+ 1 persuasive Essay
Upper grades
11th grade – Analytical writing for SAT/ACT essays
12th grade – Reflective, analytical, expository, and persuasive.
What STAAR is looking at
Organization (thesis statement, ideas are logical and focused)
Development of ideas (response is original rather than formulaic. Can the student explain one detail completely, rather than touch on multiple topics)
Use of language/conventions (grammar, word choice. Words chosen are clear and specific.)
English I - Expository
9th graders will complete an expository writing assignment for their English 1 STAAR test.
Expository writing explains your thinking in a clear complete way. Expository = Explains
Students must include a thesis statement in their essay (what the paper is about)
Student reasons must be well developed.
English II - Persuasion
Students will learn about Aristotle and his three ways of persuasion
Logos = logic Pathos = emotional Ethos = ethics
To create effective and meaningful reasons in their writing. Thesis statements and reasons will also be well developed.
English III - Analytical
English III students will be focusing on analytical essays that focus on the structure and word choice the author uses in a story or passage either by itself or in comparison with another story. Students will also be completing a variety of ACT/SAT specific writing prompts throughout the year.
English IV – Reflective, Analytical
English IV students will work on reflective essays, analytical for the SAT/ACT, as well as expository and persuasive throughout the year in preparation for their freshman year of college.
Action Plan for Spring Semester
Writing across all core subjects At least 1 major essay (including revise
and edit) per six weeks in English
Multiple short answer/open ended response questions weekly.
Action plan for Spring Semester
Stressing the point of using relevant textual evidence, prewriting graphic organizers, and well thought out thesis statements.
Students will be introduced new vocabulary words (Kilgo verbs) daily and use frayer model for application.
