MY THOUGHTS

By the time you read this we will have gone to the Lane Museum and had a great picnic with

Ty and Andi. We have attained our objective of having at least one driving event each month.

So far each event has been well attended and well planned.

Recently our meetings have lacked real substance other than good fellowship and food.

Looking at the July agenda there are several items that can affect the future of the EAS.

The issue was raised at the last meeting whether we should “unite” the regional clubs under

one umbrella group. Interesting! EAS, Blount and Plateau are all healthy and doing good

things. Yes, we tend to be doing them together. What position should we take. That is up to

each of the EAS members.

A small conversation at the picnic was wondering if the time has come to start holding

meetings without dinner. Fewer places are welcoming groups our size and some people are

concerned about the cost.

Talking about food, it was reported that our traditional dinner venue for the progressive dinner

was raising the rental charge to a point where some people feel that we need to find another

place to meet. What do you want to do? Is there another approach would be open to

discussion.

Wow, now we have a meeting agenda!

We have one new member I read on Facebook. It is apparent that there are sports car people

in the area who do not belong to any of our clubs. Rather than invite them to a meeting how

about inviting them on one of our events. Participating in one of our driving events will show

the fun and fellowship that highlights EAS.

See you at the meeting? Your input is important.

JUNE MEETING AND PICNIC

Twenty-two people made the trek to scenic Kingston for our June meeting at the Nemeths. A

departure from our normal meeting venues for a picnic and meeting...more picnic but it was

fun and our hosts added great weather as well. Thank to Andi and Ty for putting this together

and providing great food and a fun atmosphere.

TOUR OF THE LANE MUSEUM

This was not actually an EAS event but you would not have known it by the

attendance. We joined with the Smoky Mountain Jaguar club for a tour of the museum

and the added attraction of the “Basement”. Over 100 cars of all strange shapes and

sizes from all over the world. This has to be one of the most unusual (in a good way)

auto collections anywhere.

The EAS, Blount and Plateau club members – 9 cars and 15 people – were led by John

and Barbara Rigby in their nice and fast Jaguar. Driving TN route 70 to Lebanon and

then making a high speed dash to Nashville. The route 70 drive was nice. Little traffic.

However, it seemed a little challenging for the group to stay in contact. At one point,

the lead group was in Smithville waiting for the rest to drive up and that group was still

in Sparta wondering where the lead group was! Interesting! Of course I-40 into

Nashville was more like the start of a Formula 1 race --- for 40 miles. Close order

driving at 80 mph was, to say, different from the prior 3 ½ hours on 70. We all got there

– well except for Alan Rigby whose Citroen got bitten by a Lucas lie bug. The electrics

to engine quit. Turns out that the securing ring holding the distributor in place

loosened up allowing the distributor to move thus disabling the car. Unfortunately,

Alan and Rachel had a tow truck ride home.

While the upstairs at the museum is interesting as all the cars displayed are show

quality, the basement, which houses another 100 or more cars, is everything from barn

finds to “one of a kinds” undergoing restoration. Our guide was very knowledgeable

about the collection and very interesting and entertaining.

An extra, at least to this writer, was discovering another totally unrelated museum in

the same building. When we first arrived I noticed 3 Datsuns sitting at the back of the

lot. Having owned 3 Datsuns and raced 2 of them I was more than a bit interested to

meet the members of what I thought was the local Datsun/Nissan club. Turns out that

the museum also houses the Nissan Corporate car collection including many

significant racing cars. The men who were there were Nissan engineers who just

happen to maintain the corporate collection. I was made aware that drooling on the

cars was in bad form.

A most interesting and enjoyable tour to say the least.

Minutes from June 4, 2017 meeting

President John called the meeting to order. We had 26 in attendance (23 members & 3 guests). Thanks to Ty & Andi Nemeth for hosting. Treasurer’s Report: Don reported that we have about the same in the Flower Fund as last month and approximately $5 less in the checking account. We are still at 30 paid memberships for 2017. Old Business: Meetings for the rest of 2017 - we may need to find another place to meet in September. We were going to the Chop House but they are upping their minimum sales requirement to avoid a room charge. The Rigbys are trying to negotiate this. Still need a place to meet in October. New Business: Mike McCall brought up a suggestion/proposal for future consideration and discussion – should we, along with the other area British Car Clubs, think about becoming one club such as “East Tennessee British Car Club”? President John asked everyone to think about this and we will begin a discussion next month. Activity Reports: 3rd Annual European Car Show in Morristown – several of our members went (Rigbys, Gary Moss, Zerrips) and they reported that about 50 cars were there.
