LETTER BY RICHARD VAUGHAN

Dear friends:

It is with particular pleasure that I hereby present Vaughan Systems’ immersion programs. They represent the only option I would choose if I really needed, personally, to master French, German, or any language that was very important for my career. Except for beginners, who need a teacher to lay down the first foundations of the language, the immersion option is the only way for those who really do not want to waste any time in their search for a definitive solution.

Conventional English classes, even with the best teacher in the world, often yield an uncertain return on the student’s investment. Travel is a problematic part of the equation, daily responsibilities distract the student, difficulties attending class and poor punctuality take their toll, and the time between classes dilutes the overall effect of each session. At best, these classes will be 85% effective.

The effectiveness of an immersion program, in contrast, approaches 100%.The students are completely removed from their everyday lives and worries. They are isolated from everything except English. Every hour of class is taken full advantage of and the student is 100% focused on the language from the moment they sit down for breakfast until they finish their last beers at night. For many the change is so positive that a single immersion weekend can surpass what is achieved in two years of conventional classes.

This is why I can say that it is a real pleasure to present these immersion programs.

One-Week Residential: The student spends every waking minute of the five-day program with a teacher. As well as demanding one-to-one classes, the student and teacher spend all their downtime together, including all the meals of the day and breaks during which they can engage in more relaxed conversation. The 72 hours of classes and social time equates to 300 hours of conventional group classes. This program has been specifically designed for students who need to consolidate their mastery of the most essential aspects of the English language.

Weekend Residential: The course design is the same, but the weekend schedule is intended for those who, due to scheduling conflicts, cannot attend during the work week. Many executives attend a weekend program every two months and, in a year and a half or less, observe a radical improvement in their English.

VaughanTown: Teachers are banned at this program. This is because VaughanTown is different. In only six days, patricipants drastically improve their comprehension of English, as well as gaining real confidence when speaking the language. To this end, each year we recruit over 1,000 English-speaking volunteers who, in groups of 15 each week, lend us their voices and their energy, 13 hours a day, so that our participants can make leaps and bounds in their listening skills and overcome their fear of speaking English. This is the only educational approach that I personally recommend for 98% of Spanish adults at the intermediate level or higher. Despite having personally created and designed VaughanTown 17 years ago, I am still amazed at the results it produces. Every week I see miracles; inspirational improvements in people’s communicative abilities, transformations that are more the result of a psychological shift than a technical improvement in terms of

grammatical mastery or vocabulary. In the end, it’s actually very simple: Vaughan Town improves your comprehension of English while making you an overall more confident person. For both the patricipants and volunteers, VaughanTown can be a truly life-changing experience.

Over the years, we have got to know our students very well. They have conveyed to us the need to offer shorter immersion programmes, so that those who don’t have much time can still experience the best of the Residential and VaughanTown programs. This is why we have created new programs meeting these requirements: FiftyFifty, a hybrid of a Residential and VaughanTown. And DayTown; a one-day VaughanTown format, to accommodate those who do not have time for more extensive programs.

Most of our students, curiously, ask us for conventional classes, and shy away from immersion options. This is a big mistake. The approach taken in residential programs is, by far, the most effective and beneficial, and, in terms of providing a definitive solution, the most economical of all.

1. The minimum numbers of students for the immersion programs shall be:

• VaughanTown: A minimum of 5 and a maximum of 24 participants• Residentials: A minimum of 1 and a maximum of 6 participants• DayTown: A minimum of 5 and a maximum of 30 participants• FiftyFifty: A minimum of 10 and a maximum of 18 participants

2. In the event that VAUGHAN ceases to render the educational service contracted, or the contract is terminated for any reason attributable to the CLIENT, VAUGHAN shall proceed to refund the amount paid by the CLIENT corresponding to the period during which the services shall not be rendered.

3. THE CLIENT accepts and agrees to comply with the behavior and academic discipline rules provided him, and declares that he does recognize and accept the consequences set forth in this document with regards to cases of non-compliance, which can even entail cancellation of the right to attend the program, without any consequent right to financial compensation.

4. In the event that, following his registration, the CLIENT wishes to change program dates, he must so request, in writing, at least 15 working days prior to the start of the program.

5. If a CLIENT decides to cancel his participation in the program contracted, he is to so notify VAUGHAN by return-receipt letter. For all purposes, the date on which this letter is received shall be used to calculate the cancellation periods and refunds appearing below:

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS

For VaughanTown, Residentials and FiftyFifty:

• Cancellations 30 days or more prior to the start date: VAUGHAN will refund 100% of the amount paid prior to cancellation

• Cancellations from 29 to 20 days before the course start date: VAUGHAN will refund 50% of the amount paid prior to cancellation

• Cancellations from 19 to 10 days before the course start date: VAUGHAN will refund 25% of the amount paid prior to cancellation

• Cancellations 9 days or less before the course start date: VAUGHAN will not offer any refund

DayTown:

• Cancellations 30 days or more prior to the start date: VAUGHAN will refund 100% of the amount paid prior to cancellation

• Cancellations between 15 and 19 days before the course start date: VAUGHAN will refund 50% of the amount paid prior to the cancellation

• Cancellations 9 days or less before the course start date: VAUGHAN will not offer any refund

6. In all those cases providing for reimbursement amounts, whether total or partial, VAUGHAN shall deduct from the sum refunded the sum of €60 as compensation for administrative expenses incurred.

7. The CLIENT’s absence from the program does not entitle him to a refund. As a result, the participant is not entitled to be reimbursed for the price he has paid once the program has begun if he does not complete it of his own volition.
