This spirit of excellence carries over
into all our departments, and our Englishlanguage teaching is no exception.
Entry assessment and regular monitoring
During the first week of any course, we use a
standard placement exam and course-specific
testing techniques to determine your English
language abilities in listening, reading, speaking
and writing. You will be assessed even if you
have an IELTS score or equivalent. This allowsus to place you in classes with students who
have similar needs, allowing you to maximise
your learning and ensuring you feel challenged
but not overwhelmed.
Professional teaching you can count on
Your motivation and our teaching expertise are
the keys to your success in learning English.
As one of the UKs leading universities, ourteaching methods are proven to work. Our
teachers hold specialist qualifications in
Teaching English as a Foreign or Second
Language and understand the language and
study requirements of the British higher
education system. Many have first-handexperience of living in a different country and
studying another language. But most important
of all, our teachers are committed to creating a
vibrant teaching and learning community.
Innovative teaching materials
Cardiff University English language courses
follow a core syllabus developed by our own
team of specialists, using recognised texts, coursebooks and source materials as well as
drawing on relevant and entertaining
supplementary materials current news
articles, magazines and periodicals, television
shows, videos and IT.
The syllabus varies according to which courseyou study so that we meet the different needs
of for example a student about to start apostgraduate degree programme at Cardiff
University or someone improving his or her
General English for career reasons.
Intensive language and cultural studies
To become fluent in another countrys language,
you must also be fluent in its culture. We
concentrate on developing essential language
skills (grammar, reading, writing, listening and
speaking) using task-based activities, currentevents and British themes such as literature,
history, culture, education and art whereappropriate. This means that you learn to use
and speak English in everyday real-life
situations whether at University, in theworkplace, with friends, in shops, in restaurants
or at home.
Teaching and learning methods
The course employs a variety of teaching
methods, all chosen to deliver the tuition you
need in the best possible way.
Lectures
Lectures are classes given to large groups of
students. Lectures allow you to gain a
comprehensive base of knowledge. Lecturers
make use of a range of resources and facilities
to provide the information you need. During
lectures, you will be given written material(handouts), information about exams and
essays, and multi-media presentations.
You may even find that you are invited to give
your own presentation.
Seminars
These are smaller discussion groups of three toten students led by tutors. This is an ideal time
to discuss any questions after lectures and an
opportunity to fully understand the subjects you
are studying.
Tutorials
You can arrange to meet any tutor to discuss
any aspect of the course. For example, if thereis something you did not understand in a
lecture or seminar, or if you want to discuss the
progress of your project or essay or any other
topic you want to talk about.
All students are encouraged to speak
individually to their tutors if they have anyquestions or problems; your tutor will always be
pleased to see you and happy to help.
Official recognition
Once your English language course is finished,
you will receive an official Cardiff University
Attendance Certificate. It is proof of your time
with us and makes an excellent addition to yourCV - demonstrating to future employers your
new language abilities as well as your initiative
and independence.
