English 3: Myths and Realities
English 3 is the third required step in the English classes at Harper Creek High School. The class
focuses on further developing your critical reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills and will
include some ACT/MME Preparation.
In this class you will read many well known British literature classics. The five texts that will be read
include: Beowulf, Hamlet, Frankenstein, and Lord of the Flies. Along with reading these focus texts,
the class will also encounter mentor texts that help to develop reading and writing skills. Mentor
texts can be anything from a news article on a proposal in an upcoming election to lyrics from a
Mumford and Sons song. Be prepared to do some heavy annotating and dissecting.
Tools and Required Materials
In order to survive this class you must come prepared for battle every day. The tools you will needare
Composition Notebook Folder Silent Reading Book Writing Utensil Highlighter Course Text
These tools need to be brought with you to class every day. Materials can be borrowed from Mrs.
Hilarides but it is usually in exchange of something of value to you. Always be prepared.
Steps to Survive Day to Day
1. Be prepared when class begins When the bell rings for battle to begin, you need to be inyour seat ready to do the opening activity for class. Use the time before the bell rings to get
everything prepared. This could include, but is not limited to, sharpening pencils, going to the
restroom, and turning in and collecting assignments. When that bell rings, you better be
ready to go.2. Always have your SSR book Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we will do sustained
silent reading to open class. SSR books can be any book of interest to you. You can read
anything from the Zombie Survival Guide to Pride and Prejudice. The choice is yours. Just
remember that whatever you read should always be approved by a parent or guardian.
Books can be borrowed from Mrs. Hilarides. In fact, if you really want to make her happy, ask
her for a book recommendation. She loves telling you what to read.

3. Complete your assignments Whether you are supposed to complete an assignment athome or in class, they are given to you as a way to train. If you want to pass and survive class,
just do the assignments.
4. Respect your fellow classmates, teacher, and classroom If you want to stay in class everyday and learn the skills required to survive, you must respect everyone and everything
around you. There will obviously be some butting of heads when you are here, but just
remember that you should always be respectful to everyone in class. Were all trying to
survive together.
Grading
Earning Every Point is Your Goal
In this class all assignments and activities are on a point system. This means that each assignment is
given a point value and those points are all added together. Smaller assignments will be given
smaller point values and major assignments will be given bigger point values. The goal is to earn as
many points as possible.
Need more training to earn those points? Mrs. Hilarides will stay after school most days to help you
with any assignment or skill that is taught in class. The main day that she is after school is
Wednesday. If you would like to stay after any other day, please give her some advanced notice so
she can plan on being here for you.
Extra Credit Extra credit is just that extra. That means that it is an additional assignment that will
be given only if you have already turned in all other assignments. Extra credit is given as an extensionof an activity that is happening in class. It will be difficult but worth it. It only happens a few times a
semester so be on the lookout for it.
Homework
Necessary Practice for Battle
Homework assignments that are given are necessary practice for you to survive class and be
prepared for battle in class and in the future. Homework will not be given every day but it willhappen. Make sure you do it and you do it on time.
Late work Any assignment turned in after the day it is due needs to be turned in to the late work
bin on Mrs. Hilarides desk and marked with Late on the top. Late work will only receive half credit.
Late work will only be taken until the end of the unit it is from. Once that unit ends, the assignment
can no longer be turned in. Remember that every point in this class counts, so try to get all your work
in on time.

Absent work If you are absent, make sure to look to the agenda on the board for what you missed.
Any handouts that were given during class the day you missed will be in your folder. Make sure you
get any notes you missed from a peer. Any assignment you missed must be turned in to the
absent/late work bin on Mrs. Hilardes desk with Absent written at the top within five days of the
absence in order to receive full credit. If you every need help getting caught back up, plan to stay
after with Mrs. Hilarides.
Breaking the Rules
The rules are put into place for a reason. The rules keep our building and classroom a safe and
respectful environment to learn in. If the rules are broken, there are repercussions. If you are tardy
for class times, are disrespectful to a peer, teacher, or school property, or are failing to turn in
assignments, you may be given a detention. Other than lunch detentions for tardies, detention will
be served after school in Mrs. Hilarides room. If you are given a detention, make sure to bring work
with you or else Mrs. Hilarides will provide you with something not so fun to do.
Plagiarism This rule is one that Mrs. Hilarides hates. She HATES when people plagiarize. She knows
what is your work and what isnt and its very easy to find where you got it if it isnt yours. To make
things easy, only turn in something you have written yourself. If you do plagiarize, you will be written
up and sent to Ms. Crawford for further discipline. The assignment will also be given a zero. JUST
DONT DO IT!
Technology Tools
How to use technology and live to tell the tale
It is a rule of Harper Creek High School that cell phones and Ipods/MP3 players are not allowed inside
the classroom. If your cell phone is seen or heard, it will be taken from you and given to Ms.
Crawford. If you want to keep your technology, dont be seen with it in class.
Technology can also be helpful. Here are a couple of tech tools that will help you survive in class:
Remind 101 Remind 101 is a way for me to send you text messages (or emails if you donthave a cell phone) without either of us exchanging numbers. Simply text @hilarides1 (for
first block students) or @hilarides5 (for fifth block students) to (660)329-9582. This will sign
you up to receive text alerts that will notify you of upcoming events in class like quizzes,
homework, etc. Before you sign up, please talk to your parent or guardian. Because the
messages are sent through text message, normal text message rates will apply. Only sign up
once your parent has approved it and is aware of the charges.

Class Website Mrs. Hilarides has created a website for English 3,hilaridesenglish3.weebly.com, where she will post handouts and resources given during class.
If you ever lose a handout or leave it at school when you need it at home, this is a great place
to find it. Also, additional tools for outside of school practice will be located here. Make sure
you check this website often.
The Hallway
How to leave and come back alive
The passing time between classes is when you should take care of business like gathering materials,
going to the office, and using the restroom. I am human though and understand that sometimes
emergencies happen. In the case that you need to leave the room, you must wait until a convenient
time to ask Mrs. Hilarides, take the hallway pass, and you must return quickly. Abuse of hallway
passes will result in the termination of your hallway privileges.
Film Studies
An additional resource that we will utilize in English 3 to understand themes and develop our analysis
skills is films. In this class we will watch clips and full films to further develop our understanding of
texts. Below is a list of films that may be utilized throughout the semester. If you or your
parent/guardian has an issue with watching any of these films, they may indicate so on the following
page.
Films that may be viewed:
Hamlet (1990) - PG Hamlet (2000) R A Knights Tale PG13 The Lion King G Beowulf PG13 Frankenstein R Young Frankenstein PG Lord of the Flies R
