INTRODUCTION
1
What better cause to celebrate the new season than Arts CouncilEngland's recent announcement that The English Concert is among itsnew National Portfolio of funded organisations. In the contextof substantial cuts, this is a tremendous vote of confidence. Our grant will be specifically for work outside London from2012. I look forward to announcing more details later inthe season.
After our recent recording 'Three Baroque Tenors'with Ian Bostridge, it is wonderful to open the seasonwith him at Wigmore Hall. Indeed, Ian is a featuredartist at the Wigmore over the coming months, andour 2012 concerts with him include distinguishedguests Angelika Kirchschlager and the AuroraOrchestra in repertoire not always Baroque!
Another recent recording success for The EnglishConcert has been our first CD with Elizabeth Watts –Bach Cantatas and Arias. We return with her and LaurenceCummings to Wigmore Hall in November to perform lesswell-known but nonetheless superb vocal works byAlessandro Scarlatti.
After a sell-out US tour last year with Alice Coote, who sings with us at Wigmore Hall in 2012, we travel to the States this autumn with
countertenor Andreas Scholl, focussing on Purcell’s semi-operas, FairyQueen and King Arthur. Tours to Germany, Holland and Belgium will
mark the welcome return of Vesselina Kasarova, Mark Padmore, and Lucy Crowe, whose debut recital CD with us, Il caroSassone, will be released later this year.
The Choir of The English Concert is again moving to theforefront of our activities, first with Schütz's Christmas
Story as part of this year's St John's, Smith SquareChristmas Festival, and next year in the closing
concert of the Leipzig Bachfest, with Bach'smonumental Mass in B minor.
Recent residencies at London museumsinclude the V&A in 2009 for theirInternational Baroque exhibition, and our firstMaster Class at the Foundling Museum in2010. Next year we return to this gem of a
museum, with its strong Handel associations, to presentconcerts during their Vauxhall Pleasure Gardensexhibition and to give a second Master Class.
All in all, a great deal of wonderful music and music-makingto look forward to. I hope very much to welcome you during the
coming months.Ph

Heinrich Schütz was the leading German composer of the 17th Centuryand the first of truly international renown. Towards the end of his longlife he devoted himself entirely to composing church music, of whichThe Christmas Story is his masterpiece. The narration, told by a tenorevangelist, is accompanied to great dramatic effect and interspersedPriests by trombones, and the irritable Herod by a pair of cornetti. Theheavenly choir is represented by a 6-part chorus, bringing thiswonderful work to a joyful conclusion.

THE FOUNDLINGMUSEUMVAUXHALL PLEASURE GARDENS“The delight of all persons of reputation and taste”
In 1732 the Spring Gardens in Vauxhall, the oldest of the London pleasure
gardens, were leased to one Jonathan Tyers, who opened them for public
entertainment every evening during the summer months. Chief among
the attractions were the orchestral concerts which took place – the
players wearing cocked hats – in an elegant raised bandstand among the
trees or, in bad weather, in a rotunda. The very best players and singers of
the time were engaged, and resident composers included Thomas Arne
and James Hook, though many others also produced works, particularly
songs, for the teeming Vauxhall public.
The English Concert presents a series of concerts as part of the
Foundling Museum’s summer exhibition devoted to Vauxhall Gardens,
including music from the Garden’s 18th-Century heyday. The popular
style of much of the music reflects the unique informality and social
diversity of the Garden’s clientele. This was a place where anyone who
could afford the entrance price of one shilling could feel, for an evening
at least, on an equal footing with royal Dukes and Duchesses, wealthy
City merchants, and Georgian London’s burgeoning middle class,
hungry for new social pleasures.
“...the pleasures of Vauxhall, which Ino sooner entered than I wasdazzled and confounded with thevariety of beauties that rushed all atonce upon my eye. Imagine toyourself a spacious garden, laid outin delightful walks, bounded withhigh hedges and trees, and pavedwith gravel; part exhibiting awonderful assemblage of the mostpicturesque and striking objects, pavilions, lodges, groves, grottos, lawns, temples, and cascades;porticoes, colonnades, and rotundas;adorned with pillars, statues, andpaintings; the whole illuminatedwith an infinite number of lamps, disposed in different figures of suns, stars and constellations: the placecrowded with the gayest company, ranging through those blissfulshades, or supping in different lodgeson cold collations, enlivened withmirth, freedom and good humour, and animated by an excellent bandof music.”

RECORDINGS
19
In the 1970s The English Concert was among world leaders in performingBaroque and Classical music on historically authentic instruments, and itsinternational reputation has been built first and foremost on the rangeand quality of its discography. Early recordings of canonic works such asBach's Brandenburg Concertos, Mozart's symphonies, Vivaldi's concertos, and Handel's Messiah remain best-selling benchmarks of interpretativeauthority and technical excellence, while more recent recordings haveattracted no less critical acclaim. As steals the morn, a recording of Handelarias and scenes with Mark Padmore, won a 2008 BBC Magazine award,
and the recent recording of Bach Cantatas & Arias with Harry Bicket andElizabeth Watts was Editor's Choice in Gramophone Magazine. At a timewhen the recording of classical music has become commerciallychallenged, The English Concert continues to make regular andsuperlative recordings. In November 2011 Lucy Crowe will release herdebut recital CD, Il caro Sassone, with The English Concert.
