Unit 5 Network Network A group of interconnected computers and peripherals that is capable of sharing software and hardware resources between many users. The internet is a global network of networes. There are many types of computer network including LAN, WAN, CAN, MAN and HAN.

LAN - Stands for "Local Area Network". LAN is a computer network limited to a small area.

WAN – Stands for “wide-area network”. WAN is similar to a LAN, but it's a lot bigger. WANs are not limited to a single location.

CAN – Stands for “campus-area network”. CAN is a computer network that links the buildings and consists of two or more LANs within the limited geographical area.

MAN – Stands for “Metropolitan Area Network”. MAN is a series of LANs that are interconnected through various means in a metropolitan area such as a city and its suburbs.

HAN – Stands for “home-area network”. A HAN is a network contained within a user's home.

Unit 5 Network Internet System connecting computers around the world using a common Software Protocol for transmitting and receiving data. This protocol is known as TCP/IP, which stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. There are a variety of ways to access the Internet. Most online services offer access to some Internet services. It is also possible to gain access through a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP)

Unit 5 Network Internet The Internet is not synonymous with World Wide Web. It connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet. The World Wide Web, or simply Web, is a way of accessing information over the medium of the Internet. It is an information-sharing model that is built on top of the Internet.
