Bladen County Course Description:Students will analyze World literature as it reflects social perspective and historical significance by continuing to use language for expressive, expository, argumentative and literary purposes. This course emphasizes critical analysis of texts through reading, writing, research, speaking, listening, and using media.

Teacher Expectations:This course is set up to follow the Essential Standards for English I. We will cover the goals and competencies set forth by the state. Students will complete individual and group projects during the course. Some of these projects are to be completed outside of regular class time and will require time and effort from the student. Students will keep a notebook for this course from which they will complete a portfolio at the semesters end. Tests may include fill in the blank, short answer, matching and multiple-choice questions, as well as constructed response questions. Test material will be reviewed and, in most cases, a review guide will be provided for students to assist them in studying. The final exam in this course will be a comprehensive exam created by the state and will count as one-fifth of the semester grade.

Grading Policy:Nine week grading period:Tests- 40%Quizzes-20%Class work/Participation & Homework - 25% Projects- 15% (unless otherwise stated) *Final grade for the semester: (as set forth by Bladen County Schools)1st nine weeks-40%2nd nine weeks-40%Final Exam-20%

Honor Code:Students will abide by the honor code statement I have neither given nor received help on this assignment for all assignments unless specifically exempted by the instructor. Violations of the honor code pledge will result in a zero for the assignment, a disciplinary referral to the office for action consistent with the school system policy on cheating, and potential loss of status in honor societies. Examples of violations of this policy include (but are not limited to) giving or receiving help on any in-class or take-home test, essay, or quiz, plagiarism of material on take-home essays, and discussion of any quiz, test, or essay questions with students who have not yet completed that assignment. Possession of a personal electronic device during a test or quiz is an automatic zero for that item. No excuses.

Absences and Late Work:Per county policy, high school students may not miss more than 7 class days (excused absences STILL COUNT as an absence) in a class per semester. A student will have three days to turn in the missed work upon return to class to receive full credit. After three days points will be deducted. Please refer to the student handbook or the Bladen County Schools website for further explanation of excused vs. unexcused absences. *Students who are participating in a school sanctioned event which causes them to be absent from class are not counted absent but are still expected to make up any missed work within the three day period.

Notebook requirements:The first pages of the notebook should be a copy of the course syllabus signed by the student and the parent/guardian. Please put the paper copies into sheet protectors. Following the contract, the notebook should flow in sequential order. The notebook will become a comprehensive study tool for the course and should be valued as such. Students are required to bring their notebooks to class EACH DAY. Should a notebook get lost during the course of the semester the student is responsible for recreating the notes and vocabulary so that the cumulative value of the notebook is preserved. Having your notebook complete and up to date each day will help assure the best results on tests in this class!
