English for Chemistry 1 Handout 2 General Strategies for the TOEIC 1. Check the test paper - Do you have all the pages?

Are the pages printed correctly? Are they in the correct order?

2. Understand the question types - What types of question are asked in each section?

3. Use time effectively - Look at the pictures before listening Read the questions before listening Use the time for the section/part explanation Use the time after answering a question

4. Get a rhythm - Read – Listen – Answer – Read (Don’t worry about difficult questions – GUESS!)

5. Guess effectively - Guess only from possible answers If ALL answers are possible, use a guessing letter

6. Concentrate - Concentrate during the entire test (The first words/sentences are important) (Every question is important)

7. Get used to natural English - TOEIC English is natural spoken/written English TOEIC English is NOT textbook English e.g. He is going to … - He’s gonna … e.g. I am a … - I’m a … e.g. Q. What’s his name? A. I’ve forgotten. e.g. Q. Is she your sister? A. I only have 2 brothers.

9. Be careful of TRAPS - Type1: Same / Similar words – Different meaning e.g. He wants to eat meat. Type 2: Same / Similar words – Wrong response e.g. He wants to meet at 5:00 e.g. He wants to study at 5:30 Type 3: Different words – Same meaning e.g. His wants to see her at 6:00
